2013 Fan Art Calendar Guidelines
The theme for the 2013 Elfquest Fan Art Calendar is:
Every Picture Tells a Story
Submissions for the 2013 Calendar Contest are being accepted:
July 9th through November 23rd, 2012
THEME
- Submitted artwork should represent the theme "Every Picture Tells a Story."
- Elfquest is a comic - comics mean telling a story with art (maybe words, too) in panels. Each entry would be a single image made up of at least two, but probably no more than six panels (please PM Maggie if you plan on having more than six panels). They can be arranged any way you like but the total image must conform to the calendar size (TBD). The story: any theme you like because the theme is telling a story! What kind of story - well, it doesn't have to be (and probably shouldn't be) too complicated. Just a little interaction between characters: something funny or sweet or violent or action-packed. (Note: this is not a "what if," it has to be canon-compatible).
CONTENT
- Entries must be original artwork created specifically for the calendar. The use of photos or "borrowed" art for backgrounds is not allowed.
- Entries must not be available for the general public to view online until the okay is given for general sharing. Before then, any entries found online in any form (thumbnails, crops, etc.) will be disqualified and removed.
- Canon Elfquest characters (of any race) only. No what-if characters (i.e., Worldpool).
- PG-13 or under.
FORMAT
- All entries should be in full color.
- Size: 8" X 10" (vertical)
- Resolution: 2400 X 3000 pixels @300dpi
- File format: JPEG or PNG (Cafe Press recommends PNG files to prevent ghosting when the calendar is printed)
HOW TO SUBMIT
- Calendar entries will be viewed by the judging panel at Elfquest Fan Art http://www.elfquestfanart.net (http://www.elfquestfanart.net) and displayed there once the calendar is published. However, due to size constraints at the site, you will still have to email your full-sized entry to Maggie. Please PM Maggie when you have an entry ready to be submitted.
- Artists may submit up to three entries.
- Entries must be received by midnight PST, November 23rd, 2012.
- Include the following:
- Title (Required): Title of your submission. Titles will be included on the calendar.
- Description (Optional): Any text/story/quote you feel enhances your artwork.
- Keywords (Optional): Keywords are used for the gallery "search" feature only. After final selections have been made, all submissions will be made available to visitors.
- Artist Credits (Required): Will be included on the calendar. Your real name or preferred artist's credit name.
- Preferred Month (Optional): What month you would like your entry to be featured on (no guarantees, though).
- Email (Required)
CREDIT
- The artist credit and the email listed with your entry will used for credits.
- The Warp Graphics, Inc. copyright will be included for you.
PUBLISHING
- The twelve winners will be chosen by a panel of judges: Sonny Strait, Maggie Atkinson (TBA)
- The finished calendar will be available for download at elfquest.com and at elfquestfanart.net. In addition, the Calendar will most likely be published at Elfquest's Cafe Press shop. Proceeds from the sale of the Fan Calendar will go to Wolf Park. http://www.wolfpark.org (http://www.wolfpark.org)
QUESTIONS
- Any questions about the calendar may be asked and answered on this thread or PM Maggie.

So... it's not decided yet what the size should be, but also not the shape? Square / landscape / portrait?

So... it's not decided yet what the size should be, but also not the shape? Square / landscape / portrait?
We are looking into a portrait type calendar on Cafe Press, it is 11 x 17 I believe but we have yet to find out about how big the image is, as the calendar grid shares the page with the image. Hopefully we'll know soon.
-
Yeah, I'm helping Maggie figure out where to publish this, and it looks like we are going to go back to letting Richard publish it at Cafe Press. Has anyone here ever ordered one of their vertical calendars? Like this one: http://www.cafepress.com/elfquest.188066915 (http://www.cafepress.com/elfquest.188066915)
If so, can you measure the actual image space for us?
Treefox and Maggie were interested in these calendar images not only being in panels like a comic, but actually being the usual comics dimensions. It looks like it works reasonable well with the CP vertical calendar (as seen in the link above - those are comics covers). I figure most of you should be at the idea stage at this time, but unless artists don't want to do a vertical format for some reason, plan on something around a comics page dimension.
-
I may have stumbled on to some details about size, hopefully I will be able to add that to the guidelines sometime this week (fingers crossed).
-
The “Format†and “Publishing†sections have been updated in “Calendar Guidelinesâ€.
-
It should be noted that the 8 x 10 inches is vertical or portrait oriented. ;)
-
And that is why you have been in charge for so many years. Thanks. ;D
-
Can these entries be collaborations? IE - I am not great at coloring but may be able to talk a friend into helping me. My own style would take way too long in the Panel Format to finish in time.
-
Ohhh, Sonny Strait is one of the judges? That's pretty cool! Also, you guys are awesome, you put so much work and time into these things <3
I'll definitely enter, I'm off to brainstorming now.
Should we include a border around the panels or will it be added automatically afterwards?
-
Alright, I'm sold. I'll get to work on it. What was the deadline? You guys know I'm a procrastinator, but I'm really trying to get better about that.... ::)

Yep, Sonny has agreed to be a judge. ;D
I am thinking as of now, no border. If we do go with a border I think it makes sense for them all to match.
-
Oh lord... I dont know what I am going to draw... mutter mutter mutter two panels maybe.. Story that has not been drawn to death... Grumbles to herself.
-
So nice Sonny will be a judge. :)
Oh, perhaps a tip if you find it difficult to think of an idea because there's not really a theme (myself included)... think of ideas you had for previous calendars, but had to discard because you had no time, or the idea wouldn't really come across because you needed an extra panel? :) Or whatever reason you didn't go through with it, but could still work.
-
@ Tah-Marien: we have done collaborations in the past with great succes, so go ahead! Just give the coloring artists proper credit. Just look at the collaboration between afke and Bonita for Newstar in the pinup calendar or nilla's collaboratin with Jeedai for Jink. I think they look great!
@ silentleaf: if you still cannot think of anything, just drop me a line, I have several ideas going. :D
-
good news! two ideas in the works. whew !
-
NOOOO my wacom tablet is not working!! CRY~!!!
-
I have a few ideas myself.
Also, I'm going to be open for coloring.
-
Really looking forward to getting mine started. Got my thumbnails all planned out!

