Happy Easter, Woskreszenie, vrolijk pasen or whatever you celebrate these days.
I hope you all have a calm time and some nice spring weather for a little walk outsides!

Ah, somebody is talking about computer problems. Me is awake! :)

So good to hear it's still happening, even though a paper calendar isn't really doing it for me at the end of March.
On the other hand: Looking at it not as a calendar but rather an arts object, things are different. So I could simply consider it as a couple of art prints for my EQ collection.

Backups are always a good idea, indeed. And sometimes, once you put a lot of work into something, it is good to put a copy at least of that very file somewhere else.
(I had my share of losses throughout time, dating back to the i486 days. Software error, hardware failures, or even my own stupidity.)

What strikes me is this "happened to me more than once". If it was on the same machine this might be a hint of a systematic error. Multiple reasons are possible, but worth to be checked, so you can decrease the number of events in the future. But I'd need more input on that matter to be of help.

Chit-Chat / ElfQuest next crowdfunding project (2021)
« on: March 12, 2021, 08:31:09 AM »
I nearly missed it since I think it was only announced via IG, and I very rarealy check these "social" media platforms. It was rather blind luck.
There is a project to fund an "audio movie" (audio drama, in German likely "Hörbuch") with different voice actors and music. I do not know how far any imagery will be involved.
There is an announcement video (I downloaded it an ffwd. it to check for a specific info but didn't have the time to listen to it in full) on http://www.elfquest.com/audio-movie
(checking the link, the news announcement is now finally also on eq.com)

I already sent an email to an enterprise behind the crowd funding and got informed that images of the announced miniatures are going to be revealed in a not too far future. Moreover, it seems that,
starting with April (?), there will be a crowdfunding with more backer options for every level of purse.
Along with audio-movie and tin? resin? PLA? figures there is an option for a poster with new art and I think some early bird supporter basecap.
The funding seems to run via gumroad.

could this be a copyright problem?

I guess not really. Iirc. only few "shapes" are protected, like "design patents".

It might also be too difficult to fulfill and not loved because it's not original Elfquest Art but I absolutely love seeing Cutter with an "Asterix" nose or "Sailor Moon" Trolls  :lol

I think in the early new blood series there were several artists with their very own styles, and some "crossovers". Also worldpool. And there was that violent teddybear one...
Even FinalQuest somehow differs from the rest by art style.

like the funny scetches Wendy did years ago (and made the famous mistake to give Clearbrook 5 fingers :P)

Is there an online version of that?

On landscapes. I like landscapes, but I do photography. It would be a change from the usual characters in arts, yes. But I also see AceQuester's point. Of course, one could also put elves (or trolls) in front of the landscape.

(Will we already see the entries, even the printed version still needs time?)

Chit-Chat / Merry Christmas (2020)

I'm early but there currently is time / a chance for me.
Have a great Christmas (or whatever you celebrate) time, no matter the world is fairly crazy at the moment.
Think positive and stay "negative".
And hopefully 2021 will be better, and full of elves and creativity.

I thought there was a "hidden thread" supposed to be for the official participants.
The topic is interesting, but I was uncertain if I could join, nah, better to say I was certain I'd be very stressed this year due to my job. And yes...
But maybe otheres are just working silently and possibly exchanging in the hidden thread that was iirc meant to discuss character choices, overlaps and what makes a rare character.

That made me think a lot.
Not being assertive enough so often in my past?
I guess that might be something. I do have a bunch of regrets for here and there, but I know that I (sadly) can't turn the wheel of time back - so I try to live with the situation and proceed forwards. I still do have my regrets.

And sometimes I wonder if I should have taken more action, been more active. Often one is more clever afterwards and in hindsight, but usually you'll never really know if option B or C would have been better or worse.

> celebrities
Would probably need to define what is a celebrity.
Stars from film and pop-music: Never really met.
From the ones you might know: Yes, Brandon McKinney. He was nice. Met him at a local book fair, by now quite long ago, 2002 maybe.
Look at my avatar and you know whom he drew for me. :)
From the ones probably nobody knows around here: Yes, partially. Once a professor who is a luminary on his area. Was a good meeting. Then a short visit of a NP winner, but most people were too much in awe to talk to him. I think he was nice, but we just exchanged a few words.
And been close to some bands in concerts which I liked.

