As I haven't really done anything EQ related lately (meaning basically the last 2 years), I figured I could at least post some of the super-kitsch that I painted for various occasions. This one I must admit I'm rather proud of. This was done for the wedding of a good friend. She loves The Last Unicorn and so I decided to give her a unicorn related drawing for her wedding. Not that difficult, because I absolutely love that movie as well.
This was actually drawn directly into her wedding card. That paper was horrible to draw on! Still, I'm quite proud of how it came out in the end. But, oh, the kitsch... ah well.

THE LAST UNICORN!! love it!
-
Get out! I just watched The Last Unicorn last night 'cause I found a super-cheap copy of the 25th anniversary dvd at a local store. Brought back lots of memories. I love how you captured the Rankin-Bass stylized backgrounds, with their almost pointillist-tapestry look. Last Unicorn/EQ would make for a great crossover.
-
Wow! Thanks! And also I'm really surprised that you know the movie! Usually I find that it is hardly known outside of Germany. It was a big hit here, so everyone knows (and often loves) the movie. It is the first movie I recall seeing and I loved it soooo much, still do! I must admit though, this one of the really, really rare cases that I like the German dub better than the original version. Christopher Lee did the voice of Haggard in English and German! He rules!
Have you notices that the pointillist-tapestry look is only used in the unicorn forest? Ah, that film's animation is sadly not top notch, but there are so many small, wonderful things you can notice. I just love how lyric it is and that it has such a bitter-sweet ending. *sighs* Could go on forever about this movie!
Last Unicorn/EQ would make for a great crossover.
Woot! Bring it on!
-
I like the German dub better than the original version.
Same here! I was surprised how ... awkward I found the English dub. Well expect from Christopher Lee of course .. yeah he DOSE rock. That voice.. *sigh* I still want to struggle the idiot who said he has to make a casting for his own voice in the German LOTR dub <_< We didn't get him for Saruman :'(
However. This picture made my heart flutter :D I love this all in blue tone. and the Unicorns .. your style fit them very good!!! :)
All in all .. just love it!
-
Thank you, Windschatten! It would have been so wonderful, if Christopher Lee would have done Saruman in German as well! But maybe he just to busy nowadays.
-
In fact he wanted but found it insulting and ridiculous to go for a cast for his own voice. It seemed the guy who was responsible for the voice cast didn't know he talks German ^^'
-
What, really? What a bummer! Interesting story, I really didn't know that.
-
I don't guarentee it'S true I heard it secon handed.. but I could imagine ^^'
-
Squeeeeee!! So much love for this! It absolutely glows!! And sure, this movie was uber popular in America, at least when I was little. (When I was four I was head over heels for the butterfly, who in English sings part of "Has anybody here seen Kelly, K-E-double L-Y..." ...which is my name, so I felt special).
Also I heard a rumor they were gonna making a live-action version of Last Unicorn, and I think using some of the (English) voice actors as live actors... only in older parts. Like, Mia Farrow as Molly Grue, etc (but still Christopher Lee as Haggard!). I even saw an official webpage for it once, but that was something like 4 years ago. Maybe they abandoned the idea. Cry.
But your picture is absolutely stunnning, and I can't believe you did that on the inside of a card! Beautiful!
-
Haha, cool! Thank you! It's actually quite nice to hear what other people think about this movie.
"Has anybody here seen Kelly, K-E-double L-Y..." ...which is my name, so I felt special).
Aww, I would have felt special, tool. How cute! I really liked that butterfly as a kid, but nowadays I'm slightly ambiguous about it, because I'm not sure how the humor and the anachronism really fit in with the rest of the movie. But on the other hand it's part of what makes it so special. So I guess I like it. :D
Concerning the live-action movie, I was following that excitedly. But they sadly scrapped the project a couple of years ago...
and I can't believe you did that on the inside of a card!
Neither can I, believe me... It was hell! I was cursing like a sailor all the time. That paper was cruel, I tell you, cruel! Actually I tried to erase the bend in the middle that is still visible in the original scan. I even colored the envelope of the card. That paper was much nicer on my nerves:

