Story illo for "Descent into The Depths of the Soul." This was another wonderful epic by Pat McKay for my Holt of Grand Illusions that is rather lengthy and complicated for so little room we're allowed. This is the throne chamber shaped and forged by a group of surviving High Ones that fled to the safety of deep caverns. For generations they thrived, but slowly, over time, much as with Timmain and her survivors, death, dispersal, and departures dwindled the numbers. Eventually, the caverns and the chambers were neglected and forgotten, lost to the descendants of the survivors. This is what remains at the beginning of the story - scattered bones, cobwebs, and decay...but not entirely empty...

Oh, I forgot to mention that this is an old illo so there are a lot of flaws I see with it already. Still, I just thought it would be fun to post, something a little different but still Elfquest related.

This is fabulous and incredibly detailed! You're so patient! Are those spirits or images of elves on the wall next to the throne?

The whole concept, design, depths is gorgeous. If I would write a book I could imagine hiring you as my illustrator very well.

Wow, I never thought I'd get such flattering comments on this, but thank you all! It did take a while to finish, but I kept in mind that the High Ones were drawn to ornate designs and surrounded themselves with "pretty things." I then tried to envision what that would look like when abandoned for many centuries. Why the bones? Well, the story gives a better reason than I could. I don't do a lot of interior images; I feel I never quite get that spacial aspect right.

Razzle: those are supposed to be images, paintings of elves that blend into the stylized sky painted on the ceiling. A sort of nod to the origin of and connection to the High Ones. That was the idea, anyway.

Treefox: I am overwhelmed! Thank you!

I wish you would; I'm still trying to get a "feel" of what the dwelling spaces look like. I want to add something along those lines to the one of Emoryiana, but I'm still not sure what the overall Stone Tower Holt looks like.

All in this piece is wonderful. Truly. The detail on the throne, pattern, shading and frame. I could go on forever with what I like in this piece. But what I love most, which many will probably find strange is... how you've drawn those skulls. My room is decorated with skulls (made of plastic) and I have a very hard time drawing them. Always amazed when people manage to get them right.
