Preypacer
by Woodbee
The mess of Two-Spear really starts here, with Preypacer's Recognition of his cousin. Preypacer and his lifemate, Softfoot, were both trappers and small-prey hunters - excellent providers, but not charismatic chief material. Moonwreath, his cousin, was charismatic, brash, talented, and lazy. And, Preypacer and Softfoot already had two children: their daughter Dove, just old enough to claim a wolf-friend, and Spear, a sullen, straightforward toddler. Spear grew up only knowing that Moonwreath and her daughter Skyfire distressed his mother, and that Moonwreath intruded upon chief-discussions as though she had a right. Eventually Softfoot and Moonwreath worked out a balance, and the truth of Skyfire's parentage came out, but Spear's opinion of his little half-sibling-half-cousin was set.
(Rather than a flock of giant raptorial dinosaurs, when I heard 'thunderfeet' I thought wooly mammoths and rhinos. Herd animals! Big feet! Bad vision! So! Rahnee, I'm sorry to say, got trampled by a stampede of wooly elephinos.)

Wait...I think I drew Moonwreath at one time and never managed to get that done in time for the calendar. I think. Damn, gonna have to look it up. Again, another really dynamic cover with so much going on it's hard to pick just one image and focus on it. So much to see! Something new shouts at you each time you look at it! Love that the wolf with Moonwreath and the cubs is leaping from the circle frame toward Preypacer, and a gorgeous wolf at that! Great work on the difficult foreshortening! You make it all look so effortless.

The idea to replace all the big lizards with ice age animals is really fricking genius! (I wonder if they die out after this or does Cutter get to see a Mammoth, maybe a giant sloth?!)

Ohhh yes, Moonwreath! It's slightly coming back to me. Great, great action shot! Perspective looks so easy when you do it... Also wonderful combo of colors again. So fitting! I like the change to Mammoths a lot! Sounds like a creature that could trample one chief or another... And that little turkey like bird in the corner is super!

You know, I thought about the Preservers in the Forbidden Grove maybe preserving a few Ice Age critters far outside their time. Open up one of the bigger lumps and oops, there's a dire beaver, or a long tooth cat, or a giant sloth!

That actually sounds plausible!

I mean, longtooth’s exist in Cutter’s time, who is to say that mammoth didn’t in Prey Pacer’s time? I think it is a shame that we barely got to know him except for the disastrous way he handled this recognition. Just such a mess that could have been avoided entirely. On art side, I do love the action shot of Moonwreath, it is very badass.
