Mehadrin Collaboration
by Amberfox
I'm posting this but I'm extremely disappointed with it. My scanner hates reds, and as you can see, this is pretty much a study in red and green (happy with the greens, though). That rose is so lifelike, but you'd never know it looking at what's posted. DAMN! Anyway, this was drawn by our own beloved Berit and features his obnoxious Mehadrin (I read the games, trust me, he's obnoxious). I volunteered to color it, but I'm thinking it's time to practice digital coloring. At least I put a bunch of sparkling on his diaphanous...uh...poncho? Berit, I think I'll have to send this to you so you won't be as disappointed as I am, but hey - I gave it a shot!

Whoa! this came out very stunning! a wonderfully colored version! And Yeah, my scanner also hates red! some details just vanish!... but there is a lot of details here! so even if some details were eaten by the scanner this is still amazing! and I think that... poncho thing... look absolutely FABULOUS like it should! thank you so much for coloring this!...

I can understand so well why you would be disappointed with this because of the scan... especially with shades of red it always seems to be hard to get correctly scanned. I also experienced the same with all the shades I put in Ember's hair... *sighs*
However, I also agree with Berit that this still looks splendid! The red that did come through is intense an marvelous! Also the way you handled the transparency of his Poncho (btw, that's a good description for that thing). Transparency of clothing is so, so much harder to do traditionally! I love the green you chose! Really, I am always happy to see your art whether its colorings or your marvelous b/w work. |

This looks marvelous already! I wonder how great it must be IRL. I agree with the scanner thing -- it has never done any justice to my art either. I actually prefer to take photos of my traditional work because of it.

I sometimes play around with various settings and contrasts, and then merge those scans in Photoshop, erase what's bad so the colour of the other settings pops up. I also learned a bunch of tricks from a colleague to edit certain parts of colour in a photo, that saves me a lot of frustrations (mostly with white not cooperating -- black and white no problem, but white and colours; are either yellow or blue).
If you wouldn't have said anything I wouldn't have noticed anything. We critique our own works the most. I think it looks marvellous, rose and all. |

Thank you everyone. I did post a new illo featuring this and a photo from my phone camera. The camera picked up a lot of the subtle reds, oranges, and pinks but faded out the rest of the colors while the scanner killed the reds and did well with the rest. Can't win! I did play around with a lot of filters, settings, and contrasts, but I honestly couldn't get anything to work better than what I've posted. It's possible the programs I have are just too basic. I used to have programs I could do a lot of manipulations, but I can't seem to do that anymore. Plus, not a computer person. I do appreciate all your very kind words and advise.