> Hayao Miyazaki
The one? The Ghibli one?

> cooking
I like cooking. I just wish I had more time for it.
Well, somehow I do this... kind-of as a profession.

> What is your favorite book, and why? Also, how are you guys doing in these Corona times?
Feels like I am working way too much. Spare time is canceled, but you still gotta work.
On the other hand, better have a job these times than none.
Corona sucks, I hate the virus, not the measures.
I like many books, fantasy novels as well as scientific text books. Need more time to read them. I don't have one that I could pick and say it's my absolute favourite. Though there might be some which stand out more.
This might even change with aging, some don't. ;)

> What do you feel people should be more aware of?
Environmental aspects. Surveillance. Corruption throughout politics, no matter in which part of the world.

> If you couldn't do (job/school) what you do now (for whatever reason), what would you do instead?
Rambling around aimlessly?
I don't know. Probably I'd have to try to discover other abilities and qualifications?
Well, teaching, maybe.

>  Would you rather be stranded on a deserted island alone or with a person you don’t like?
Alone, please.

> And my question, if you suddenly had the power that your next drawing would become real, what would you draw? (can be a character or item, anything, really!)
Uh, oh.
Meta-wish: I'd draw that I can draw more of these things. ;)
Maybe myself in a position where I could actually improve the world?

> Question: If you could have 3 wishes granted, what would they be?
First: Meta-wish that I had more wishes. :P
And partially the same what Berit wrote.

Well, the questions are often fairly easy to answer, but putting up a new question seems hard for me.
Uh, well, I hope we didn't have something like that already.

Imagine you had the chance to talk to the Pinis and ask one or two questions, or utter a plea. What would it be?

Kimo is overrepresented. :p ;)

I guess most characters where people have names present at their tongue could be ruled out then.

What means "unseen" characters? That would be either an entirely fictional char. or the very very rare occurence of a character that is only talked about (yet) but not seen. Like the grand-grandchildren of some tribe or aaaaancient ancestors.

Lesser-seen would be easier since we probably could spot some elf/human/troll/preserver/wolf/whatever that occurs in only one or two panels and maybe doesn't even have a name. At least two elven characters would already be on my mind, one from original quest and one from FQ.

Hello and welcome, Heidi.
I won't spoil anything but currently one choice seems to be running away. But we'll see in the end.

Most topics seem okay to me, though I would have ideas for one which sadly currently isn't in top position.
But I wonder if I'll have the time at all to participate, workload at the job is high and there's zero downtime due to a certain virus. (On the other hand I might be happy to still have a job that fairly fits my qualifications.) Well, time will show. But good to see more people around here in general.

Yes, will there be a poll or something? This already is an impressive lot of possible topics.
On the other hand, I do not have spare time, no matter any crisis, there is no meeting with friends besides telecommunication solutions, but 120% workload at the job. Neat, isn't it? But in any way, the sooner something is chosen, the sooner people could start. (For my side I know I very likely wouldn't make it in short runs of 3 months to finish.)

That climate catastrophy is just a nasty thing. But I remember having read about CO2 and the likes many years ago, already. I do witness the changes. In my childhood there were winters when I saw ice-flowers on the windows (okay, less good windows back then, too), but we had winters with -18 °C here. There was always snow somehow. "Mountainish" regions had snow til March, occasionally even til late April.
This year there was hardly any lasting snow in the higher regions and near none in the flat lands.
I envy the Scandinavians (Norway, Sweden, Suomi) who still have some snow at all.

I could post a similar set of images like I did 2016 here. Weather becomes more and more extreme. I hate people who tell me "yeah, but it's getting nice and warm". I hate summers which are just screaming hot. Moreover, it is not that the temperature make plants grow (and thus react CO2 to sugars and materials), it also needs light irradiation, fertile grounds and water. And water? There is drought for weeks and it all starves to brown. Then, all of a sudden the missing rain of those weeks comes down in one day and washes away the soil and makes damages...

