Writers' Gallery / Shades of Smiles
« on: August 25, 2011, 08:17:32 AM »
I

Bowki does have eyes. He is only eight years old, but his eyes are sharp. He can see the different smiles and easily distinguish them. He can see other things well too, but it is the smiles he notices most. Especially those of his parents. All of them have the proud smile, the one they flash when he does something extraordinary. Like when his arrows hit their mark, and when he got to know Quicksnap. They also have the same smile when they comfort him. And then there is the smile in their eyes, the one reserved for when he does something he shouldn't and they try to be stern and fail.

Sometimes father get a distant smile. It isn't like mother's when she remembers something from when she was young.

No, it is a different sort of distant. Almost as if he is sad and tries to disguise it.

When Bowki sees that smile, he kind of wishes his eyes weren't so sharp.

II

Serrin knows what her recognized is going to say before he utters a word. The black haired female has always known this day would come. She has tried to prepare herself, but obviously failed. Because she can feel the sting of salty tears.

But what can she do? Dyrr cannot forget. He has moments when he does, well helped by their beautiful son. The flashes of peace and happiness are only temporary. So she hides her sorrow behind a smile as their foreheads touch. He is surprised by her action, by her simple understanding.

Then she follows her lifemate to the cellar where they first met.

III

Talmah doesn't have the heart to follow his lifemates down. He chooses to wait at the stairs. It is almost worse to see their backs as they slowly descend down to where the wounded sleep. But it leaves him free to let the tears roll down his cheeks.

It takes forever before his lifemate comes within his field of vision again, yet it is too soon before there is only him and her again. By then he has wiped his tears away, but she knows he had been crying. She always knows.

**I miss him too.**

IV

Wing sees his grandson run from his parents hut and swing his legs over his wolfriend, before the youth takes off. By now almost everyone knows that Dart has joined the wounded in their sleep. He hopes his friend has happy dreams, free from the horrible images left from the war. Bowki who is full of smiles and laughter doesn't know about that, he knows nothing of those terrors. Of course his grandfather wishes he will never learn.

His lifemate puts a hand on his shoulder. "Leave him."

"He could hurt himself."

"Let him howl, beloved." She squeezes his shoulder. "He is only ten. Let him grieve. Let him howl."

V

Newstar finds the cub after the moons have disappeared behind the mountains. As she expected, he sits on one of the places which isn't occupied by a body in wrapstuff. He stares at the one she knows belongs to her friend.

She sits down beside him. He makes no move or sound to either acknowledge her presence. He keeps staring at his father's wrapped up body in complete silence.

"Father is wounded, isn't he?" Bowki turns her head towards her. "Like Kimo, only different."

His aunt cannot do anything but nod.

When they go upstairs, they pass the jars with the many pebbles. Bowki pauses for a moment. Then he bends down by the one where those which are reserved for the ones which doesn't mark time. He picks one up, and put it into the other one.

"Don't tell," he begs.

Newstar smiles reassuringly.

"I won't."

Lets get started

Tales of Hawaii by Jack London

I bought this book on a flea market in Tallinn. The only other book I've read of this author is White Fang, which I remembered to be draggy, at least to my twelve year old mind. This book was anything but that. With an elegant collection of five short stories, set on Hawaii, he describes the people living there and the fear which rides the waves beating the shore.

The Sandman Book of Dreams Edited by Neil Gaiman and Ed Kramer

I was a little tentative about reading this book, which is an anthology set in Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. My worries were unjust. These authors have all wove great stories, many which are good enough to fit into canon. A must read for every lover of the Sandman series. I recommend you to have read the graphic novels first, but you don't need them to follow.

I don't know what type of artist I am... because I'm just starting to draw properly :P Must confess that I loathe inking though, even if I sometimes work with pen. http://ofelas.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d3kg6ej

Zombie elves are why Foxeye and I have volunteered our services to help with anatomy and other artistic problems anyone may be having.   ;D  We are both on the judging crew (if indeed there will need to be any judging), so it doesn't ruin any surprise sharing your sketches with us.

Hehe, the problem was that I started with the hat, because it is so huge. Then when I drew the face the mouth turned more like stitches. A art teacher told me once that if you get frustrated or can't make it properly, then you should turn it into something else. So now I have a Minyah shaped purple hat with a brown skinned face, green eyes, and stitch mouth. And it flies.

Maybe I should post it...

Name: Lilac

Birth-tribe: Unknown, possibly of Go-Back heritage

Parents: Unknown

Age: 51

Appearance: Pale skin. His height is the same as the Go-Backs, which makes him being mistaken for a child when he is in the human settlements. Brown hair with bangs sticking down to his eyes, rarely longer than to his shoulders. Slightly curly in wet weather.

