Blacksnake - then and now
by Eregyrn
So, this is not my earliest EQ piece, but... perhaps I will get to doing that in time. Doing this makeover for my RTH char recently made me realize that it's closer in colors and some details to the first thing I designed for him back when I adopted him, a little less than 4 years ago. (I like the date symmetry on the two pieces.
) When I sat down to do the design on the left, I hadn't tried to draw an EQ elf in nearly 20 years -- and you can totally tell.
Good lord. The next piece I would do of him, in winter clothes, I was happier with. If I could make one piece disappear from his RTH gallery, it would probably be this one, ugh. Almost 4 years and about 226 elves' worth of practice later, and I feel a little more comfortable with the result. Next: perhaps I really will dig out something from 1987 and give that a try!

Well, I like both versions!
Ok, one can see, that the new Blacksnake is more skillfully done, but the face and especially the eyes are great on the left piece. Very expressive. In my opinion, drawing faces of older persons/elves is very hard. |

Ooh I agree, I really like the face in the old picture. But I also do see that you just did know a whole lot better what you were doing in the new drawing; both anatomically and coloringwise. Somehow colored pencils often feel a little flat and grainy, I see that in my old pictures too.

Both versions are definitely good! I would almost say the older one has a more realistic look to while the newer is more stylized and comic-like. But I do think that the newer shows how much more trained you are nowadays. I actually also like that you stayed faithful to this character for such a long time!

You know, looking at this picture again it seems like the one on the left shows his fierce, wolfish, intimidating-elder-hunter side a little more, while the one on the right seems (while still tough and intimidating
![]() Don't get me wrong -- I see what you mean about the difference in art. For one, the clothing wrinkles on his pants showing indications of his knees on the right, but it just looks like a softer pair of pants to me. Seems like using darker/thicker black outlines agrees with your art here, too. ![]() |
