Please post here if you find any bugs or problems with the site. I'm already working on v1.1 of the site, just a few tweaks and enhancements, and the more bugs I can fix the better.
Thanks! :D
-
So far we've got:
* general slowness, which we are trying to remedy
* image hotlink prevention is currently disabled
* image embedding on elfquest.com is currently not working
* some more polishing of the visual presentation is needed

Well...site is finally up, and I'm going to bed. I know this is a bad idea. I'll wake up and it'll be all dead and slaughtered and hacked and crashed and stuff.
*afraid*
-
I don't think it has anything to do with the forum, but more with the site: I got the message just now that the site had exceeded (temporarily I must add) it's maximum connections. Just wanted to let you know.
-
Oh frack, I'm seeing it too. Thanks. I'll have to talk to our webhost to see if something can be arranged. I thought they were scaleable, but after a bunch of DoS attacks a few years ago they may have gotten paranoid.
-
Interesting...from their FAQ:
What does the error "This site has temporarily exceeded its connection limit." mean?
This error means there are too many simultaneous non-cacheable requests in progress for your site. This is an extremely rare condition, but the causes, in order of decreasing likelihood, are:
1. For sites like CMS or blog sites that generate content dynamically, a spammer or email address harvester attempts to hit all or a large number of the site's pages at once. Our system will throw up this error to dissuade the spammer and stop them from dragging the whole server down. In this case, the message will typically only appear for a few seconds to a couple of minutes; as soon as they start getting errors, they move on.
2. This message can also occur if requests for your site content hang or take an inordinately long time to complete. In such cases, they can backlog to the point where the server feels that allowing more of them to build up would just cause a death spiral. (I.e. more requests taking longer causing more requests to take even longer, wash-rinse-repeat until nothing happens at all).
3. Under exceptionally rare circumstances, this message can indicate that the server that hosts your site is having severe problems. Such conditions are automatically detected and we are notified, so they tend not to persist for very long.
4. If your site has several hundred simultaneous visitors for sustained periods of time, it's remotely possible to hit this limit even if your connections complete very quickly. In this case, and only in this case, we will raise the limit, because this limit provides your site with important protection against all the other cases. (Please be aware that while almost everyone starts out thinking this is the reason that applies to their situation, the cause almost inevitably turns out to be something else.)
(A good rule of thumb is that each possible explanation above is about ten times less likely than the one above it, so the top one is 90% likely and the bottom one is about 0.09% likely.)
So, according to them, 90% chance is that we were actually the target of a spammer/harvester. Already. ;D
Hrm, well, that would be flattering. I suspect #2 though, with a lot of people setting up their albums. Once people have their backlog uploaded the rush will hopefully die down.

:-[ For some reason, my quotes and apostrophes are showing up as question marks in two of my posts under Chief's Son :'(
-
They appear ok to me, so it probably has something to do with the character encoding. We'll see if we can rectify that...
-
I suspect it is happened due to a copy-paste mismatch...there are some quotes that look like quotes but are not understood by SMF (Word does this). Are you copying from another forum, or a document on your system?
-
Woops, there was a bug where not everyone with an album was showing up under the "User Albums" section (http://www.elfquestfanart.net/index.php?action=mgallery;sa=vua).
Fixed now!
-
Well, I was copying and pasting it from a forum. The first two posts came out fine, but the following two came out kind of screwy while the last one was alright, too.
-
Can you try re-pasting them now? We changed the forum so that there should not be further character mis-matches.
-
hmmm so on my album...
1. I can't upload anymore art, it like freezes and doesn't continue! its weird... help?
2. this is just a little tweak thing that doesn't hurt anybody... but it says i uploaded two of my pictures in October...? and its March...
-
@ Sweetwater: for item #2, we have set our gallery software to pull the creation date of a picture from EXIF data embedded inside the original picture. If this date is available, it'll use that as the upload date. That's probably what's going on. We could change it, or we could let the "upload date" to reflect the creation date -- thoughts?
For item #1, we'll do some poking around...
-
For #2 oh no its fine! no worries! i was just a little confused, and worried i had screwed something up!
I sorta like the idea of keeping it the way it is! so that people can see how much someone has improved over time! :)
#1 its working now... i dunno what went wrong... its probably just my blasted computer!

When I am on the forum's main page, the Gallery link on the right does not work ???.
The one at the top does, though, and when I'm in a subforum or the gallery the one of the left works, too.
Also, is it normal that when posting in the forum you get taken back to the forum instead of to your post? I find that slightly confusing :-[.

