A decent one will clean off like a charm, not oily at all. The only residue is a scent. You can get rid of that easily enough with window cleaner or alcohol. (Not Goo Gone, tho. Nasty residue and scent. Not really effective, either.)

Basically, what Jeb said is what I'd do. Alcohol and Q-tips should clean most inks up to permanent Sharpie-type markers. On those, I'd use the 'orange' cleaners, some time, and a little elbow grease. Acetone would be my last resort unless I knew the platen was glass. If there are embedded scratches, I'd try the fillers they use on reading glasses and dvds that are scratched.

This is the only fan fiction that ever made me want to do an illustration for it.  I can't wait for the next chapter!

Sorry that I haven't replied to this (a lot going on this last month.) I'd LOVE it it you'd ever want to do any illo from my story, Windrider. Even a simple pencil sketch. Of course, after all the calendar craziness. Any particular scene?

I don't have any pix of stuff I've done (in storage). Here's a link showing a few Native American techniques. http://www.womenofthefurtrade.com/wst_page18.html

Although North Americans did trade with Central and South Americans for indigo, the real intense blues (like the Navajo used) came along when settlers traded artificial blueing with them.

Yeah, native Americans did it all the time using vegetable dyes, alkali dyes, shellfish dyes, etc.

Is it just me or does the outfit actually look like she has wooden ornaments on her sleeves and boots? How does that work?

Don't think it's wood, just puffy buff leather. I've seen motorcycle boots patterned that way.

Leather dyes are more intense than typical cloth dyes. They act more like a paint stain and last a loooong time. Buff or white leathers take the dyes the best and most intensely but pretty much any leather can be dyed, though very, very dark leathers you're better off painting.

Think of it like tattooing (but without the needles). I'll upload some examples of dyed/painted leathers, if anyone's interested. :)

Art and Elfquest / EQ.com down?

Has anyone tried logging on to EQ.com today? I've tried several times and even Google says it can't find it. It won't even pull up the cached pages. Guess I'll try using another browser in case it's just a Google Chrome thing.
Hope it's not another hack attack. :-\

Wow, you gave your story a nice, strong start with such a good description of the trees and time of year. Good job of 'showing' instead of just 'telling'. Luna also sounds like an interesting, determined character. I'd like to read more about her. :)

I can't tell you how much I agree with Jeb's post. Every individual member here is absolutely responsible for how much they do (or do not) want to participate in this community. (Hence the term "community".)  :) Unless you, specifically, told someone they and their ideas were NOT welcome here, everything else is perception on the other's part. And actions (or overreactions) are on their own heads. Endless rounds of 'mea culpas' can be self-fulfilling in their own right.  ;D

OK, "Sanctuary" should now be visible to those with 15+ posts.

There is so much I would like to say, but I have learned through this experience that my words have more reverberations than I was prepared for.  If an admin's post is misconstrued the ramifications can be much more damaging than from a regular member...and it's so very easy to misunderstand each other on the internet.  Heck, I don't understand myself most of the time. *chuckle*

What I can safely say, I think, is that FWIW I am sorry to everyone who has been hurt by this, because I do feel responsible for all but setting it up to happen.  No, I can't control member's behavior, but I can clearly communicate.

Don't be so hard on yourself, Foxeye. People also have to be responsible for the things they misconstrue and not take a knee-jerk reaction to every perceived slight. Communicating through the internet isn't an excuse for leaving common sense, good manners, and civil discourse at the door. Granted, I never really understood the purpose of a "Rants" section and didn't participate in it, so... :-[

Cool! My scanner's bed wasn't quite large enough to get in the full posters, but only the edges (mostly white space, a couple of feet, edge of hair) got trimmed off. I'll upload them as soon as I can.  :D

EDIT: Didn't know you could only add 10 images a day.  :-[ I'll add the rest over the next couple of days. Although it isn't essential, if we'd like to keep the images sequential in the slide show view, anyone else should hold off on adding anything to that sub-album til I'm finished.  ;D

Does anyone have a link to some good scans of the "Centerfold" posters?