Of course I added the names of the couple in the end.
-
So so so beautiful...makes me wish they sold stationary with your art on it. :)
-
I just love it! it makes me think something magical or maybe... GASP even an ELF! might be about to step out of the fantastical light! I'd love to see some more of your style! oh.. and anything purple makes me happy!
-
Whee! Thank you. I would enjoy making stationary, if they'd only let me. ;)
oh.. and anything purple makes me happy!
You see, I knew that. ;D

Found some more things I might post here. These are illustrations that I've done for a publishing company that focuses on erotic novels for women. My friend writes for that company and suggested that I could do some illustrations. The publisher accepted and so I am still doing some stuff for them.
These two are for the first two books, that both take place in Tokyo and are loosely tied together. The good thing for me: the publisher wants exactly the kind of cliché kitsch that I can do! ^___^

I really love your use of color! It's so sweet and intimate and just makes you feel nice when you look at it. Very peaceful and serene <3
-
Oh yes, this was one of the three pictures I drew last year. Again for my good Last-Unicorn-loving friend. Again this was drawn directly on a post card. This card was actually meant for water colors.

My scanner was broken at that time, so I could only take a photo...

So, I now have the chance to show my latest mermaid here. This will again be published in an erotic novel, this time the story will have a rather strong comedic tendency. I haven't read it myself yet (because it's not finished), but I loved the chance to draw a mermaid as I have always loved to draw them. Acutally, my first design was intirely different and sadly didn't fit the story at all. I still want to finish my first idea and maybe show it here, too.

-
Ohhh love her! Do you do mermaids often?
-
Ohhh, she's gorgeous. Very very pretty :3
-
Oooh, thank you guys! Well, I used to draw mermaids a lot! I mean my first self-made elf tribe was mermaids and mermen. It's cool because you don't have to draw legs. Hihi!
-
I make and sell a lot of mermaid art, and eventually started a mermaid artist site called mermaidartists.com if you are still creating mermaids often, if you ever happen to want pop by and share your mermaid pieces!
-
That site has some gorgeous art! Thanks for the link! But sadly the mermaids I have are all too old to really show them to the public. For more current art I only have this one and the old/new contest EQ mermaid...
Hm, somehow I have missed your mermaids... *goes to check*

So I have finished drawing illustrations for a three-part vampire novel. So I figured that I'll post them here as well. The first one just was to be the cliché vampire picture with a slight gothic tendency. The second novel was more about the main vampire's back story which happened during the Thirty Years' War. So his clothes there are actually at least in part historically correct. :D This one is also my personal favorite of the three. I think the composition came out nice. The last one is, well, basically Winnowill... ::) But she was really described this way. So another vampire story that origin lies, in the end, in Egypt. Had fun drawing her headgear, though.

ohh those are all very lovely! I love the faces especially on the first one!
-
I love the headdress of the last one and her hair is beautiful :3 The first one is very lovely as well, especially their faces as Faerydae said. And the second one's got awesome clothes :D
-
Thanks guys! Feedback on my non-EQ stuff is especially sweet!

Am still considering if I really want to post it, because it's kind of embarrassing. Some time ago my sister uploaded a comic she and I made way back in 1997. We used to collaborate a lot, because she is a passionate writer and I always loved to draw and we both like Elfquest (she introduced me to it). So she wrote and I drew. In this case I guess the writing is much better than the art... and it's sadly only in German. Anyway, it is the last part of a trilogy about a tribe of plane-dwelling elves. This one is actually the earliest time line wise. My sister and I were talking about the trial of head, hand and heart and decided to make our own version of it. So in this case the tribe is searching for their new leader by using a similar challenge.

