Fire and Flight remastered; p4

Let's see... changed some wording slightly, changed Adya's appearance. Not terribly happy with how the third panel turned out but it's clearer that the elves are trying to flee inside the Palace first, and the humans are entering. Last panel, knew exactly who was fleeing into the woods and adjusted their costumes accordingly. Troll got bonked and did not appreciate it, thank you.

Ah the troll adorable. The rest is just a big ol’mess for the elfs. For all it’s worth I think the panic in the air is very easy to pick up on.

Wonder why - is it Adya? - didn't morph into the elf form the others chose before confronting the human. Hm. Interesting. For some reason, the lovely dark haired male in the background has my attention. I'm guessing he didn't survive. Shame. And hey! Including a human female in the attack! All too often, women are rarely shown, so it makes it more "human" than just "human men" that are driven to violent acts due to fear. Nice ominous image with the bloody bone. But poor little troll!

The elf form Adya chose just didn't have hair! They were more attached to that bit of alien aesthetic, I guess - a lot of the others chose hats and hairstyles that mimicked the cone of their original head, but I can see some of them going, 'no, the stringy stuff on top is just too weird. Let me keep polishing my entire body like I'm used to.'
Lessee... dark haired guy, that's my version of Haken, and honestly, despite 'How Can I Keep From Singing,' I kind of doubt Haken or Gibra survived that first encounter in the reality that Cutter and Rayek occupy. 'HCIKFS' was a possibility shown by the Scroll of Colors, and the artist was trying to use the designs of elfin extras that Wendy had thrown in as illustrative examples or to fill the background. If you like him, though, you'll see quite a bit more of him in 'Once of Stars'! and he doesn't turn into a ... what he turned into in HCIKFS. The novelization of Fire and Flight mentions Strongest Man and two women - one pregnant, one with a young child - so I developed this band of early humans like an ape family. A pair of sisters, their parents and preadolescent children, and Strongest Man. Part of a larger band of interrelated families that congregates more closely when resources are easily available and disperses when they're scarce. Strongest Man's band managed to claim this spring! Great hunting, easy water! He's not going to give it up easily to weirdoes from a shiny rock! |

Very interesting interpretation. You've obviously put a lot of thought into this, it shows! Thank you so much for sharing! Honestly, I never quite understood Haken behaving like he did. Okay, maybe he was traumatized by the human attack, but that honestly still doesn't work for me. I hope he has a better outcome in your version!

Wonderful, the panic is palpable. I like that you kept the gesture of Adya trying to communicate with the humans. For some reason, that always spoke to me. And nice to read you are also basing this on the novel as well (I read that multiple times when I was younger as I LOVED all the extra information and the gogeous illustrations in the book, for which Wendy seems to have gotten much backlash back then).

Oh yeah! The ink illustrations in the novel were GORGEOUS! I don't understand what people were mad about. Wendy's spot illustrations showcase a skill with and love of ink that is just - wow.

Aw noo, poor High Ones. The second last panel really hits hard, the 3 that's laying together, one is kneeling...
(Makes more High Ones survive in my own verse) It almost looks like the orange light is visible to Strongest Man here and I love that idea. If he can see that and feel Adya Sending to him then it makes sense for him to react that violently. |
