Nightstorm and Pathmark on a morning hunt

Remember an art trade at RiverTwine Holt in the summer of last year?  :-[ Yeah, this is my submission, a year overdue.

But since I knew I was running late with it already, I wanted to give the coloring my best, to make it worth the wait. I had this vision of blue hues and a foggy background, but couldn't get it right. Yeah, didn't make it easy for myself.
Googled some morning light / dawn photos last week, and finally found one that could work well as example, 'cause it had some people on it as well -- and I wanted to know how dark I had to make Nightstorm, but still make her the focus of the picture. I think I finally succeeded!

Drawn with felt-tip pen, base colors in Photoshop, final colors with pastel pencils.

This is beautiful! Does she hear a sound, or what makes her turn around and away from the trace (or is she just scouting, making sure they are safe)? :)

Well, both I guess; hearing something because she's the scout. :) It's why I tilted her head a bit and made her squint her eye. Pathmark is the tracker.

The colors turned out so nicely. At least you keep challenging yourself, that's definitely good. Lovely outfit on Nightstorm.
Haha, I always used to give my bicycles wolf names. One of them was actually Nightstorm.

Someone over at the RTH forum challenged us to do more nightcolored pictures, because they're wolfriders, and those are supposed to be active at night. ;) I so agree, but yeah, daytime is just easier to color.

Night-colours ARE difficult... but it really turned out very good! I love the way she squints her eye; you almost add such nice realistic details that give the work that little "extra".

This somehow reminds me very much of a winter scene; almost bleak and stark with warm blues and greys as primary colors.  I think you succeeded with Nightstorm; she has shading to indicate the what is going on in the scene, but she is obviously the focus of the illo.  I also like the pose and expression on Nightstorm; definitely makes you wonder just what is it that's off screen (so to speak).  Worth the wait it took to get this done and posted!

I like how the ground changes from blue to red, makes it feel like silent early mornings, filled with anticipation... the feeling when you wait for the first sound... also, the sun shining over the trees is a nice touch! also the coloring on their clothes make them look leathery, just like it should!...