Even when I finished it back in 97 I found that I had used way too many browns... It really hasn't got a lot of contrast and I'd rather not start on anatomy, perspective and things like that... But there are things that I like. The flow of the panels isn't bad methinks and also just expression and emotion-wise there are some things that I can still look at and be satisfied. And I was able to draw at a small scale at that time! When did start to loose that skill I wonder? And even more amazing: I actually got a comic done! My drawing was much more efficient. So future plan: learn to draw smaller, be more efficient.
-
Thank you for sharing! You did a great job on crowds and mood and emotions in your comic for sure! You could also really see the thought in the lighting. I loved how detailed the curly hair was and her lips as well - lots of emotion there! It's so satisfying to see finished products :D
-
*mega blush* Gosh... thanks so much! Thanks for taking the time to read. In a way I guess a part of my embarrassed self was hoping people might ignore the tiny link. Yeah, but it's good to put out there just to show that I did comics once and I actually managed to finish things. :D
-
Treefox! i've always admired your art! But now i'm literally speechless the mermaid on the last page is beautiful! i love her ears and her scales!! Its sooo pretty!!!! AH! Keep up the great work! :D
-
That is very flattering! Yeah, mermaids are good to me. Try it out! They are fun to draw. No gravity, no legs!
-
The last one of the vampire stash reminds me a lot of how I view Akasha, the vampire queen from the vampire chronicles. (Actually the only vampire series I halfway cared about. Book one was blah, second was good, third awesome, never finished the fourth...)
Anyway, I love the way you handle colors. It is so alive and pretty. :D
I can't read German, despite having worked in Munich for a short period in 2009. I do recognize some words, and others are so close that I can understand it. I think I get the main message. I do agree that there is perhaps a little too much brown certain places, but I think it is alright. The creatures they're domesticating are really colorful and pretty.
Looking forward to seeing the finished calendar pics! :D
-
This comment has made my day (which was horrible so far)! Thank you! Thanks for taking the time to look at the comic. Yeah, those "Peekhooves" were quite a neat design, I think. Some color finally! I guess I did watch too many Tim Burton movies back then, though...
So, you worked in Munich? Wow! As I am from Northern Germany I don't know Munich very well, but from the few times I have been there at least I gather it is very beautiful and expensive. I hoped you enjoyed your time there.
-
Aw, I'm sorry your day was bad. Can I cheer you up with Chandeen's version of In Power We Entrust the Love Advocated?Chandeen - In Power We Entrust the Love Advocated] Chandeen - In Power We Entrust the Love Advocated (http:// Of course, as good at it is, it cannot beat the original Brendan Perry - In Power We Entrust The Love Advocated (from Dead Can Dance"The Hidden Treasures"). (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqDKrc0UrGI&list=FLOeFsowgm2IGYxUPjJRNLhQ&index=19&feature=plpp_video
#) but Chandeen's version is like a bath to take away aches.
Almost a year ago I stumbled upon my first comic, written when I was fifteen. It is so fun to find old treasures like that. For me it was a mix of emotions. First the "oh, I remember this, I was so proud," over to the "I was to artistic" with sarcasm, "I was not inspired by ElfQuest at all" with sarcasm again, "plot, where are you," to outright laughter. Not sure if yours did, but I'm sure you had fun reading it over.
As much as I like the Tim Burton movies, he shines best in The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy.
I loved Munich. (gah, it is so odd to spell it that way and not München like they do in Norwegian and German.) Little awkward sometimes, working behind the counter and not speak the language enough. Ended up with some bad German, some Norwegian, tiny bit of Italian and french, apologetic smiles and a lot of waving arms. (Actually the ones who knew English was a lot more rude than those who couldn't, come to think of it.) :lol Good times...
-
Sorry for the late reply! Really am too busy lately.
You don't want to share that comic, do you? *is not curious at all*
Glad you liked München, to keep it German;)
Hehe, I believe your comment about rudeness. Were you able to understand Southern German English? When people from Bayern speak English, I sometimes don't understand a word... Not that I would understand their German!
-
I found them rather easy to understand. Most of the people at least. One thing which I appreciated was how people tried to speak English. I've been other places where they speak okay English, but don't dare to use it. Which actually happened in Berlin when I was sixteen and very lost...
:lol Okay then, I'll have the comic up soon.

