2010 Fan Art Calendar: MARCH
So I had so many ideas for this years calendar unfortunately none of them coopperated with me, until I was reading my elfquest anthologies and came across the story of Rahnee again though the story has stuck with me since I first read the books and it struck me that this scene would be great for this theme, though my mom and sisters still insist that the deer is only sleeping, it must be the lack of blood or something.

Unfortunately, I don't know the story of Rahnee except in the most general sense.
But what strikes me about this piece is that not only does Rahnee have a fierce expression, but EVERYTHING else is also adding to that fierce, tense feeling. The jaggy lines on her torn clothes, the tree roots radiating out crazily and the way you textured them, the furious markings of the grass - it reminds me a little of Van Gogh's obsessive mark-making. His drawings have an intensity that is similar to what you've achieved here. |

I agree with Windrider! The dulled-down colors add so much to the atmosphere and the detailed bark and grass are absolutely wicked! Also, I love Rahnee! Heehee.

What I particularly like about this is how Rahnee just *glows* in the middle -- a very deft coloring decision, but it's also suggestive of the way her fierceness is radiating out of her. I look at this and I almost get the sense that while she's conquered the prey, she still isn't satisfied, it hasn't slaked whatever is driving her.

Beautiful job with the texture on the trees and grass. I love how her pose is echoing Timmorn as well.

I love the pose and the fact that Rahnee stands out so much in this illo. I think the gnarled tree and her tense pose add to the feeling of the image. I love it!
As for the deer, tell your family (I've got critics in my family, too) that maybe Rahnee just bashed its skull so that all the blood and gore are still contained in the cranium rather than spilled out. The blood may leak out later through the eyes and nose. Or maybe she broke its neck, or in the attempt to flee it broke its own neck (which would explain why she is still so enraged - she didn't make the kill!). |