Attire: As a child he used to wear red pants which went to under his knees, with yellow decorations at the bottom. As an adult, he usually wears long sleeved shirts. He usually wears dark colors, like black, blue and brown, due to a lot of hunting during the night.

Role: Elf-slayer

Skills: Weapon wielding and tracking

Personality: A very arrogant elf, sure to boast his skills to anyone within the hearing range. Twenty years of preforming his grim profession has earned him a good night vision and is an excellent tracker. He is quick to anger and looks down upon those around him. Yet he cares deeply over bond beasts.

Background: Lilac keeps his own counsel regarding his own past. What is known is that the group he lived in was always on fairly friendly terms with humans. He did not take up his elf killing before he was thirty years old, in exchange of cider humans make. Prefers the one made of pears over apples, but will take what he gets.

Name: Ekah (Stone's Light)

Birth-tribe: Sun Villager

Parents: Moonshade and Ahnshen

Age: 534, born a year after Ember and Suntop (Final Quest age)

Appearance: Slim, rather bony body with small breasts. Her skin tends to be a little darker than Ember, since she spends a lot of time in the sun. She inherited her father's golden eyes. Braids her hair after Sun Folk tradition.

Attire: Ekah stuck mostly to green and light gray while living with the Wolfriders at Thorny Mountain. In the short period she lived in Sun Village as an adult, she used orange and blue, with various scarves to protect against dust. She saved the other colors as night duds. Currently being on Venka's Quest, she is wearing brown with pink undershirt.

Special possessions: She always keeps a pendant she stole from a troll in the Troll/Elf war.

Role: Mainly a hunter, but being the daughter of Moonshade has given her a dair knowledge of tanning and helps when there is much to do. (Will be further updated when we know more of Venka's group)

Skills:  A good tracker, she is a very capable hunter.

Weapon: She is skilled with the sling shot. Average spear. Mediocre archer and clumsy swordwielder.

Personality: Ekah is usually a friendly spirit who goes along with mostly anyone. A misunderstanding between herself and Strongbow, interpreting his comments of Wolfrider supremacy as demeaning and passive aggressive insults against her. Interpreting this as criticism has made her very defensive whenever she thinks someone is coming with criticism, and this does cause tensions, as other elves think this means she doesn't trust them enough.

Background: Ekah was born to Ahnshen and Moonshade a year after Ember and Suntop. She spent her years being very carefree and loving her life in the village. When Savah's spirit was captured, she was not very keen on leaving her father and the village. But it was not after Dart said he was going to stay that she considered that she could refuse. But upon looking at Strongbow's face she grew too frightened to say anything, and has since that felt scared of him.

When the Gliders kidnapped everyone, she bolted right away, and ended up in together with was with them, and wasn't introduced to them before that. Had a lot of fun investigating the air tunnels. The other big thing that happened in her young life was in the troll/elf war. She got along with the Go-Back children, though she found them a bit serious. When the trolls attacked the lodge, she attacked back with ruthless energy. At one point she picked off a pendant she found at a dead troll, and has kept ever since, either at her side or around her neck.

After the troll/elf war, nothing big happened in her life, before Rayek took them all to the Sun Village, and was picked to go to Thorny Mountain. This time she put a big fit, not wanting to go at ALL. She was forced to go though, and once again barely managed to not get kidnapped. This is also when her conflict with Strongbow escalated, as she slowly started turning her response from fear to anger. Despite this, she grew up mostly being a bigger sister for both Tyleet and Venka.

After the Palace came back, she went to the Sun Village, staying there until the humans got back. After that she went with Venka. Was told about Chitter in sending by Sunstream, and is excited to see her little sister.

Name: Cone (Nicknamed Moodkiller)

Gender: Female

Birth-tribe: Wolfriders (Skyfire's time)

Parents: Sprig and Nightdancer

Age: 28, born in 3419.

Appearance: Grey eyes, with brown shaggy hair. Wears it in a ponytail to keep it away from her face. Ironically, it usually falls out, giving her a bit unkept look. Oval faceshape. Little on the tall side for a full wolfrider. Strong runner, as she hasn't had a wolfriend in a few years. A few scars on her shoulder, usually hidden by her clothing.

Attire: Summer: Long sleeved green shirt. Fur vest on top of it when temperatures drop in the summer. Buckskin trousers. Winter: Fur jacket of sorts, wears her trousers down into her boots. Gloves with open fingers, would prefer full ones but it hinders her archery, and taking big mittens on and off is too time consuming.

Weapons: Bow is her forte, but carries a knife made of flint, in case she needs to cut strips of meat or finish a job.