I have all the posters except for #4 (the Preservers) and can scan them life-sized front and back. Would it be okay with Foxeye and Kael if I set up a Gallery with them for reference work only? To be labeled with WARP's copyright, of course.

With so many new members joining for the Calendar contest, hopefully this drag more writers on board, too.  :D

I guess I'll kick off the first discussion topic:

What inspires you to write?

With me, it's generally that others aren't writing the kind of stories I want to read. Or, at least, aren't writing enough of them.  ;D I can be either very driven or very lazy about the whole thing. When I'm in the zone for it, I can go for hours or even days getting down the words I hear in my head. It's almost like overhearing a conversation and trying to keep up with it with my typing. When I'm not in the zone, I usually spend my time running over in my head plot points I want to hit or want to strengthen up. Or, draw out scenes for further inspiration. But I suppose my main reason to write is that I love words and how they fit together and that I like to go to places and have adventures that I generally don't get to do in real life.

I've been remiss in commenting in the Writer's forum. (bad me). I really like this gender-bender story, Jeb. Some definite surprises for the reader. You should also add some of your own illos to this.

Welcome, spazzy! Origin stories are always fun to do. I wonder what Windrider could have said to Cutter that he didn't expect?

Wow, thanks for the compliment!  :D The AEA is still definitely an on-going concern, tho it's going to be at least a month or more before I can devote any time to it. (I have a move coming up.) I'm also on the look-out for anyone interested in doing some beta reading or looking over my outline material for the story.

Thanks very much again, I didn't think anyone was still reading this.  ;D

I think Murrel might also be one of the elves on the cover of #13, if her hair was in dreads and she were wearing summer furs:

Wendy included a beautiful elf maiden Murrel in the Lovemates calendar, paired with Timmorn.  I don't know anything about her, but she must be canon.

Murrel (Valloa) is Rahnee the She-Wolf's mom. :D

Art and Elfquest / Re: Braided hair
« on: August 07, 2011, 10:41:55 AM »
What afke said. :D  I'd also suggest looking at examples and outlines of Celtic knotting. Very useful in seeing how strands work together in a woven pattern (which is really what braiding is). Also, remember that braids have more heft and weight to them than individual strands, that they tend to conform to the skull's shape, that different hair textures braid a bit differently, and that adding flyaways and wisps will really help sell the idea of a braid.

Cold-pressed Bristol board is a good surface for Prismacolors with little bleedthrough. It's also mostly gentle on the marker tips. Office paper, newsprint, and watercolor paper soaks up the pigments like a sponge. :(

The technique I like to use is keeping a light hand (like working with watercolor), laying down the lightest colors first (maybe masking off spots of pure white to stop bleeding), letting the darker colors just barely overlap in the lighter ones (for a nice gradient), using a blender pen sparingly (they can muddy the gradients, especially if the tip is smudged or dirty), and using a good fixative afterward to help prevent warping and fading. The overlaps can be very obvious, even for the same color marker, so I try to incorporate them a design element. A same color overlap can be nearly a shade-and-a-half darker than the original color. Also, laying down your light colors first keeps the marker tips from picking up darker pigments, which can corrupt your future coloring.

I got my Prisma set years ago when I worked for an art supply wholesaler, which means they were seriously discounted (yippie!) Never would have been able to afford a 70-pen set otherwise. I love 'em (very vibrant) but I don't use them nearly as much as I use to. Digital's just too convenient. I'd like to experiment with Coptic (I think they have a better range of darker skin tones.)

Voted 'no preference'. I don't really care who picked what/is drawing who until I actually see the work. In art, your only competition is yourself (I should hope).  ;D

If it helps any, Elea, the full run of the comics is available to be viewed at Elfquest.com. You may not be able to make out all of the text, but, Wendy Pini's imagery is so good, characteristics should be easy to follow.

Art and Elfquest / Re: Hints for drawing curly hair?
« on: April 13, 2011, 11:07:13 AM »
Jeb, congrats on wanting to tackle such an interesting subject as curly hair! I think it really adds interest and character to a drawing when the subject has waves and curls instead of the usual broomstick-straight stuff.