Oh well. But this thread is also to show one's surroundings. Maybe I'll find the time to get some pictures posted here.

Got mine yesterday and I also was a little surprised about the size, well, this is especially if you're used to the old ones. This format might fit well for the portrait aspect ratio, but not really for landscape - on the other hand there is also the very calendar part that needs space.
I also use them more to look at (I don't mark anything in them), more as an arts object than a real calendar for daily use.

So let's see what's in...

> Afke
> Q: Who do you consider closest to you? Friend, relative, partner... And what is it that made you bond that way?

Phew. Hard to say. I might be a bit careful when it comes to bondings. I do have a lot of friends, and a family (at least the part that is still alive). But who is closest? Not entirely sure. But I guess it might still be my mom.

> Berit
> Q: What is the worst smell you know?

Well, I have witnessed a lot of smells. Soft scent of things but also unbearable stench.

some solvents, plain hydrocarbons: not overly strong usually, but not really pleasant either
Amines: fairly strong sometimes, quite biting (ammonia as base compound, old toilets, urea decomposition, you know) (some compounds can be a lot nastier, e.g. putrescine / cadaverine)
Bromine: bromos (greek, "the stench"), well, it's a pure halogen, so it's stinging your nose, obviously
Stannyles: subtle smell, but invoking nausea (can't find something equivalent, but believe me you wouldn't like it. It's subtle, but still nasty.)
CS2 / H2S / Me2S / Me2SH: straight-forward offensive stench ("fart" and rotten eggs or pea soup left to stand 14 days in sunshine in a closed vessel, then opened)
R2PH: often with a sharp stench, rarely pleasant (people say it reminds them of garlic, but while garlic is kind of pleasant, this isn't, and the compounds are chemically different from anything garlic)
rotting (aerobic) sewage sludge: whoa, that stuff isn't artificial at all, thus it reminds you of things that you definitely should keep away from
R2Se / RSeH: nearly always unbearable stench, instantly hitting you
H2N-para-Ph-COOEt (Benzocaine): a fist right into the nerves of your nose, I think my nose hurt and I couldn't smell for an hour
I heard that TeH2 might be very nasty, too, but I haven't witnessed it. Yet. ;)
Also some things like smoking HCl, Cl2 and the likes will just sting and corrode your mucosas.

But I don't really have "psychological bonds" towards these smells so it is usually just plain displeasant.

> Maggie
> Q: Are you inspired by other artists (you may consider better than yourself), or is looking at others work more likely to make you uninspired?

Again, hard to answer. If you compare yourself to the bests you might demotivate yourself a lot. (Or strive to get like them. Probably depends.)
But I do like to look at arts, thus I am definitely looking at other people's work. And of course I also do relate this now to other areas, music, science and so on.
Of course everyone is somehow inspired, influenced by others. You grow up by imitating your parents, idols, whatever.
So yes, I am most likely inspired by other people's art.
At calendard picture time I sometimes just look at random art and try to figure out how they technically did things. E.g. that sometimes light reflexes are actually just plain white spots.

> Tah-Marien
> Q: What is your most memorial EQ moment...

There are a lot of moments that were interesting, impressive. Nothing life-changing maybe, or something that would work as a kind of verdict to apply to my own life.
But then, when I started reading it I might have seen it with different eyes that today.

> afke
> New Year's resolutions
> Q: ... is there something you'd like to change in your life this year, something new you might like to try or learn? Do you also have an idea how to achieve this?

Probably a lot. :)
But there's wanting it, then taking the right steps and actually achieving it. Three different things.

It's a bit hard for me since I often feel like I am a little nutshell in the ocean of life. You know. Not the hammer. Not even the anvil. Rather the thing in-between that gets hammered.
I'd like to be in charge of my own life, but this is something you can hardly achieve in a western society.

For the simpler things: Maybe get into a relation, more spare time (means cutting out more things, dropping time-wasters) and energy to be creative and have time for my own self, do (even) more sports (already succeeded so far). But there is the burden of my specification, my qualification in science that usually leads to mediocrely paid jobs with high demand in time and nerves.
Oh, and get better in using several programs (darktable, inkscape, blender, /bin/bash, ... ). Also tinkering and coding. And traveling would be nice.

