I think computer coloring is the only way to get that opal glow from the palace.  Certainly I couldn't do it in inks or watercolor.  Minor tweaks only.  Traced, inked, recolored for my own fulfillment.

Yeah, trying to affect that opalescent glow from any other technique is tough. I'm sure one can, but I definitely didn't manage with color pencils when I first tried it. Haven't really tried it again, maybe I should. Practice, practice, practice! The humans (pre-humans? proto humans? early hominids?) in the dim shadows works perfectly o so many levels. Humans tend to have a primal fear of the dark, especially if they have to live out in the open. And these humans, possibly their entire tribe, especially appear to be very primal. Off topic, when are we going to see a full body illo of Woodbee?

Hee!  Hmmm... When I start putting up my character gallery.  Which will be after I finish inking these two other what-if covers, so this weekend, probably.  Forget MY character, I'm looking forward to drawing everyone else's!

I love how the humans are drawn here. It is a not more accurate to how they probably looked like in the past. That is something you do so well, fitting real life into elfquest.
On the topic of drawing elfs, I cant wait to see Woodbee! I’d like to one day draw all of the (active) members sELF’s here together and we can’t have you missing in that picture!

Oh yes, glowing effects are sooo much easier to do in digital coloring! Still, you did a stellar job at making the Palace absolutely otherwordly and truly shining like a jewel. Who wouldn't be afraid if that appeared in the sky? Beatiful, but incomprehensible nonetheless.
