Question about how Maturity Rating works in an Album
« on: June 16, 2010, 05:29:30 AM »

I'm sorry if this has been answered somewhere else. I'm designing a Mature album and I'm not sure how image thumbnails show up in the Full Gallery preview pages. I believe I set all of my warnings and switches on my album correctly and test-loaded an image. Yet, I still saw the image on the New Gallery page. :o I promptly took down, of course. Was I able to see because I'm the album's owner and presumably have permission, or was everyone capable of seeing it. Help?

By-the-by, what all is (and isn't permissible in a Mature album?  ???

Unfortunately there's no way to set an entire album as mature, only individual pictures. If it is set to mature, you should either see the red "m" next to the thumbnail, or a red "Mature Image" when you are in the image view page. If you have your maturity filter on, then regardless of whether it's your image or someone else's, it should show the blue "mature image" replacement image.

Now...maybe what you were trying is the Hidden Album feature...? This is a case where you'll see it on the front page, and an admin will, but no one else will.

As far as what counts as mature, the golden rule is "if Wendy has drawn it in ElfQuest, it isn't mature".

This thread has some examples of what she has done. :)

Thanks for the info, Foxeye! But it doesn't quite answer the questions I asked. To be more specific: I wasn't trying to make a hidden album. When one creates a new (sub)album, in the Privacy settings you get the choices of allowed membergroups, allowed members, password protection, and disable browsing (which I assume means a 'hidden' album.) Do any of these fields sort at all for a member's age statement (from their profile) when viewing either the individual images in a Mature album or, more importantly, seeing the thumbnails on the site's main Gallery page? For example, one of Sihreie's pix in the Main Preview has a red M next to it, yet I can see the thumbnail and click on the image. AFAIK, I'm not in any of their membergroups, haven't asked for a password, and my age statement doesn't have a year designated on it. If a Mature image is fully viewable from the main Gallery, it kinda negates the purpose of having Mature albums/pages. :) What are the steps that one goes about to make certain images are only viewed through said filters?

And my 2nd question...I get the delineation point between an average image and a Mature one, but are there any levels or imagery that is considered too graphic for even a Mature designation? Not that I'm into drawing severed heads, graphic assaults or whatnot. But I wouldn't want to cross a line that I didn't even know existed. :D

[EDIT:] I just re-read part of your post, Foxeye. Do I understand it correctly to mean that the individual user/member is responsible for their own Maturity level filter? If so, that doesn't seem terribly secure. Not sure how you'd keep the under-18 crowd from accidentally (or purposely) seeing Mature content.

No, there is no group that is determined by age.  I don't think the forums would let me do that if I wanted to...it's only post-count based, or "assigned to that group by an admin" based.

I suspect it's because you have set your day/month, even though your year is 0000. We currently only check for 0000-00-00 as an indication that age is unset.

Aye, call it despotism if you wish, but I would delete any image that depicted non-consensual sex and kiddie porn, or torture porn. It's probably possible to go too far with gore as well, though in the end, it's a call we'd have to make on a case-by-case basis.

Correct. They have to give their age, and they have to enable seeing mature images.

You can't. The filter is more about allowing people who don't want to see mature images it to turn them off, without having to altogether prohibit mature artwork. :) If folks want to lie about their age, that's out of our hands.

What Foxeye said :)

Ultimately we have absolutely no way to verify the age of the participants in this forum. Well, we could, but we'd have to start charging subscriptions like those porn sites do, which sort of defeats the purpose of a site like this.

We have a grand total of one reliable check in place for visibility of mature items: You must tell us that you *want* to see the mature content.

Beyond that there's a simple check to see whether the user has chosen to tell us their age, truthfully or not. The member is completely free to lie about their age, since we don't have any way of verifying their age. It's sort of an are-you-paying-attention test more than anything else.

For example, according to your forum profile you're at ripe age of 2010 and are ok with mature content :)

Continuing on my own train of thought, it would be relatively trivial to add a sort of a sanity check on the birthdate that assumes any birthdate more than, say, 150 years ago is bogus, but given the ease with which it's to make up your birthday I do not necessarily see the allure.