> Berit
> Q:What was the moment when you felt that you loved something, not a person but something else, like wind or a season or something like that, what happened?...

There was no "moment" where "it hit me".
I love being outsides in my favourite places in nature - in the absence of human life (or at least loud, extroverted people that get on my nerves). I usually feel great. Simple as that.
Sometimes I feel the pain, though, cause I see that this is being destroyed by all those blind folks. Regardless if it is trees that get sick due to the climate catastrophy, or if it simply is platic litter in the middle of a forest.

The other thing is certain kind of music. I just feel like I lift off the ground.

> Startear
> Q: What kind of nature do you guys enjoy the most? The coast, the forest or somewhere else?

Easy and uneasy to answer at the same time.
Forest. Ponds. Lakes. Coast. Rocks and mountains. Trees, plants, mushroom. Animals. Weatherscapes. Snow. Mild spring weather. All of it.
Plus: I like sciences. This also is nature. When you look at the very chemistry happening, something under a microscope and you have a faint grasp of the greatness you are witnessing...

> Czarine
> Q: What are you addicted to? This can be also in a positive way.

Addiction might be a hard term, but anyway. I like things related to chocolate. I also like cheese and most yoghurts or some other milk derivatives. Well, generally a lot of foods.
I have a thing for a certain music. And nature, obviously. I used to like computer gaming but hardly find the time. P&P role playing and LARP. Not a strict addiction, but I'd not feel well without it.
Elves. Did I mention elves?

> Startear
> Q: If you could have any control in how you were to die, be it in your sleep of old age or something else, how would you? If this is too triggering, who is your favorite musician?

1. Hard to say. But what Berit wrote sounds fairly pleasant.
2. Too many to mention. ;)

> Berit
> Q: If you could suddenly eat something inedible, metal, plastic, you name it! what would you like to taste first?.

A bit weird to imagine. But yes, maybe there was something. It's a group of chemical compounds.

> Wildfire
> Q: If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be and why?

I'm doing well with kittens. Though dogs can be fun, too. Or birds. Some mice a really cute. I probably won't utter any super-exotic wishes here like ice bears, armadillos or dragons. ;) Kitteh is fine.

Question:
In lack of something else at this late hour here...
What do you think is the purpose of life?

I was already wondering why the images seemed to show what was intended (so no 404 error), but why they were blurred and watermarked also in other forums. Well... photobucket. So many things went down the drain.
I'll be receiving my own exemplar soon I guess so I can also check from close range.

Happy new year everyone. May it be a good one and bring reason and wisdom to the world and also creativity and leisure (esp. to us).

(Probably Zazzle uses some nowadays-non-sense-"IP"-violation-detection that just has a false positive. A lot of platforms where users can upload or sell things often use (have to?) mechanisms (algorithms) to check submissions for possible infringements of "intellectual property" because they can't really check every upload with human eyes for problems. Sadly these algorithms often give a false hit.)

I'll go check out the calendar images now.

My biggest mountain honestly has been the character claiming. I understand why it was set in place, but in my opinion it is done too soon. Look at the long list of claimed characters for this year, and how few actually managed to make their picture in time. When a theme is chosen the way my brain works it looks for an original idea first that makes a great match with that, and it doesn't matter what characters it involves. Then when the idea is there, and the main character is already claimed, I have to restart this process, but in a disappointed mood which kills my inspiration.

This.
Sometimes having an idea that is bearable takes a long time.
I don't have a great solution, though.

> Or the claiming can't be done until you've shown Maggie at least a decent sketch.

That sounds good basically, though at least I'd need (depending on workload) quite a lot of time and image development stretches over the year.

> Like said there are a number of places we can go, but I can understand if people don't want to sign up for some places, like Facebook; though the groups do offer a private setting so you know exactly who
> can read it.

It's not the people "hanging out" at FB or other (anti)social media (okay, sometimes it probably is the very people), it's FB/google's business politics, their severe lack of data reduction and data economy. I like this place since it offers a forum and a gallery at the same time. It doesn't come with tons of JavaScript and advertisements.
On the other hand, yes, it needs maintenance and hosting to be paid.