I have to say I absolutely adore this picture. :love The hues of blue give it such a sense of quietness and calmness.
And I just dig the trees!
-
Woot! I never saw that comment! Thank you! That is one of the few pictures I still like as much as when I first drew it. But I must say that the style of those trees is really taken directly from the Last Unicorn. Not my concept, sadly.
Here is another picture that I just re-discovered and still quite like. My made-up comic character Yuuki ( ::))
That bow so doesn't work. But I was aware of that when I drew it. I just wanted it to look cool. :D
-
I was going to say that I liked that you used the name for snow, with something completely opposite, when I saw the double u. Courage, isn't that what it means?
Anyway, I love how the image screams in rage.
-
Wow. O.O Amazing. The fire, her pose, her expression, the colours... :o makes for an incredible picture.
Also, I loooove the mountain. (?)
-
Courage, isn't that what it means?
Exactly!
And thanks to you both! Making her name "yuki" would have been way too original for me, I guess. Also, at the time me and my sister invented that
character, anime and stuff wasn't as popular as nowadays, so at that time there was a slight hint of originality to it.
Also, I loooove the mountain. (?)
Haha, I am also not so sure about that, either... something was-once-lava-ish-thingy...?
-
Doh. I didn't notice she has her left leg on the 'mountain.' XD I just thought she was in the middle of an pose. *Hangs head in shame.*
-
Cod, I just checked the translations, yuuki is one of those words which changes meaning if you use different tones. It didn't say which syllable or tone which said that or this, but it can either mean evoke, courage or organic. :lol
-
Haha! Ahh, the depth of the Japanese language. :D
-
It's my tragedy that my language learning ability is so painfully slow. I want to learn them all.
Tatsunootoshigo. Means bastard's son of a dragon. We call it seahorse.
-
:lol
-
I think of all these, my favorite part art the mermaid, I can't help loving sea elves :D
-
Posting this drawing from 2000, also posted this in the Scroll of Colors, but I still like it!
The story that goes with it: when I was staying in Japan, there was a challenge to draw a monster based on song titles of my favorite Japanese band. You also had to make up a story describing the monster's personality/skills.
So, here is what I came up with. The name is "Devil Lies and Truth". This monster is tiny in reality and inhabits people's ears. There it influences people's emotions by whispering either the truth or a lie about whatever in their ear. It feeds on the emotional turmoil it creates.
Guess which head tells the truth and which tells the lies. :D
(http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o161/Matschauge/EQ/non-eq/th_devilies_and_truth.jpg) (http://s120.photobucket.com/albums/o161/Matschauge/EQ/non-eq/?action=view¤t=devilies_and_truth.jpg)
-
I so want a plushie of thatone. :D
Hmm...I think the beastly green one is the one who tells the truth and the brown cute one tells lies.
The Brown makes me think of child's toy, and that would make it incredibly disturbing if it's telling gruesome lies. Beyond jarring!
Of course, that's just how my mind sees it.
Going the normal route, the brown one is the truth teller and green one is the liar.
-
;D Thank you! Yes, I'm still fond of this. Also, something different from my usual stuff.
Hmm...I think the beastly green one is the one who tells the truth and the brown cute one tells lies.
You are 100% correct! It's just more disturbing this way.
-
:jam YAY! *Celebrates*
-
Yeah, I think the green one is truth as well. Because as sad as it is, truth is often way more ugly and hurtful than the lies. Also, the green kinda blends into the brown and much more comfort looking head.
-
Ninja'ed! But I was right! :lol
-
Definitely! Yeah, lying can feel so much cuter, can't it?