Ayoooooooah! I have a couple of ideas as well...now if I could just get the ideas in my head onto paper to look as good as the ideas, darn it!
-
I am sure you'll manage. :D
-
Question R - Canon Characters ? Can the the Blood of Ten Chiefs Novels be accepted material ? Or are the Novels considered Worldpool ?

I am using a character from the Blood of Ten Chiefs novel so I don't see why you can't use the comic. ;)
-
:o Truly awesome!
I wish I would also make some progress. Due to not being at home my layout is getting delayed and delayed...
-
You still have lot's of time Treefox. ;)
-
Uh oh, I hate to admit I've been procrastinating... I've got the idea, just need to find a way to put it on paper! I'm kind of excited of how this will turn out!

Apparently there is something WONKY with my laptop... my wonderful BF put photoshop on another computer for me and my tablet works fine! THANK THE LORD!!! THINGS ARE IN THE WORKS!
-
Sweet! ;D
-
So.. I've been super busy with school and have done almost nothing! with my sketch... Its rough but a cute idea would anyone want to color it? Sorry sigh I am taking a double load of classes. i have 3 major papers to write this weekend.. LOVE YOU GUYS!
-
I hope someone wants to colour your idea, I know it is probably super cute. I wish I could help out but that would probably be a conflict of interest...haha. ;D
-
I would like to offer to color it, if that's not against our policy, as I am also planning to enter something myself. But if that's OK, I would LOVE to do it!
-
OK! I will sent what i have to you dearie!! message me your email!
-
Message sent! ;D
-
Sorry guys, I won't be submitting anything this year. I haven't been thinking about it at all, I've had so many other things tossed on my path, there's just no room! :o Just thought I'd let you know, so you won't be expecting anything that is not coming.
-
Thanks letting us know, afke.
I can hardly imagine a calendar without an entry from you. Be sure it will be missed!
-
Thanks for letting us know Afke. :'(
-
I am honest-to-god actually working on mine. I'm very proud. And slow. Mostly slow. (of course, doing three emotional shots of a character I've never drawn before isn't really helping.)
Is the comic thing working out for you guys?
-
It seems that this calendar topic is really asking rather too much for many people. I love the idea and I love drawing comics, but I can see that the time needed probably exceeds the time needed for a one picture entry.
I do hope you will not give up on your entry! I would love to see it!
-
Oh, I'm not giving up, no worries there. I'm always slow with both calendar entries AND comics, so both at once? Yeah.
I rather like my entry so far, Volls face is just weird xD
-
I'm having troubles with getting started on this. For one, I don't do comics. They just aren't me, especially when they aren't my characters its hard to get the focus and personality right. But for the main thing, work and life are restricting, when I finally get rest, I'm needing to work on request art. I don't think I'd be able to submit a comic for the calender, and this isn't for lack of trying... Trust me, there are many scrapped sketches and things that just didn't work.
I might try again, see if I could come up with anything, but it is highly doubted. Sorry, Treefox.
-
I'll be honest -- there's certainly enough time left for me to get something done, so I'm not concerned about that, but... I just don't have any ideas. I've been keeping the concept percolating in the back of my mind, hoping an idea would come up, but I've had no luck so far. ???
I'm going to be renewing efforts to come up with something workable in the next week, but... well, if anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to send me a message here! Or an email. Can't promise what will catch my fancy, but clearly, my brain needs a kick-start of some kind.
I'd prefer -- and this will be SUCH a shock, coming from me! -- something that involves the wolfriders from Bearclaw's time period. And I'd prefer wolfriders, overall. But will certainly consider anything at this point.
-
That's really too bad, Destiny. Another entry that'll surely be missed badly.
Eregyrn, sent you a PM!
-
I have one idea. My main problem isn't time really, it is execution. :-[
-
That's too bad Startear! If I weren't working on two entries already, I'd love to assist you. I don't like it, when a good idea gets wasted... :-\
-

WHAT!? No...you...Bearclaws time...never. Haha, well you know what would be awesome, something with Bearclaw and the trolls, we only got to see a glimpse of that in the original comic but I can see some funny stuff coming from an interaction like that.
-
I always said that a whole comic would be a bit much for me. As much as I liked the experience of the fanart calendars last year I remebered also how long it took. So as I said: I hope the people who voted so eagerly for "comic" as topic are also willing to contribute.
I already canceled EQ cal. things for me this year cause I guessed there would not be enough time. First to have a halfway good idea (which is probably the easier part), then to bring it to paper or pixel.
Besides, that was probably one of the most stressful autumns I had. And stress burns away creative enrgies. Summer was nearly no different. So even if I had started or intended to, I would not have been able to finish in time. I am not so skilled that I make up things in a few minutes. And most important for me is my leisure, my brain running free, no duties, no worries...
without it I can't really get creative. And sadly that I was missing a lot this year.
I though wish I had had the time to contribute.
Oh well. I hate stress.
But don't let anyone be dragged down by these words. :)

16 days and counting…
How is everyone doing with their entries? I have received emails or PM's from quite a few people updating me on their progress, which is very much appreciated.
Based on the work that has been sent in and the updates I think this calendar is going to be quite lovely.
Keep working and sending those calendar pages in, I want this year’s judges to have some work on their hands. ;D
-