> On to the promoting part; we can all chip in on that, on whatever platform we are. I'm sure we can come up with a nice text that we can all copy/paste to spread the word. There is indeed not one place you
> can reach all, everyone has their fave new places to hang out nowadays.

Ah, back in the days (of glory) there were mailing lists one could subscribe to...
But yes, everyone can try to spread the word. Though it would've been easier with some central spot where people come by occasionally to gather news and information.

> I like the idea of shortening the timeline as well, because it's true; it's a long time to wait to showcase your work online, when you already finish in April.

Did anybody ever finish so soon?

> my focus tends to be better when I actually finish one project at a time.

Luxury! ;)
It would be nice to have a dedicated time for it, but I hardly ever had that yet. Thus I have to spread it over weekends and occasional holidays and some evenings. But there are also other interests or necessities competing for my attention.

I'd definitely want the calendar to continue. It's one fairly steady thing for ... roughly 20 years? It was something that brought me back to do artwork. And it is something that still show some life and connection within the EQ "community".

Quote from: Maggie
Richard and Rob who have both been instrumental in making the printed calendar happen over the years are unfortunately just too busy to continue.
However Richard said if I am willing and able to take over that part myself they would love to see the calendars keep coming. He said that the work and the imagination they display are a real treat and to
make sure he can order a couple of copies of each edition for the Warp archive! Which I thought was pretty special.

Well, the pure printing shouldn't be much of a problem. First off things end up in digital form. So someone able to make a CMYK PDF from it could create the very PDF file and that can be printed around the world. In my town you have copy/print shops "every second corner" (okay, that's exaggerated) and several real print services which all offer all sorts of megaposters, banners, textile printing, business cards and whatnot.
The thing is - how to distribute those? Hardly any of them offers this worldwide end-user business connections including a shop and handling communications and shipment + customs declaration. That were the benefits of cafepress, redbubble and the likes.

Do we have any numbers? But I guess it is more than 50 units - and in this range of numbers it's probably too much for a normal person to handle all that in their spare time.

*sigh*

Well, well, well. Or not so well.

I am certainly surprised. I thought we had a good lot of participants this year, so many characters were claimed.

I had not enlisted this year and written early that I won't be able to do some emergency fallback. For once I did lack inspiration on the topic (or read: certain characters were already claimed), but mostly I had an "elevated" workload this year. I had to get some things in life fixed, which I partially succeeded in. But I knew from the beginning that this would consume time, energy and attention.
I managed to do some other ElfQuest related project, though, but alas, that won't help the EQFA calendar project.

> old calendar sold out
Okay, but allow me a remark / question:
The last calendar print version had a late start (redbubble no longer offering calendar print on demand), it took time to find an alternative.
But how many units were made, anyway?
If we might see 100 units sold, then this is still acceptable for the late start. Guess most people see it as a fan-collector thing, not as a actual calendar to use.
(For me usually it was earliest end of January that I'd receive one from Redbubble, so the first month was already gone and "useless".)

Either way, of 100 units sold let's say roughly 10 are sold to artists who participated. But the question is: Among the 90 remaining people, will some feel this as an invitation to do art? Are they into doing art at all? Or are they just consumers? Or too shy?

Well, on to possible reasons and chances:

I can't really do anything about people dropping out.
I don't really know why the ElfQuest fandom seems to vanish. Or in general, why fewer people (all around the world, all sorts of projects) seem to have less time to engage in spare time projects. (Maybe that's just my perception, but this place is not the only one since I am involved in a lot of things.)
One reason for me still is that the scrolls of colours was closed and that subsequently fans got scattered all over the internet in smaller forums / holts / interest groups on so called "social" media.
Anyway, that's past.

Let's look at things:
We seem to have few (active) artists.
We had that situation in the past years occasionally. I remember having warned before (yeah, I wear Captain-told-you-so's uniform :P ). You always (no matter what project) have 10 to 20% of dropouts. For what reason o'ever. Doesn't matter. Always calculate with 20% dropout. And be happy if it's less in the end. :)

Countermeasures:
You can't really countermeasure dropouts. It's simply impossible.
You could mitigate afterwards by people "stepping up" and doing multi-submissions but that'll not work always and possibly exhaust some of them.

