2010 Fan Art Calendar:  FEBRUARY

Talking about forgotten characters... I don't think I've seen fanart of the humans before!

So Nonna (and Adar) came to mind. They've meant so much for the quest and it was easy to fit them in the theme. When Cutter visited Nonna again in the village of Olbar it seemed to me that everything that was surrounding her there made her happy, so I tried to fit everything in

No, you don't really see a lot of illos dedicated to the humans of EQ. Considering, however, it makes sense that way. You've done an excellent job rendering Nonna and Adar, and the scene is truly engaging. I also think you did a magnificent job with the colors - very earthy and yet soft and realistic for being inside a tent with a single light source "off screen." Terrific work!

Hurrah!  This one might edge out "Papa Ekuar" for my favorite afke piece!  Talk about a true finding of one's place, especially for Nonna: after leaving the Hoan g'Tay Sho and then getting kicked out of Adar's tribe and living by themselves...to have a home and a family and a position within the tribe... I think you've captured that happiness perfectly!

LOVE THIS!  You do a bang-up job at controlling the eye of the viewer, and the warm colors make me so happy. The perfect thing to glance over at during one of the most blah times of the year, when we want that warmth of family and home to keep the cold at bay. (Well, unless you are in the southern hemisphere. Hmm, I wonder if they have reversed calendars down there?)

Afke, I LOVE that you always come up with something unexpected for your calendar entries.  You never pick the obvious for any theme, but instead try to push the envelope - as I was always taught to do for art school assignments.  Because of you we have a richer collection of characters in each year's calendar.

As you know, I am also a sucker for hand drawn and colored art.  This entry just gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

This was without question the biggest surprise of this calendar! One can always trust you to come up with something surprising. The warmth of this piece is so touching. Love it!!

You're right -- this pair is too-overlooked, and what you've chosen for them here is the perfect embodiment of this calendar's theme. It was so satisfying to see them again in SABM and to find how they'd prospered.  I love the way this shows the fullness of their lives, and their happiness.

This is just too cute for words! And I love that you chose some humans. It's such a beautiful, warm picture.

Thank you all!
I like how you mentioned the fullness, Holly, 'cause I figured it was so many things that made it home, I wanted it all in. I was worried the picture might seem too crowded, so I made everything behind Nonna and Nima (at least I think that name belongs with her, seems to be the most like a girl's name of the three) darker and it worked.
I quite like how all the colors turned out, but I've also put most work in this piece so I really tried my very best. And I must say it's more difficult to make the human characters in Elfquest look like themselves than it is for the elves! Especially in your own style. I'm glad everyone likes it.
