Happy 46th birthday, Elfquest!
I didn't quite make it in time, but close. So, here's the next entry in my portrait series, Rayek. What a complex character without whom Elfquest would not be what it is. His journey from being rather self-centered, arrogant and needing the confirmation of his worth from others to becoming the caring, often selfless officially certified hero that he is now. And his journey is not over! Will we see it's conclusion one day? Again, I tried to incorporate all the elements that shaped Rayek on his life's journey in this portrait.
Next will be the sketch for the calendar entry!

Oh, very beautifully done! His left arm/hand seem a little off, but who the hell cares? Maybe his "snapshot" was taken at a slightly awkward moment in the midst of a reaction. Rayek never really did much for me, but this illo really captures the best and worst of who and what he was. If I wasn't familiar with the character and his story/journey, I would be very intrigued merely by this image and do a serious deep dive into his tale. You really portray his features perfectly, the high sharp cheekbones and equally sharp pointed chin. The skin tone is stunning and his eyes simply glow. Love the addition of Venka's beaded headband decoration and the amazing snake coiled around his neck. Great detailing and shading! The polearm is wonderful, too; I want it! Can't compliment this enough without sounding like I'm being paid for it. This is gorgeous and I can't wait to see what's next from you!

Woooo! You are fast! Thank you so much! Your feedback is always so, so appreciated! I love that Rayek is such an ambiguous character. He such a great and fascinating story arc and character development. It's fun to go through all that in your head when you draw a portrait like this. You really reflect on the character and try to incorporate what he means to you.
And man, again it DID take long to draw this...
His left hand... I actually like it and the pose, I think it's too small... There are other things that still bother me a bit, but I just had to let it go at one point. Otherwise, I would never finish this.
And actually, that's the first snake I ever drew. At least I think it is.... I like how the colors turned out on her. What is slightly depressing for me, I could never have achieved this with traditional media... Trying out things, undoing them, moving things around... digital drawing does make it so much easier, albeit not faster.

Ahh! This is fantastic. I think you've managed to get ahold of the digital medium with your Leetah and Rayek. I can look at these and know they are digital but they remind me so much of your traditional artwork. I think that's the most difficult thing, you're right, digital is great for being able to "fix" mistakes (that would otherwise cause you to have to start fresh) but I think it takes a bit to get your style down because it's quite different from traditional mediums. I think you've arrived there, great work!

Thank you so much, Maggie! Coming from a digital master like yourself, this means a lot to me.
It really is so different from using traditional mediums, I built up the structure of the pictures in a completely different way. Another thing about these two portraits is, that they took time, a lot of time. I really refined and re-drew so many things. That helped getting closer to what I originally envisioned.
And, of course, getting better and better in using the software is another big factor. So, I want to keep improving!
Your feedback is always such a great motivation!

Squeeeeeee!
I must congratulate myself to look by today and check "unseen images" (they usually are a few hundred, as I hardly get to all of them). However, it was one more than "usual". Then I spotted this intense colour set and knew before reading the title.
*glompses screen*

This is a very intense and vibrant image! Vibrant by colours, but also by expression. The brightly shining star. ^^ Awww!
You go the eyes so good.
And there are so many items and hints. Traditional outfit and pattern on the headband, Ekuar-ish elements, crystal shards, black snake, the inner cape features symbols that could be either Sunvillage or Go-Back style, the spear is part Sorrow's End part modern-could-be-forged-by-TwoEdge. Well, and this fiery background.
And it is good to see him happy, ascending, looking forward here.
It does partially look like done with oil crayons. This should be an art-print.
(By the way, this also coincides (?) with February's "challenge coin". I didn't really get the concept of these coins but anyway, the totally late one featured Rayek, also.)
This would also make a good background on a pivot-screen 90° rotated. Well, or on a normal screen. This aspiring atmosphere looks motivating to me.

Awwww!! Thank you so, so very much! Like Amberfox, I was hoping that you would like my Rayek portrait.
The cape actually includes very stylized symbols for the Go-Backs, Gliders, Sun-Folk and a hardly visible bit of Wolfrider. The spear is actually Kahvi's spear that she
had in the Original Quest. My way of including her. :)
And I absolutely wanted to show him facing the future with resolve and hope. I hope we'll get to see what's next for him.
BTW, I didn't get the meaning of these coins either....
