Inseparable - Techicolor
by Amberfox
Inseparable soul brothers Obelix (Robert Beasley) and Amberwing (me, what a surprise). Obelix is large and strong, Amberwing is tiny and clever. These two are lots of fun to write about and game. The black and white with background is already posted here if you want to check that out. It's been too quiet on the site, so I had to do SOMETHING! Drew this ages ago, just got around to coloring it in late March while waiting for my mother to be transferred from one ICU to another. Not to worry, something new is being worked on and should be posted very soon.

Are they inspired by (the icons) Obelix und Asterix? They look fantastic together! Especially Obelix hair!

Yea! Thank you for noticing and identifying them! Yeah, my Onkel introduced me to the series when I was visiting years ago, and I turned around and introduced them to my friends. Robert absolutely loved Obelix's character, so we had to create characters based on them. Amberwing usually wears more clothing, but these two are just having fun, hanging around. As I told Afke, Robert hated the striped pants, so they had to be a solid color. An old illo, but still fun.

Ah yes those pant … should probably burn. My grandpa collected them before he passed. Now my Mom owns them and has continued the collection (Some of them are crazy old).

I went crazy buying the hardbound copies wherever and whenever I could. At one point, I was trading Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics I could easily get here in the US for hardbound editions of Asterix and Obelix from the Netherlands by an EQ friend. I inherited the copies from my Onkel when he died some years ago. They are so much fun, and being a history buff, especially of that era, certainly helps. I also think the German translations were often funnier than the English ones.

I think most of the German translations were swiped by distant family members who got to his apartment before we could. Argh. Either way, great to know there are more fans out there of these guys, since being isolated in the US, few people have ever heard of them. I have a few of the movies as well.

Oh my favourite is “ Asterix und Kleopatra”. In Germany many people know them. I suggest to look up some cosplays of them to feel joy.

That was the one where I really noticed the difference in the translations. Nothing serious, but the meaning wasn't quite the same. Basically, the German translation had everyone commenting on her "Cute nose" where the English translation was "Pretty nose." Cute just seemed better and more appropriate. I loved that one, too!

I grew up on Asterix and Obelix, too! My older sister (the one who introduced me to Elfquest) would sometimes read the German versions to us and explain the puns - the translators did a good job of coming up with new ones for the English translation, so that they fell in the same places, but the original ones were generally funnier!
Obelix as an elf, oh, MY! Oh! What about troll versions of them? |

(Agreed, it has been quiet - I had a flurry of commissions to finish up at the end of the month, and thanks to a migraine I am now over deadline on three of them... oops. It's not too bad, though, nothing is for actual publication so deadlines are a lot squishier.)

I'm running behind myself due to depression and having to work this past weekend. Great that you had a flurry of commissions! Hope everyone was happy with the end results. Yeah, when drawing Obelix, Robert kept telling me to make his hair LONGER! FULLER! MORE! He also created a character based on Getafix, Geriatrix, and Fullyautomatix, another friend created characters on Cacophonix (we had way too much fun with that character in our roleplay games!) and Imedimentia. I'm sure the original French editions could be even funnier, but I don't recall them offhand. Mom had to translate those (Mom was a polyglot). Obelix would be easy to create as a troll, too perfect, and Asterix would be adorable as a tiny troll. He'd have to be clever to survive that society! The EQ characters were so much fun to game, brings back such fond memories!

Nice to see them in colour! Makes it even more obvious who they're based on.
![]() I obviously have the Dutch translations. One of my faves is Asterix and the Belgians. I always wondered what that one would be like in French, since that version probably is French vs Walloons, while the Dutch version is Dutch vs Flemish. Would the jokes really be the same, is the vibe between the two the same?? I haven't read the later albums yet, because the translators decided to change some names of some of the well known villagers like the chief and the bard... Really threw me off. But it's a different creative team behind it anyway. |

OMG! Asterix and Obelix inspired elves!! Ahhhh! That makes me so happy! Another person here who grew up with Asterix and Obelix. The comics were always scattered around the apartment, everyone read them, my parents as well as us kids. (And Tintin too)
These two are friggin handsome! I love how jolly they interact with each other and your interpretation of the Asterix and Obelix costumes. Soooo good! Thanks for being so creative and cheering us up despite feeling so down. @Woodbee I would be super curious what your commissions are and what they look like. Are they available to the public somewhere? And from one person suffering from migraine to another: gentle and darkened wishes: get better soon |

I post them on my Deviantart page when I have permission! I'm melukilan over there. I do a bunch of character illustrations, a few book covers, and currently a tarot deck based on characters and situations from a story-game I'm running.
