Chit-Chat / Re: Tell us about yourself
« on: April 01, 2025, 01:41:30 PM »
Traveling:
It all comes with benefits and drawbacks.
There are the positive aspects of moving things by yourself in walking/hiking or using a bicycle. Of course, this is limited in reach and the amount of material that can be transported.
Trains could be nice if they were reliable. It is environmentally friendly and one can spend the time with other things than vigilantly watching the traffic.
Amount of possible luggage is moderate, but one often still has to reach the actual destination by different means. Trains work acceptably well between large cities and when being on time.
Trains can be very crowded and belated, also oneself has to be on time for the departure and is less flexible in that regard.
Cars. Depending on the motor and driving style more or less harmful to the environment. On the good side it is very flexible both in time as well as in destinations (unless over oceans, of course) and transporting goods is fairly easy. One usually has privacy in the car. One still has to deal with other participants in traffic, which can be exhausting.
So I prefer whatever is most suitable for the currently planned travel.
(plushies and figurines: Yes, I do have them.
Comics: Nah, I stay with EQ, though I might occasionally have a glance at something else, but I got enough text books to read, as well as some fantasy literature, so there is little time for another series of comics. I might feel tempted, still, once in a while.
book, movie/TV show: Could not decide*, I do hardly watch TV or similar things, and for movies it would be hard to decide, too.)
[* if I really had to: I do have some text books or a philisophical book, which might require much time to read and correctly understand, so maybe something like that, to keep me busy
]
Question:
How does your time management work?
(If that is too abstract, then answer to: How much art do you draw, to which percentage is this ElfQuest, and are you satisfied with the amount you draw?)

Trading Post / new ElfQuest Pins (2025)
« on: March 28, 2025, 02:42:27 AM »
I hope this still fits with the forum rules, it is meant as a little heads-up. I am not selling anything here.
So just in case it is not known, yet, there are some Elfquest Pins as relatively new (official) merchandise:
https://arcanevault.com/elfquest-pin-cutter/
10 USD
size here is roughly 3,25 cm x 4,14 cm.
https://arcanevault.com/elfquest-pin-collection/
108 USD for 12 pins in a first issue (seems to be a pre-order), most characters can be guessed by the shadow-shape

Not having a question; but for the tea: first off: fresh herbs, not dry and very old, higher concentration, nettle (stinging nettle, Brennessel), wormwood (Wermut). If wormwood isn't tart enough for you... then these is hardly any help. Of course anything with high content in essential oils like (pepper)mint, ginger, galangal (Galgant/Laos), chili peppers ^^... or drink Tom Yum and related soups broth like a tea. ;-)
Of course, these oil are - by their nature - rather hydrophobic and work better in fatty media than in water. They even might accumulated as little droplets. There are also several herbal mixes of less common herbs, that might also be strong in taste. Oh, and I remember common yarrow (Schafgarbe) as relatively intense. In theory also mugwort (Beifuß) and others. Vegetable broth.

First: Awww, teddy-bear! Second thought: Heh, that scarf. Looks like Clearbrook. And Dewshine. And maybe Rillfisher with the fish. Nice details, again, that are landmarks in the character's story.

Welcome to this old school forum.
Yes, EQ is something that inspired several people to (re)start doing artwork.
I also often wonder why it is not that present and popular.

Well, the hole is nicely where I wanted it and the coil goes through the planter as planned.
The colours are shifted, however, a touch too bright and hue-shifted in some areas, too.

I see benefits and possible drawbacks to most topics.
There are also some interesting new suggestions by Wildfire, though "colours" would require then 12+1 colours - which is manageable, of course, but there would then be different tones (wavelength/hue, saturation, luminance) of basic colours.
"Clothes swap" could be funny. I wonder how far the calendar was strict canon or still-canon-related. How much freedom is there? We all might have added custom random elves for crowded scenes, so that would already not be 100% canon, but even WaRP uses "extras"/"supernumerary actors" (whatever the correct English term is).
"Pivotal moments" sound interesting, but we'd have to assume that something happened behind the curtains, that was not (yet) shown. But then, one has to be careful with the sheer amount of EQ publications, as there is chance that something was actually explained somewhere else.
Sentimental items would likely also offer a good amount of possibiities, from Troll with their gold and alcoholic beverage or tools, to Cutter's NewMoon, a pentdant,...
Only crossovers seem a bit too off-canon for me (obviously). Of course, there'd be a broad range of possibilities.
So far I am quite undecided.
But I'll have to see how I get in traction this year, anyway.

I don't have a super-current state of things, but some days prior in the internal thread it was mentioned, that there are still some submissions pending. I sent mine this Sunday. *phew* Finally.
So I do not know about how many entered since then, but I guess you might want to get in check with Maggie.

