I sculpted this doll's parts from scratch and then assembled. Eventually I plan to have different body bits that can be assembled to make your own custom-ish doll. I may also take on custom face plate sculpts, but this is all I have for now. To see what her base sculpt looks like please feel free to take a look at some of my other posts. Thanks for looking!

Aw, what a cutie! I think she would be fun to sculpt...
In Joyleaf - Posted Oct 14, 2012
Oh, she is done in multicolor clay. I just add paint for eyes, hair final coloring, and little things like that. Chalk to make her skin not so monotone and to add even more depth to hair and whatnot. I should prolly take some pre-paint pics just for comparison.

I know her eyes are abnormally large... I was not paying as much attention to them as I should have and I think, after looking at the pics long enough, that her hairline might be a little low. Ah well, better luck on the next sculpt. Oh, and in the long run, she is meant to carry her bow in the left hand.

Yeah, props are a weakness for me while sculpting... Skywise's lodestone should not be too much trouble, but knives and swords need that mechanical edge and my sculpting is more... erm... organic... I will get those done asap, but they may be questionable in quality.

I will say, in defense of the lack of many high quality sculpts, that this style of character is very hard to get just right. Body measurements and height are pretty easy once a sculptor has a good grasp on anatomy (I am still hard at work on this), but the faces of Wendy's characters are so very specific that if the sculptor gets even a little bit off it looks wrong. No matter what formulas exist for flat art, one must change them and visualize a 3-D image in their head while trying to remain true to the flat art. Its a royal pain to make the figure look good and remain true to the profile and straight on shot, particularly in the eyes.
Oh, and Rayek is on my list for upcoming sculpts and he is gonna be fun because so very little of him is usually covered up by cloth in the early years!! Yay for sculpting anatomy!! I have been trying to get just the right color of clay to do Sunfolk so that's the holdup on Leetah, Rayek, Suntop, Ember... pretty much anyone with a tan or that lovely dark skin.

The day I started this piece I was just playing with a bit of tin foil at a friends house. I ended up using that foil for the entire armature. I had some colored sculpy with me and just started sculpting away. I eyeballed all measurements (which is why the left hand is horrid) but for a simple sculpt with little to no thought going into it, I feel it came out pretty darn good. I have the body, pants, shirt, and head done on a Skywise as of this morning. I still need his hair and headband, hands, feet and arm guards done before I do the touch-up paint and take pics. Started it yesterday afternoon and I can't wait til I can post pics up here as well!
Guys can be easier to sculpt than girls, but in the near future a female is in the lineup. I am gonna run out of shelf space to put these little guys! Am thinking of starting up quick sculpts for peeps characters if I get good at this. The trick for me is the face... can I get the face to look right. Oh, and the figure is about 4 inches tall in his crouched pose, if standing straight up he would be about 4.5 inches at the top of his top knot.

Yeah, the pale white-ish one is the true color of the resin, but I have been fighting with my camera to get correct settings. I just settled for a bunch of pics and said to heck with the camera settings... And yeah, I am all nerdy about the ears, I like the heavy look of the older style best for my gal.
Oh, and I did this doll all the way up from scratch. Been sculpting Rune in white premo. I don't recommend that stuff for this particular application after having done it though since it stays a little bit rubbery after baking. I am working three more dolls currently using super sculpy and I like the solid cooked nature of it much more for fine manipulation, stringing of the doll, and its resistance to bending and mis-forming. The only hangup is the lack of ease when looking at the surface. Its much easier to see the surface of white/grey than it is to see translucent flesh tone.

Tee hee! I am on at last. I will get a color copy of Draw and his sisters hair done as soon as I can. (Hope its ok that I will be using the above sketch to color on). Is this site happy with seeing pics of sculpture as well as flat art?

Tee hee, Rune is lovely! Well, when you draw her she is... It is always so lovely to see my girl the way you draw her, thank you for all that work!
