I really like the background in this. I assume that is a filter there, but it gives th starts a nice shimmer. I also laugh at Foxtrail's dislikes... kindness?! XD

I´ve used a screentone for the background here. I originally planned to screentone the whole comic, but since it´s as much work as coloring I´ve left that out for now.
Heh, yeah, Foxtrail is one to get suspicious over people who are kind to him. He takes it as some kind of pity and gets annoyed for not being taken seriously. He also doesn´t like to be touched, like being hugged or cuddled. Anyone he counts to his family isn´t included of course, he enjoys their touch and kindness plenty. This quirk makes kindness kind of a privilege, like he "allows" people he likes to be kind with him. xD |

How did you do the screentone? Still digitally?
It's an interesting decision, because for me at least, it automatically gives it a "print" feel -- like it's not just a digital creation, but harks back to the earlier days of comics printing. I also really like that it helps to establish a mood for the piece, since the interior doesn't have a lot of the same lighting. But by introducing your readers to the story via this page, we carry with us the impression it makes. |

Yep, everything on this comic is digital. I have a huge fable for screentones and would totally do traditional works with them as well... if it didn´t mean to sell my soul. Fortunately they work just as well digitally and are much less steep that way. I´ve used them in several of my digital works and for some I´ve even created my own digital screentones before (which is quite easy and looks so good), since the choice of background screentone scans is quite limited.
I made this introduction mostly because these are no canon characters and people out of Oakleaf Holt are not familiar with them and their story, but I still wanted that audience to be able to follow everything. I´ve seen introductions like this in most Doujinshi (japanese fan-comics) and found it makes perfect sense to tell the time, setting premises, selection of characters as well as getting the reader into the right mood for the following short-story. |