On some previous questions:
cooking more than baking, because I can correct things more easily. Baking gone wrong is... well, gone wrong.
There are some dishes, though I am not entirely certain how far they count as truly regional and traditional. And if one does not eat e.g. fish, this will already bring up a few dishes. But there should be Saumagen dishes or Saure Flecke. Both are about innards. Also "Mett" (raw minced meat) is not my thing, onions, salt and pepper or not. (Fried is something different.)
Mashed potatoes (in different degrees of mashedness) is a popular starch base here, too; nutmeg is not entirely uncommon with it.
The Dutch cuisine would be interesting to explore. The few times I was there... well, Lekker smullen in Febo. De lekkerste. ;-)
So that was mostly just fast food / junk(?) food.
But then, yes, there should be more spices. At least there is sometimes Sambal Oelek or peanut sauce (satay sauce).
Holidays:
Umm... for the remainder of this year? I assume Christmas (German: Weihnachten, lit. holy night(s) / consecrated night(s); 24th (Heiligabend lit.: holy evening), 25th and 26nd of Dec.).
There are few other public holidays til then, besides the Advent sundays and the non-spare-time Nikolaus (Sinterklaas, St. Nicholas, which is the 6th of Dec.) (As far as I know the Dutch people are more into Sinterklaas; and Kerstfest is a little less popular. Here Christmas is about the biggest thing, followed by Easter, Pentecost and New Year.)
Well, re-unification day, 3rd of October. When divided Germany became one country again. I'd wish that for the Korean people, too, however, without repeating the mistakes we made during this process.
(Halloween is not that much here, though commerce is trying to push it. For us, there is Reformation Day, when Martin Luther's 95 theses were put to the doors of the church (and he sent letters with them in all directions). Catholics rather have Allerseelen. There are also Totensonntag (Sunday of the Deceased) and regional Buß- und Bettag (day for prayers and repentance).)
Well. A question is needed.
What atmosphere do you prefer for drawing your EQ art? Are there any prerequisites?

Living under the roof I painfully know about the heat. It slows me down and it feels like my brain wants to melt.
About the life-skills. Well. First off, one might want to check what counts as life-skill. Moreover, it might be different from person to person when it comes to "rating". I am not certain how much other people value wich skill, I can only make some estimations from my position.
I would say:
Intelligence. Empathy. And also a sort of integrity.
But it might be my cognitive bias that I value these things and I often miss them "out there".
Let's try with a relatively grounded question, that is hopefully easy to answer for everyone. Inspired by the current warmth and my very recent consumption of it:
Do you have a favourite sort of ice-cream - and which is it / are they?

Art and Elfquest / printed calendar for 2023
« on: February 03, 2023, 10:58:20 AM »
Eventually arrived. Took some time, even though print on demand should be fairly quick... it's all digital these days, but whatever took Zazzle/shipment.
Quality is okay, the parcel's contents received a few minor dents from shipment. And some parts were cut off by printing alingment. (From the upper rim a relatively small band of pixels is missing.) The coil still goes right through the lower image. Well. Whatever.
So it was good to print metadata on the last page's backside.
Apart from the mentioned things it looks pretty good.
One might think about a 20 pixel mat/frame of e.g. pure white within the 3300x2550 range, since they'll cut it off or break the coil holes through it, anyway.
Oh, and the hole for the nail, it's in the middle and roughly 1 cm from the top. So we shouldn't have any relevant image content there, either. ^_^

This won't be an easy decision.
Some classic topics; then Cliffhanger... which kind of screams for bridge of destiny.
Encounters is a wide field, but that's fine.
Inside life could be in a lot of different places, forest tree nests to troll caves or human huts.
All Elders... does that mean high ones, elderly (looking) elves? Ancestors?
I already have some vague ideas for some topics. But I can hardly decide. O.o
I'm only slightly biased against makers since I just drew this. Though it would still leave open a lot of possibilities, also beyond art-making.

Happy new year! May things improve around the world for the better.
And we do have a lot of beautiful art to look at. So I'd call that a good start. I'll continue sighting it as I can, but there's also family I have to tend to.
I also received some of the physical EQ audio-book/movie backer stuff yesterday. So somebody (totally not grumpy) sends you greetings as well.

I'll take pictures of the whole group later.

Backer packages still need some time for the physical rewards.
I guess one can listen, but rating very very likely needs an account. And of course, they'd like you to spread the word, rate it (high) and so on, for a possible follow-up.

If you received a faulty calendar you can write to Zazzle's support. I also told them about the problem (incl. illustrating imagery), in hope they can find the cause and fix it. And they offered me to send new exemplars.