Role: Huntress

Skills: Average at sending. Skilled archer and a good runner.

Personality: Used to be a fairly cheerful elf, rather curious of life. Little on the slow side in wits, she rarely told either the High Ones or the ones arguing against them off, despite thinking both could be rather ridiculous.

After the death of a wolfriend she was quite heartbroken. Grieving quite longer than what most Wolfriders do after loss of a wolfriend, she turned snappish and was often in a silent, yet grumbling mood. She often takes this out on others, and feels pleasure when she ruins other's days. Thus, she has been nicknamed Moodkiller behind her back.

Background: Cone was the second child between Sprig and Nightdancer. Was a curious child, always exploring the trees and heights when she had done the useful things. Thus, she was named Cone. Didn't bond with a wolfriend before she was ten summers old. He was low ranking wolf called Rill. Both of them usually found the chase a lot more fun than the actual catch.

When Cone was twenty five, her wolfriend stepped into a rabbit hole during a hunt, and fell. The fall surprised the rider, throwing his rider off. Rill broke his leg and neck. Cone merely scraped her shoulder. Taking the pelt was a tradition even then, and she did so. Proved to not be so smart. Her den smelled like her deceased but dear friend. She tried to launch her grief into hunting, but without a wolfriend, she often had to either ride behind another, or run. Of course, Cone grew stronger and a better runner, but still, everywhere she went, something reminded her of her friend.

Grieving longer than what was considered normal; a few grew annoyed by her depressed mood. Thus, a few verbal spars happened between her and others.  Her mood grew sour, taking out resentment and unfairness out on others. She even took great pleasure when it worked, despite all it has ended with was verbal and physical spars, hurt feeling and sour moods. Has been reprimanded often by her mother and the chief. Has been called Moodkiller behind her back.

Name: Silverfish

Birth-tribe: Frozen Mountain Trolls, currently living with the Plainsrunners

Parents:Mushroom and Gruttlekraw

Age: 156

Appearance: Curly black hair, keeps it long and sometimes braids it.

Attire: Blueish black pants that he rolls up when he fishes. A simple brown shirt on top. Only wears shoes in winter.

Role: Fisher, gatherer and reluctant prankster

Skills: Fishing, really good at using the spear. While an adequate hunter, he prefers his prey having fins. He is pretty bad at horsemanship, and prefers to walk if possible.

Personality: A friendly guy, you can always count on him helping you no matter what troubles you. This “i will help you” personality earned him the loyalty and friendship of notable prankster, Quill. He has been described as lacking in ambition and somewhat passive. He does try to take blame when Quill's plans go awry, but the tribe has learned that he is rarely the mastermind behind.

Background: Silverfish is the offspring of Mushroom, one the many women that lived their lives in the women's quarters, and Gruttlekraw who took interest in her for a short while. His father had little interest in raising children, and would only pay attention once the sons he fathered when they were old enough to join the military. However, before that happened, The Palace War swept the troll tunnes. Mushroom was spying on how the war was turning. Having witnessed the way her own people had treated the Forest Trolls, she was terrified of what Picknose and his rebellion might do in retaliation to their oppressors children.  Gathering a few supplies, she told her son to follow the river. She would come and pick him up once it was safe. That was unfortunately the last time they saw each other.

Silverfish followed the river until he reached the end of the tunnel.  It was there that he met the Plainsrunners, a nomadic elf tribe . When it became clear that his mother was not going to come pick him up, they took him in, despite some disagreement internally. He quickly befriended Quill, and the two have been best friends ever since.

Silverfish has sometimes expressed desire to go up the tunnel that he came out of to find out what happened to his mother. So far he has just left it to talking.

Silverfish has a notch on his left ear, from a longtooth during a hunt that went badly.

Anyone who can help?

True.  :-\

Then again, I rather liked the interpretation of Tales of the Snow Beast and At the Oak's Root.

Agreed. Tale of the Snowbeast is one of the few stories I felt was given proper justice. At the Oak's Root was one I never finished reading, since I was moving while reading that book and had to deliver it to my friend, who has them all.

To not be completely off-topic, I haven't even started mine yet...not that I'm not thinking about the compositions, they are just in the planning phase.  :)

Tentatively I'd say Willlwgreen from the Two-Spear and Kahvi series *is* supposed to be canon, but...I'm with you that I really like the Ties that Bind version so much more.

I would say (as you do) that the non-Wendy renditions are often so vague in their characterization (and outright wrong at times), that I think you have room for interpretation in her body-language/personality/facial-features. Opinions Windrider?

