@Afke - I agree with you. I don't think that the Through the Comics theme is great for the calendar, it would be better suited for a group challenge or just something silly to do, like with the Valentines from last year. And what-if (Worldpool) is something that has never been allowed in the calendar anyway.

Seasons (but might be limiting since there are really only four)

I was thinking about this and what if seasons meant, the seasons in a character's life. Spring would be birth and cublings, Summer would be lovemates and finding your own path, Fall would be lifemates, settled down, your cubs have grown and then Winter would be face-fur, you're older and wiser also depending on the character, death. This could be represented with one character for all twelve months or many different ones.

You can of course also incorporate the actual seasons, so three Spring, three Summer, three Fall and three Winter scenes.

@Wildfire, Encounters will be added to the list.

@Amberfox, thank you for the input, your suggestions will be added to the poll for voting.  ;D

Though I'm unsure what Through the Comics is meant as..? Can anyone clarify?

That was an idea Yavia had for the 2021 calendar theme and this was the explanation:

Elfquest through the comics - Draw Elfquest figures in another comic style/art.

For example: Draw the characters (free choice) in their original environment but like Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Albert Uderzo, Hergé, Moebius or even Mangaka like Yoshitaka Amano, Rumiko Takahashi, Hayao Miyazaki or even Disney would do - oh, wait - could this be a copyright problem?

It might also be too difficult to fulfill and not loved because it's not original Elfquest Art but I absolutely love seeing Cutter with an "Asterix" nose or "Sailor Moon" Trolls  :lol

While we wait for the 2021 fan calendar I thought we could start chatting about next year's calendar. I think the two-stage deadline worked last year (earlier for some later for others), so that will stay the same but I was wondering about the theme.

Do you all want to submit ideas and vote as usual or should the theme be something that is discussed and decided by those who are participating? We also have several themes that haven't been used so we could always put those to a poll again and see what happens. I was thinking it would be nice given last year and the fact that the pandemic is still around this year that we choose a light theme for 2022 if possible. Something funny, or pretty or hopeful.

Let me know your thoughts.  ;)

I'm going to have the site version up (hopefully) by next weekend (Jan 16 or 17), the printed one, I still haven't heard anything but I think I've found someone else to help judge so I can put the calender up here and we can all see it and ooh and ahh and comment.  ;D

Happy New Year!

No, the calendar (both the site version and printed) is behind schedule. There are more than 12 entries which means judging but the judge is busy and hasn't gotten back to me yet. We'll all just have to be patient for now.

Hello!

No AceQuester, I'm sorry.

The calendar will most likely be late this year, as I haven't heard back from Mr. Pini about the printed version or judging the submissions and deciding who makes it into the calendar this year. The pandemic will likely affect things as well, which I have no control over. I know that some of the options on the Zazzle site with regards to the calendar aren't available at this time, so this year's printed version (if there is one) will most likely be more of a keepsake and less of a useful item.

@AceQuester - There won't be anything news wise with regards to the calendar until December. I'll try and release the printed version sooner so people can have it before January starts but it isn't officially live until December 31st/January 1st...as always.  ;D

I'm not sure why I seem to have similar stories to the ones that have been posted to this thread already.  :lol

I've had more than one person mistake me for my Dad's wife. I was a teen as well the couple of times this happened the only difference was I met these people in person, so they could see I was young but they still thought I was the woman of the house.

It really is embarrassing for so many reasons, especially when you actually have to tell them, no I'm his daughter and desperately want to ask what kind of adult person is married to a 17 year old. How do people make such a mistake.

Oh my gosh.

Something similar happened to me once. There was a woman and we started chatting and she kept asking me if I liked tea. I don't like hot beverages so I said no, I'm not a fan of tea, coffee, etc. But she kept asking me over and over amidst the conversation if I wanted to have tea. We should get together to have tea...come over to my place for tea.

It took a while but I realized that by tea...she didn't mean tea...she meant the things you do when you're butt naked.  :lol

Art and Elfquest / 2021 EQ Fan Art Calendar Guidelines
« on: May 13, 2020, 01:57:59 PM »
The theme for the 2021 EQ Fan Art Calendar is: LESSER-KNOWN CHARACTERS

**You may use characters from the original quest to the final quest but you must do your best not to spoil things for those who have not yet read the most recent installment of the series**

Submissions for the 2021 Calendar are being accepted:
May 30th, 2020 through September 30th, 2020

THEME

Submitted artwork should represent the theme "Lesser-Known Characters"

A secret thread will be created in order for participants to discuss which characters will be defined as lesser-known. This will most likely be based on the character's general popularity and not how many times they were seen during the course of the series.

