Flower girl - two decades later

This is the oldest piece of mine that I was able to find in my folders.  I'm not sure what her expression was supposed to be, but she looks rather horrified by the flower in the original. Or stoned...? Or maybe someone has just sent something tragic to her.

And what the heck was with the butt-cloth?  ???

In any case, the revamp sorta went beyond the bounds of the original, but sometimes a picture just has a mind of it's own, so I didn't try to restrain it once it wandered off the path.

Oh, and I know I left out the birds.  :'(

It's interesting to see these two drawings and the huge progress between both. I did'nt know you 1989 but I've seen your drawings from around 2000 and it is amazing how your drawing ability grew.

I love the whole new one. Does she has a name? Probably not. Is there any possibility to get it in a higher resolution? Just want to print it :)

:o  :D My first two emotions for this pic. I love that you have also chosen a really old pic. Are children usually using color pencils? Maybe they are just easy to handle. The old pic is too great. Got to love the expression. Maybe she's just surprised to find a rare flower? But at least she has some expression and does not grin meaninglessly into the camera. But I think the basic outfit design is pretty cool!
And what to say about the new version? It's just too gorgeous! That cool dark wood backdrop just draws me in! I love how her colors reflect the mood around her. Outfit is still great! If you want some criticism, I would also like to ask you to post a bigger version to oggle better!
I still love this challenge!   ;D

Thanks for the lovely compliments! :D

Link to full size version <--- there :) It's not as high-res as some stuff I've done, but it does let you seen some of the details better.

Not that I remember. :)  I drew a lot of unnamed lady elves back in the beginning.

I definitely did! I think you are right...it's because they are easy to handle, and because they are readily available (and better for this sort of thing than crayons!).

Oooh, thank you so much for the bigger version! I guess I still see close to no critique points... Mmmaybe more reflections of the stone and water plants on the water? I'm not sure how detailed you meant the background to be, as it seems to me that some parts are more detailed and some are out of focus and basically fade out (which I really like), so this might be purely intentional. On the other hand I noticed even more things that I love: bits of greenery sticking to her feet, those lovely shining lips ...

Oh wow.  Wow.  Color me crazy impressed.  I love the way one leg is crooked over the other in the new version; exactly the sort of natural thing you'd do if you were belly-down on a rock ;)  And the greenery is just amazing!  Honestly, it almost reminds me of the bayous back home in Louisiana, with the Spanish moss-like stuff draping off the trees in the background (no boulders in Louisiana though ;) ) And of course, the improvement is jaw-dropping, and I too applaud Baby Foxeye for not falling into the face-front portrait mode of youth (a trap I pretty much lived in).  Signs of greatness to come!

now that joyrider mentioned it, its true! usually in pictures young people tend to draw everyone looking at forward, it's very rare to see this kind of drawing where the character is looking elsewhere... that truly is a sign...

So awesome to see this huge gap between the two pictures. But it's okay to take the new picture further, 'cause it was about showing how you'd do it differently now, right? You give everything a background and sparkling colors nowadays, you had to show that in this picture too. And I love it, especially the way there seems to be a soft lightbeam going from the upper left corner to the lower right. Magic. :]

This is actually one of the sets of pieces, (as well as this whole challenge section) that has recently inspired me to work on my art skills again. The contrast is amazing, especially because I can "see" the newer picture in the older one.

I guess the birds got up and flew away in the intervening years between these. ;)

Wow, looks like it was drawn by two different people, just about. And do I miss the birds from the original? Not a wit. I didn't even notice. And going beyond the bounds of the original is kinda the point, methinks. Shows growth of how you approach drawing, and what skills you've learned over time. It's evolution!
