Heya! I've been thinking about how Elfquest comics were translated, and I've been wondering what the comic, or the characters were called in your home country... I can't remember all the characters, and I didn't read every translated comic here, but here is something I remember... it has been long since I held the Finnish comics in my hands, but as soon as I found them again, I will add more... and if the name is somewhat different than the original, I will translate it's meaning for you...

Interesting how really close the German and Dutch names are.

Rillfisher - Bachfischerin / Rinnsal - Creekfisher / Rill
Wow, so her name changed? Very interesting!

Newstar - Sternchen / Neustern - Little Star / Newstar
That is actually a name change that I liked in the German version.

Suntop - Sonnenstrahl - Sunbeam (Sunray)
Sunstream - Lichtstrahl - Lightbeam (Lightray)
Aaah! I wondered how they handled that one! I mean he was basically Sunstream in German from the start.

Mender - Helfer - Helper
Echt? Helfer?
Wasn't he also called Mender the first time we shortly met him in KotBW?

Picknose - Pickelnase - Picknose
I always liked this one because of the double meaning:
Pickelnase can mean Picknose but also Pimplenose.

Old Maggoty - Ouwe Etterbuil - Old pain-in-the-neck
That is just awesome!

I'm missing the Finnish translations for my collection, Berit. Would it be okay for you when I use your informations in my thread
on EQ.com?

btw: There is an old thread on EQ.com that has Finnish translations - maybe it will help you to remember.

Rillfisher - Bachfischerin / Rinnsal - Creekfisher / Rill
Wow, so her name changed? Very interesting!
She was Bachfischerin in the Bastai issues when Treestump first tells about his loss in the Go-Back lodge. Somewhen later (don't remember exactly) she was referred to as Rinnsal - maybe in the Carlsen reprints. There were some odd translations there in the beginning.

Mender - Helfer - Helper

Echt!  :D And you are right - in the one panel when Dewshine and family decided to stay in Sorrow's End he was still Mender in the German translation - and as far as I remember mistaken as a girl  ;D

Picknose - Pickelnase - Picknose

Dittos!

@ Afke
I got "Gurgle" for Klatering - does this make sense?
Kwink (= Happy Chatter) for Wing - could there have been a name change?
Amber would be Amber - in case it refers to the honey-colored gem"stone"
Got Grijstof (= Greydust) for Greymung - another name change?
Gobbler for Guttlekraw ... really?! *imagines the big ugly bird*
"Old pain-in-the-neck" is much more fun than the literal translation I got  :evilgrin ...can I add it to my thread?

The story in which Suntop changes his name to Sunstream isn't published in the Netherlands, so I left that name out of my list.

Sadly some names haven't been very consistent in the dutch versions. Different translators I guess. Yes, Kwink has been used as well, as did Grijsstof, and Woodlock has also been called Bosloof (forestfoliage??), makes it very annoying to make these kind of lists.

Bird? Gobbler, Guzzler, Gorger are the names I get when looking up Guttlekraw's dutch name. I don't know if there are different meaning between these words. ;D His name indicates he's one to quickly take everything and leave nothing for others.

Abscess is the literal translation for old Maggoty, but when used for namecalling which it is used for more often, it becomes pain-in-the-neck, which I think is better suited.

As for Klatering; the dutch word combines multiple meanings I guess. But it mostly refers to the clearness and sounds of a brook. Gurgle doesn't seem quite right either.

Ahaha! I don't remember that, but it sounds very fitting. Especially since Wolfgang Hohlbein took over the Bastei translations, some things were not very carefully done.
And I must admit I never read the Carlsen versions.

As I cannot chance what the translators did - and don't expect to find some "absolute truth" in this gathering, I decided to make fun of these mistakes. I'm aware that others feel very different about this issue - someone I asked for help with the French names refused support because he didn't want to be remembered of the "messed up" translation. It actually seemed to hurt him.

Though - bad translation almost kept me from starting to read Elfquest. The title of the the first issue "Fire and Flight" was changed to "When the Evil Gnomes were Coming" ... much too childish for an adult in the middle of her twenties to deal with it. Thanks the High Ones the cover art was irresistable.

@ afke
My dictionay translates "gobbler" as Truthahn (=Turkey).. thus the bird reference. Thanks for the definition.
There seems hardly a proper retranslation for Klatering - none of the offered vocabulary sounds right. In fact Klatering has a sound melody that is very fitting for Clearbrook - while possible retranslations sound plump.
I'd like to add your varient names and translations to my thread. Is this okay for you?

@ Treefox
Thanks :) The German issues (Bastei and the early Carlsen releases) were all I had for a VERY long time. Must admit that I still love them - despite all the flaws.

@ Berit
Thank you! No problem with the retranslations - it's a great start. And I will go through the old thread for possible variations, too.

Is there anyone who could help with the French and Italian translations? Or Spanish ... in case there is one at all?

I think there is a Spanish translation, somewhere I've seen something like "el tribu del lobos" or something along these lines

I'd like to add that there is a lot that I like in the German translations. But sometimes it was just slightly messed up. For me, it also provided for some good laughs, especially after I finally new the English version! For me the German version was also the only thing I had for a long time.
Haha, I especially like the blank speech bubbles we sometimes had...

A Spanish version would be interesting!
I think my sister might still have a French issue... But I am not sure. Should I remember this when I go home next time, I will try to get it and list the French names as far as possible...

I googled it; there is a Spanish (Castellan) translation by "Estudio Fénix" (translator) and at least SatS was published as el Camino y la Espada. Right now, neither the translator nor the publisher lists EQ

What if you look up the verb, to gobble? I'm sure that gives you a different result, also in german. ;)

Edit: Thanks for pointing out, Berit! Somehow the scandinavian letters ä & ö had been corrupted, maybe that's why it won't show anything!

------

Hey Berit, here comes the cavalry!  ;D I paid a visit to the local library, where I found some of the volumes in finnish. I left out the ones you translated already, unless I found something new about them. I also left out the ones that weren't descriptive, because they weren't translated in the issues. I don't think I found all the characters' names (I couldn't find the first 1-3 volumes of the 1990-series, nor the volumes 1, 2, 5 and 11-21 of the 2005-series), but maybe they can be found later?

OTHER
-------

Go-Backs - Palaajat (Returners)
Madcoil - Hullukäämi/Hullukerä (both names mean the same, but the first one reminds me of an inductor (which sounds weird), while the latter has a broader meaning (and sounds better, imo.)

Here are the published volumes. Only the five first coloured volumes of the Original Quest were published in 1990. After that, it was in 2005 when they started to publish the series again in black and white (manga-format?). That's why some character's and volume's names have two different translations. I think they didn't bother to check the old ones.  :-\ Interestingly, they did decide to name the SaBM issues individually (at least I didn't find any english versions).

There are also some parts of the other books translated, because the 2005- comics started somewhat chronologically from the Blood of Ten Chiefs, instead of the Original Quest. They stitched together some pieces of the stories.
