Finally finished this Friday but didn't have access to a decent scanner. Anyway, here is the colored version of 'Ah-Ha! I Knew It!" featuring cub Songjoy hugging a beloved tree. Such a little nature boy. I am actually quite happy with the results, but that background killed me. This is a prime example of why I don't often do backgrounds. I think Songjoy is upstaged by his beloved trees, which somehow, I think he would be quite happy with.

Oh my gosh! The colors in this are mind-blowing! That depth! That shading! Wow, it looks so realistic and warm! I want to enter that picture and hug the tree next to Songjoy. This makes me look forward to Spring and some fresh greens! :) Songjoy is just the sweetest! Whether color or black and white, he's just so unbelievably cute. He looks so happy hugging that tree. :love No wonder this has taken so long... but very happy you finally got access to a scanner and got to share this with us. Thank you for this! You are making a very gray day much brighter.

The trees look like they are alive. Not that Songjoy isn't lovely but, I'm enamoured with the forest and the depth of colour and contrast you've managed to achieve.

Thank you, ladies! While this isn't as vibrant as the original, I'm still happy with it. Maybe because my scanner is okay with browns. And LOTS of browns went into this as well as greens. Yes, I think the trees are overshadowing Songjoy, but that's just fine with him. And if you notice, the tree is hugging him back (and the leaves next to Songjoy are forming a heart right back). He should've been a plantshaper, but maybe trees have empathy, too.

Ohhh! I saw the tree hugging back, I admit, I did not see the heart! This is so wonderful, Amberfox! Aw, this picture just is so sweet and it makes me long for green, for some trees to hug. So fantastic how much you put into this. The details are mind-blowing as usual... wow.

Doesn't feel like he's being upstaged to me, seems like fore- and background are in balance and cooperating with each other. They compliment each other. Songjoy's hug wouldn't be felt as much, if he wasn't surrounded by all those lovely giants.
I often don't feel like doing backgrounds, because it adds a lot of time and more work to the piece that I may not want to put into it, but when I do it always looks like a welcome addition and often uplifts it as a whole, and I feel that way about your backgrounds too. They look lovely!

I love the design of his tunic!  What a gorgeous border design. Ah, and as usual you did a beautiful job on his curls.  I think the complexity of his curls balances well with the complexity of the leaves (that must have taken forever!), and his bright pale colors keep him from being lost in the woods.  Their darkness frames him and turns him into a focal point.
I'm taking notes on how you colored the greenery underfoot.  You managed to suggest a lot with just the right application of bright green against the dark.  ...Three shades of green, one dark, one bright and yellowish, the other bright and leaning blue?

Thank you! Both the grass and trees had a LOT of different shades of their respective colors in them. The grass had about eight to ten different shades of green I used, from the very dark grease pencil green to the pastel light green of a cheap colored pencil. There was one that leaned a bit to the blue spectrum, two or three that leaned a bit to the yellow. The trees I used a literal handful of browns. I kept in mind the direction of my light source and tried to maintain the light and shadows as a result. Hope it helps!
