RTH's current quarterly contest is called "Random Combos". I was assigned Blacksnake, (his younger brother) Suddendusk , and the activity "making music". This is more or less what popped into my head.
This is, obviously, set back when both were much younger -- specifically when Suddendusk was a young teen. He is supposed to be an inventive type who enjoys thinking up slightly odd things. Not that the concept of musical instruments is odd to the elves, but they wouldn't really need a "hunting horn" type of thing, since they are perfectly capable of howling, like their wolves. I feel like he's just noodling around, seeing what he can come up with, in contrast to his practical-minded older brother.
For this piece I certainly reffed things like the ram's skull and the proper posture for flint-knapping and whittling, as well as sleeping wolves, from various pictorial sources.
Fineline and Sharpie marker, Copic marker coloring, various effects in Photoshop.

*facepalm* Oh man, if only I'd thought of that! That would have been perfect. I went around and around on how to render the not-really-melodious sound of the horn. (I did see a thing on YouTube a bit back that proved that the BRAAHHMM-BRAAHHMM-BRAAHHMM sound was actually directly related to the "Non, je ne regrette rien" theme that cropped up elsewhere in the movie, which I never would have noticed on my own, but was pretty cool. I thought it was just Hans Zimmer being Hans Zimmer...)

Lush coloring, love those textures (especially on the wolves), and cute concept.