The number of submissions required: 12

DETAILS

• If you would like to participate this year please PM me (Maggie) to let me know you will be submitting something for the 2021 calendar. Please don't give any details about your submission at this time, just let me know that you want to participate. Once your PM is received I will change your primary member group so you can access the secret fan calendar thread and also send a link to the AnonDraw room that has been set up for calendar participants.

Please copy and paste the following into the PM being sent to Maggie with all fields filled in:

Your Name:
EQFA User Name:
Artist Credit (Real or User only):
Email Address:

• Once you have your new primary member group tag please access the thread 'Fan Calendar Hideout' under the Elfquest section of the message boards. There you can give a brief description of your concept as well as a list of all the characters you plan to use and which ones are the main focus. Please be open to discussion, as it may take a bit of back and forth to keep the calendar varied and to make sure the characters being used are generally considered lesser-known.

• You will be asked to update Maggie and the rest of the participants via the secret thread in July with your progress. This will help to determine if we have enough entries for the calendar and will let everyone know if used characters are now available. If at any time you feel you cannot continue just send a message, there won’t be any hard feelings.

• Please keep in mind that you have just over 4 months to get your submission-ready. If there is no response to the request for the progress in July I will have to assume you are no longer participating and I will have no choice but to find a replacement artist. Communication is key, so please keep in touch.

• You may submit up to three entries for the calendar but before you contemplate that second or third entry you must first finish and submit one entry to Maggie.

GROUPS

• You may work in groups of two if that makes things easier for you. Please let me know who you will be working with when you sign up.

• How you work in your group is totally up to you. One of you may supply a sketch for the other to ink and colour or you may work together to complete the scene. It doesn’t matter so long as you both agree.

CONTENT

• Entries must be original artwork created specifically for the calendar. The use of photos or "borrowed" art for backgrounds is not allowed.

• Entries must not be available for the general public to view online until the okay is given for general sharing. Before then, any entries found online in any form (thumbnails, crops, etc.) will be disqualified and removed. With the exception of the AnonDraw room, which will be private for calendar participants to assist each other with their submissions. Please do not give the link to the AnonDraw room out to anyone.

• Canon Elfquest characters (of any race) only. No what-if characters (i.e., Worldpool).

• PG-13 or under.

FORMAT

**Please make sure your submissions are the correct size. Any submissions that are not 3300x2550 pixels or 11 x 8.5 inches at 300dpi will not be accepted**

• All entries should be in full color, with some type of background. No font please.

• Size: 11"x 8.5" (pictures must be landscape oriented - wider than they are tall)

• Resolution: 3300 x 2550 pixels (11" x 8.5" at 300dpi)

• File format: JPEG/PNG format only

HOW TO SUBMIT

• When you are ready please email your full-sized entry to Maggie. Please PM Maggie when you have an entry ready to be submitted.

• Entries must be received by midnight CST, September 30th, 2020.

Include the following:

• Your submission as an attachment not embedded into an email.

• Title of your submission. Titles will be included on the calendar.

CREDIT

• The artist's credit will be used for credits on the calendar/website.

PUBLISHING

• The eleven winners will be chosen by a panel of judges (if more than 11 entries are submitted).

• The finished calendar will be available for download at elfquestfanart.com. In addition, the calendar may be published and available for purchase.

I still love watching Mark Brown's Arthur (which started off as a series of books but then also became an animated series). I know it's meant for children but I've always loved the characters and the little bit of added content made to satisfy the adult in the room.

I happened to catch an episode the other day (one I haven't seen - The Friend Who Wasn't There) that was about imaginary friends, and when Buster (my favorite character) told his classmates about his imaginary friends (Billy Snailgoat, Frumpus, Junior, Pudding Pal, Top-Eye and Xenon) I have to admit I had a bit of a laughing fit.

I also watch Arthur's Perfect Christmas every year in December.  ;D

Question: Have you ever met a celebrity, if so was the experience positive or negative?