(Why oh why didn't The Ties that Bind make it into the BoTC comic adaptations?! Or In Memory Green? THe latter was SUCH a touching story of the high ones and their first generation that I cry a little inside whenever I remember that How Shall I Keep From Singing made it non-canon. Richard wrote a beautiful story.)

(There's an amazing story about the high ones and their first generation, written by Richard himself no less, that is made non-canon by the "How Shall I Keep From Singing?" two-parter. THat is one of the saddest "casualties", imho, even though the characters from HSIKFS are very pretty people. :) )

Considering what they did to the story called Summer Tag and Colors, I'm rather glad they didn't adapt those stories into the comics. But then again, I say that the stories in the anthologies can beat the canon stories any day.

That being said, I fell in love with Willowgreen in the Kahvi comics, but any portrayal is good to me!

Here is one of my ongoing chaptered stories, which is a role reversion and a sort of worldpool tale. It was beta-read by faeriegirl on Scroll of Colors.

Chapter 1

There was this terrible scent lingering in the air, a scent no Wolfrider had encountered before. The forest had grown terribly silent everywhere around them. All of them halted as they came aware of it. They sensed something there, around them. Their eyes grew wide, scanning the area which the the two moons were unable to cast their light on. There was nothing which they could see, nothing which could tell the hunting party what was so close, yet so far away from them. It is not a wolf, deer or prey. Nor was it the cruelty of the five-fingers. But there is no doubt that there is something... something which screamed wrong to their elvin senses.

All of the wolves seemed uneasy. They tensed under their riders, ready to flee. None were as uneasy as Blackfell, whose dark pelt stood straight. He growled deeply, the sound did nothing to make anyone feel safer. They all drew their weapons, their noses widen to take in the foul stench, almost tasting it on their tongues.

Still, there was no way to locate the source for neither Joyleaf, Cutter, Bearclaw, Skywise, Nightfall, Treestump, Brownberry, Foxfur, Longbranch or Rain.

Rustling leaves and a shrill hoot right beside Skywise made him gasp. An owl had taken off in flight. Cutter inched closer to his soulbrother, putting a hand protectively on his shoulder. His heart pounded loudly in his own ears, almost drowning out all sound. It was maddening for the chief to be. He wanted to see the enemy, fight it, not shiver in the wake of it.

“Shh! Starjumper,” the stargazer whispered as the wolf growled fiercely. He leaned closer to the wolf, feeling safer when he did.“It- it's just an owl!” He told himself as much as the wolf. How anything could live here and be content with life was beyond his understanding.

“Look! Over there!” Joyleaf choked. The party looked up, to find the carcass of a wolf cub. It had been slashed by a paw, most likely one of a longtooth or a similar creature judging by the look of the scar. But something wasn't right. There were no scratches which indicated that the cub had come across the ones of a the huge cats. Nor had it been slain for the sake of feeding.

It was as if... it was as if this creature had killed for pleasure!

**I hope your skills won't be needed tonight, healer.** Cutter sent to Rain, not trusting his own voice. “So do I, young Cutter so do...”

Rain was never able to finish that sentence. Something shot out from the darkness so quickly that the Wolfriders could not catch a good look on it. There was a scream and the sound of something hard connecting to flesh. The metallic smell of blood was the next which came on them and... death. They had no chance to take in the loss, the thing attacked again. Foxfur stood frozen in horror as it came towards her, it's teeth casting a light on her. They closed around her, sharp teeth meant to crush animals far larger than elves.

Claws striked blindly, hitting Skywise in the arm. Loud snaps of bones breaking and... it sent!

**A skyfire lit up the forest. High ones were here a long time ago, their pain awoken. Twisting, bending shaping. Rivalry and smoke, cat and snake bound in fight. It was Change, it was Joining, it was Pain, it was Hatred and it had a name!**

**MADCOIL!**

Filled with nausea, the ones who could still use their legs ran away from the images. They stumbled and fell, leaped forward. Soon they were in the trees, clutching the trunk like cubs held their mothers. “Mother?!” Nightfall's cry was loud, steadier than she felt. Her stomach felt like it had turned to ice once more when she discovered that her mother was not there.

Nor was her father, Longbranch. His name rang through the forest too, cried out by his brother One-Eye

“Bearclaw!” Joyleaf and Cutter yelled in unison as Skywise called out Foxfur's name.

As her mind gradually became clearer, Joyleaf remembered to send.

**Grenn!**

There was no answer. She stood still in the tree, silent. **Grenn!** She tried again, her blue eyes feeling rather wet. A feeling of dread stronger than the one she had just encountered filled her. Never had he been so... so silent.

**Grenn!**

**Grenn!**

**GRENN!**