Of course higher numbers of participants would help. How to possibly achieve that?

* leave artistic freedom
* no strange topics that scare off people (yes, might attract some, but we need as much freedom as possible still)
* let character duplicates happen
If something is called "EQ favourites" then you just have to accept that of 100 people 50 will scream "Cutter! Cutter!", Skywise will follow with his fangirls with 25 voices and the rest spreads between other characters. Reduce that to 12 and you'll have like 4 Cutters, 2 Skywises, 2 Leetahs, Winnie & Rayek and Pike and maybe someone with a Go-Back. There won't be that much variation, unless a few people decide to have "obscure" (side) characters as favourites. But usually people have fav. characters that can be seen on more than 2 pages in the whole series. It's just normal.

I know it's not awesome to have less variation, but rather have 5 Cutters (pffft....) in the calendar than no calendar at all.
Well, and maybe people would also have included multiple characters.
And even just with one character alone - as we have seen - there can be a lot of variation.

more solutions:
* start early (better chances to get things done. I love to start early because I KNOW from life experience that usually "stuff" comes in-between)
* actively reaching out:
It's not enough to just announce things here.
Besides, the server acts up and people don't get email notices always.
Do NOT expect people to check by here every now and then.
Some might remember maybe during May, check by and see that character slots are already filled or something.

Reach out:
Post in holts and message boards with ElfQuest-reference.
e.g. father tree holt, some of the RPG holts, are there still fan-groups, fan-sites?

check the art platforms such as
deviantart, artstation, maybe even this pesky tumblr (it's not an arts platform, but people post art there for reasons beyond me)

so called "social" media
eq@FB, twitter, IG, whatsoever

personal and directly addressed emails

and last but not least print media:
print on the calendar's back cover, nah, better before 1st month "if you'd like to participate then check by during November at eqfa.com for the poll" (and re-print that very message on the calendar November page!)

We need these kinds of advertisements especially during November until maybe February (assuming the topic is set in early January)

> site close
Well, the eqfa calendars (weekly planners) 2012 - 2014 were reason for me to get myself started again with art. I did stuff in the past, some analog art (pencil, aquarelle), but not EQ related.
I did participate then, not always (e.g. having PhD troubles in front of me), but most years and dedicated many hours per image, many weekends and clicked myself silly with the vectors, ogled at it, corrected it, looked up photos and references to see how things should look like, how people might do it, experimented.
Well, this year, as I wrote, I knew was going to be a lot of work in many areas, but at least I had a good feeling that a lot of artists had enrolled. I know that I am still slow and won't be able to whip up something from scratch within two weeks.

So I'd kinda miss this site with all it's ElfQuest art, and the place which made me deal with artstuff again.

just my lengthy 2 cents

It does look slightly modern, a bit like American football clothes. I guess it depends on where he's staying over winter, on his (tribal) traditions and possibilities to obtain materials for clothmaking or already sewn clothes. You could stay with his classic colour scheme, though it might depend on the material: Not all materials usually come in all sorts of intense colours. And, depending on his environment, it might not always be good to wear striking colours in white snow. At least it makes you easy to spot.

I din't know her (well, not more than by the name) but it's sad to see people go "before their time". I often wondered why sometimes artits just seem to vanish. Sometimes they return, sometimes it's even a good event (childbirth, marriage, new job, big move), sometimes you never read from them again and you don't have other places where to find or contact them, and sometimes somebody else bring the sad news.
Rest in peace and run with the wolves in the ethereal plains.

They posted a preview. Colouring seems to be very similar to FQ.

How's your entry going jaRf? Vectors, I asssume?

Oh, well. No vectors. Not participating this year. (*)
;)

(*) lengthy explanation:
situation earlier this year: High workload at current job. Still no certainty about anything there.
Insecure planning for this year, needed to obtain a better job (that is closer to what I am, what I studied and researched on).
(Worked out last week by the way. :D Now I am on more than a month holiday.)