@Startear I'm going to make a secret thread for calendar participants only. There we can chat about which characters we want to use etc. so we can do our best to keep the calendar varied but also get to work with the characters we'd prefer.  ;)

@Amberfox Working on getting the guidelines up as well as the secret thread for participants and the AnonDraw for participants. It shouldn't take longer than a week (max). Plus the timelimit for submissions will be a lot less than usual, so you should probably be able to get something going/finished before your time gets taken up by other things.  :)

I'm thinking of leaning toward characters that we haven't overused in previous calendars as a jumping-off point (planners not included, since everyone was used in those). I also think we could consider popularity in general and try to avoid those characters which get a lot of fan art attention.

Obviously each tribe has its leading characters and then its supporting cast. I'd like to focus on the supporting cast. For example, with the Sun Villagers I would say Leetah and Rayek are lead characters whereas Shenshen, Leetah's parents, and various other villagers are not. The Wolfriders, I would say that most of the characters from OQ are leads but there are some secondary players like Dewshine, Scouter, Rainsong, Woodlock, Wing, Newstar, and Pike. I know that some of these lesser characters get more attention in FQ but they still aren't as popular as the characters that have been the main focus of the story since the beginning. I don't think we have to go so far as to use nameless background characters just the ones that don't get as much attention as the rest.  ;D

It would probably be alright to use well-knowns in conjunction with our lesser-knowns but it would be the participant's job to make sure that the star of the submission was the lesser-known character. Kind of like Czarine's submission for the 2020 calendar. She had quite a few characters in her image but you could tell who the focus was on. Something like that would be fine but the focus has to be clear.

Maybe we can start compiling a list of each tribe's secondary players and see if we can agree on whether or not they're 2021 calendar material.

Lesser-Known Characters has won the poll so that will be our 2021 theme. I think we should discuss what's meant by lesser-known. I was thinking a combo of unseen/lesser-seen characters from the comics including ones that maybe haven't been given any or much love in the calendars over the past several years.

Obviously characters like Cutter, Skywise, Leetah, Rayek, and the popular couples Redlance/Nightwood and Strongbow/Moonshade wouldn't be eligible. They're quite well-represented fan art-wise as I'm sure you all know. I would also like to represent all the tribes this year (if possible).

So let's have a bit of a back and forth about this topic so I can include any pertinent information in the rules and guidelines.

Lastly Kimo is taken, so no need to discuss him at all.  ;D

Hello Heidi and welcome to the group.  :)

Happy to have someone new wanting to participate in the fan calendar.  ;D The guidelines will go up sometime next week, the poll ended today and Lesser Knows is the top pick. I still need to get the rules/guidelines in place before anyone gets started on their submissions. So watch this space for updates.  ;)

@Tah-Marien - That's what the thread is for, chatting about ideas.  ;)

Also, the poll is up! You have 7 days to choose 1 theme from the list. The rules/guidelines for the 2021 calendar will be posted once the poll is over.

@Yavia, the calendar format will be as it is always...landscape-oriented. We've already done a comic style calendar in 2013 (Every Picture Tells a Story) but that was when I was able to get a calendar that was portrait-oriented. That is not an option so a comic book style format wouldn't be great for a future calendar.  Plus we've already done it, so doing it again probably won't happen.

Please don't get stressed, the calendar will have the same core group of rules/instructions as it has always had. There will just be a few new elements (like AnonDraw and a dedicated section on the boards for participants).  ;)

@Yavia - No, AnonDraw will be set up for those who need some assistance/critique. It's just a way for those people participating in the calendar to view each other's work without anyone else seeing it. For suggestions and guidance not to make a finished piece of artwork. You/everyone participating will work on your actual submission as you always have done, not in AnonDraw. ;)

I think what I would like to do is have the participants from the last calendar take a look at Wildfire's compiled list of themes and post your top two to the thread. I'll take those responses and use them for a poll that everyone can vote in.

Oh but please skip the movie posters theme/any other theme that would infringe on copyrights. This calendar, like all the others will be printed and I don't want to have any issues with that when the time comes.

Also, I'm happy to start up an AnonDraw page for calendar participants once we've settled on a theme and the official guidelines have been posted to the site.

We can definitely make a section for participants (only) to discuss ideas further to the ones we're chatting about now. I was also thinking maybe we could have a participants only AnonDraw (if that is possible) to work sketches and ideas as well.

I do want to keep things secret as much as possible but feel that if the participants need somewhere to discuss etc. that should be provided.

Ok, chatting about ideas here and then making a poll with the top 2 or 3 themes makes sense. We'll go with that and then those who signup for the calendar can fine tune the theme together.