Hmmm...which browser are you using? I don't experience this problem (I'm guessing you meant left, not right...though if the gallery link is on the right, that would *definitely* be a problem!).

You can change this with a setting :)
Profile -> Look and Layout Preferences -> "Return to topics after posting by default."
Check that box.
-
Err, yes, left :-[ ...
Firefox, version 2.0.0.20
And thanks :).
Edit: It's working now though I didn't change anything ???. Ah well ::) ...
-
Ack, just found another bug. You can't set something to "mature" when you add it (though you can edit it after upload to make it mature).
Fixed! :D
-
It seems I can't add icons for folders in the gallery subsequently - when creating a folder it worked but neither when editing the folder itself nor editing a picture and checking the "Use as thumbnail" box. Have to try yet if it works if I upload a picture into an already existing folder sans thumbnail ...
Edit: Nope, that doesn't work either. Seems it only works when a folder is created.
-
Huh! You were sure to refresh the page after making the change? I usually have to refresh it twice myself (once to show the image, and a second time to get it to size right).
Lemme go test and make sure it works for me... Yep, I can still change the icon. But of course, I have admin permissions, so this could still be an issue for non-admins.
Don't suppose any other users could confirm whether it works or not for them?
-
0.o Okay, sorry, I was not aware that that was what was needed to do the trick - I always got transported back to the "My Gallery" page and then, when accessing the folders, there was nothing there :-[. But with refreshing it worked.
:-[ :-[ :-[
-
No no, no embarassed-faces needed. :) These things aren't always as intuitive as we'd like them to be. As nice as this gallery software is, it was only written at the end of 2008, and it's a free project by a couple of guys...it's bound to have some odd quirks.
-
Yeah, it's me again :-[ ... Just stumbled upon an error: I got a warning that I was not allowed to view mature content. Well, while I had not checked 'View mature content' the picture I tried to access was - hardly mature content and I could access it from the gallery overview ???.
Err ... Or there actually is a mature content pic between Sganaa's Norse Gods Group and her Illo for Undecided because I get the same message when clicking 'previous' on the latter and 'next' on the former. In that case the error would be that the gallery did not accept my change to the 'View mature content' setting ???.
I hope that was not too confusing ^^'.
Edit: Okay, found out via the 'Unseen' feature that it is indeed the latter case ... Yup, the box is checked in my profile and everything.
-
It sounds like it may be preventing you from viewing the wrong picture. I'll look into it.
In the meantime, there is another reason why you wouldn't be able to see mature content...if you hadn't entered your birthday into your forum profile.
-
:-[ Err ... Okay, then I need to do that *feels really, really daft*.
-
Don't feel daft. :P I made it hard to figure out on purpose. ;)
I fixed the problem where mature items were showing up under "unseen". Still trying to reproduce the other problem...
-
I got this error when I tried uploading a picture to the gallery today.

Plus I'm not sure if it's just me, but the pwetty background disappears from the lay-out if I browse too much through the site. When I go back to the main gallery page or the main forum page, it's back again.

That's not good. Did you get it more than once? If so, does it still occur? I uploaded a file just now with no problems, but it may be something admin's don't see. I'll try it in a bit with "bob".

That's intentional. :) I make it go away when you are reading a thread or looking at a picture, so that you won't have to scroll down so much (and so that it won't distract you from the important content).

I tried 3 times, but got the same. And I gave it another try just now, but got the error again.
There's not some file size limit that might cause this?
[Edit] I tried a different picture and that one did get uploaded. I tried the first one again but that one still won't. ???
-
There is a file size limit (1024 KB), but it's supposed to just tell you that.
The "alias" and "vhost" bit makes me wonder if it's something to do with our webhost doing a bit. This is something for Irianta to troubleshoot, though unfortunately he's stuck in meetings right now.
Looks like you did finally manage to upload something. Did you try something different (browser, filesize, etc)?
-
Unfortunately this is just a symptom of a larger issue. We are working on a remedy, but it's a rather major operation that is going to take a little while to execute.
-

I had 2 pictures I wanted to upload, and after finding out the 1st just wouldn't, I tried the 2nd and that one went up without a problem. So I still have another picture waiting to go online.
1st was 151 kb and the 2nd 80 kb. Both are JPG, 1st is almost a year old now. I don't see what other differences there might be between them..?