Moreover I wanted to move forward in art terms. Not accomplished, not enough time to do anything, no time to practise, no time to learn new tools and techniques.
Managed a few other EQ related things though, at least. :) And somehow... well, it was art, too.

Next point was: Topic again different from expectations, need acceptable ideas first. Was out of ideas.
No duplicate character entries allow... welcome.
Little me decided to sit it out this year. :P ;)

Looking forward to all your entires, though.

> Adobe, Apple etc.
Okay, since the thread has derailed a little anyway: Of course the Adobe products are said to have fairly good interfaces, after all they make money with these products for years.
Just be careful you all - if you enter that cage with the golden paint. Once they have you hooked up it's often hard to get off their needle. And they love to (vendor-)lock people in. Only on selected operating systems, more and more digital restriction management (hardware assisted DRM), more and more cloud stuff, SaaS. If you stop paying, if there's a mistake, a connection problem, if the USA decide that some state is on a no-fly-list, BAM! They switch of the water supply. Then you won't be using their software any second longer. And if you're unlucky your data is in their cloud and gone. And it is maybe even in a format that other programs can't read, so you can't just seamlessly continue with a different program.
Therefore: Keep an eye out for open standards and never sava anything valuable to a cloud (at least not exclusively there).

I'm also against wasting hardware, but I am more of a hardware liberator. But sometimes enterprises put even more research in how to close and nail down their stuff than everything else. So people can't run alternate software on it, can't repair, can't upgrade, can't audit the firmware, etc.. So you are fully dependent on the good will of [insert enterprise here]. If the company decides "lifetime" is over, then you can litereally throw the device to the trash. Or nearly. This is sad.
Or if battery is worn out due to the charge/discharge cycles, often you cannot exchange it. Then the device is also losing a lot of value.
Once it is bought anyway you can of course put it to good use.

> snowstorms
It seems early, though I had a morning with just 1 °C at work already. But then, it is Canada, isn't it? One would expect Canada, northern Russia, large parts of Scandinavia to have snow fairly early.

A good amount of people also likes Krita. Not sure if that has to be ported to the mobile device (or if you just use it as an input device).
https://krita.org/

Please be aware that Adobe is evil and so is Apple. :p A lot of their stuff is just golden chains and SaaS (software as a service, can be terminated from their side with ease).

Anyway I'm looking forward to see all the entries past new year.

Hello there

go to the main gallery

Quite near the top the should be a line / bar with a few labels "new & featured art" "unseen" "search" and "My Albums" (on the outer right).
Go to My Albums.

http://www.elfquestfanart.com/index.php?action=media;area=mya

create an "Album" (directory aka folder aka album)

go into that Album
there you have now buttons under that bar with "My Albums"
that say "add an item to this album", "edit" and "mark as seen"

the "add" should bring you to the upload interface where you can set a title, some description, choose the very file (check that it is either a PNG or JPEG encoded image and not too large in filesize) and you might want to add some keywords.

If everything seems correct, press submit and wait for the upload to take place.

Well, well. Don't you dare to vanish for years again, just like this.

And congrats also here to your little one. May you be a happy family.

Indeed, climate change sucks a lot, so one has to do something.
[teacher mode on]
First step should be to check one's own behaviour e.g. energy consumption of all sorts: House isolated? Lights switched off if not needed? Efficiency class of household items? Big screens running? Car's fuel consumption? Driving behaviour? Possible use of public transport? What about the food you eat? Beef means a lot of CO2 and esp. also methane (CH4), which is a horrible greenhouse gas. Meat in general is more "climate intensive".
Then check election behaviour.
Then spread the message and convince more people to to the right steps to decrease ecological footprint. Oh, and it's not only changes household, it's also at work, though it might seem like fighting agains windmills. Still, just because e.g. industry blows out energy at large scale doesn't mean that we can leave that screen or lamp running uselessly 24/7.
[teacher mode off]

> "who am I? what do I want?" stage

Aren't we all at one or more points in our lives? ;)
Finding a place where you fit in, wondering what's in stock for you from life, self-re-evaluation, are my goals still the same? Do I have goals at all? What really would fulfill me, what are just empty veneers?

You are already lucky if you can move without being bound by job situations.

Cheers and take care!
