Afke! Aww, my beloved Zhantee! Aww, I didn't expect to see him. So, so happy! Just look at those desert colors! The sunset! And all that is done traditionally?
Perfect Zhantee for me... he's there, never in the foreground, but a steady pillar, always there for support. I like this little guy, I really do. Thanks for this, afke! That Lizward is perfection, btw. |

Love the lizard! They always steal the show. The calm atmosphere in this makes me feel all relaxed.

I admit I never paid much attention to Zhantee, he never really stood out to me despite being critical in some storylines. This, however, has my attention. I think you really did an amazing job on him. The addition of the jackwolves is a terrific addition, and you drew them perfectly. Somehow, I really love the one looking back at Dart and company. The lizard, let's face it, everyone loves the lizard! It somehow reminds me of all the anoles where I live. They even get into my house, but it's hard to be annoyed by something so damn cute. The coloration in this, the background details, just stunning! This is definitely one I could see as a comic cover or even a poster.

Awww, in your house? That's so cool! Do they cause any harm?

I am always in awe of your marker coloring. You did such a fantastic job with Zhantee. I like how even though he is in the foreground, seeing him pay attention to Dart makes our eyes draw over there. Not to mention the wolves! Love how you rendered them. Great work!

Yeah the composition as Startear mentions is very in character - great job. The detail in this drawing is fabulous, and I loooooove your wolves so much It has a very "slice of life" feel to it, a snapshot from a regular day, which is wonderful

Afke, this is in one word: fantastic. Calm, observant Zhantee in the foreground takes the viewer directly in. One can almost hear the low voices of the others, the rustle of the critters and the sounds of the desert at dusk (or dawn?). We listen to all this and observe together with Zhantee. Wonderful!

Thanks, everyone! It's nice to hear you appreciate my picture, AND Zhantee himself of course. I've been wanting to draw him for a few years really, but this time he fit the theme so well.
Like I said in a comment to the picture of Jirda, who is also a character who's content with their place in the world, Zhantee seems as well. He doesn't think he's all that special, he doesn't mind being in the shadows of others, and I literally put him in a big shadow here. I was a bit worried he would look too flat because of that, but that is just what happens in the shade. I posted a few work in progress photos on my IG; it really is just Copic markers. Not much use for white ink this year; he's not in any light himself, and the rest are in a sunset for which the bright yellow was enough for the most part. The lightest pink in the sky is the colour of the paper I used. Since there's not much action going on, I poured a lot in the background; the lizard is there, because otherwise that spot would've been too empty to me. |

Enjoying some shadow, even though it seems to be sunset already? Very nice colouring, the mood is really palpable. The scent of the petals (I just think they have some) perceivable. Even with so many characters and animals it manages to remain calm. Lazy summer evening. And Zhantee deserves some attention, indeed.
