Excellent!  I have some ideas for Yurek, and I am sure I can work it out so that Voll works into that. :D

I sort of understand the decision, from a workload standpoint.  If they're allowing comments on website posts, they'll have to moderate that to some extent.  It would be interesting to know how many active uses the forum had and how much of a moderating job was involved there.  It's definitely work and time, and I can understand that perhaps something had to go.

And I suppose it's possible that the suddenness was just a factor of wanting to do it, not wanting to have people endlessly debate it.  (Although there is certainly a discussion about it in the post's comments.)  Since the forum is archived and visible, people didn't lose what they had posted, I guess?  So a warning wasn't necessary from a "save all your stuff before it goes away" standpoint.

But yeah, it seems a little unfriendly to users who used it as a community.

Wow.  I have to say, I'm pretty surprised by that move!  Not that I doubt that maintaining the EQ.com forum was a lot of work (and I saw someone comment about "less than savory stuff" happening somewhere, or behind the scenes, that may have precipitated the closing? I wonder what that was?).  But it just seems so abrupt!

I do sort of have to say that I won't miss the EQ.com forum itself -- the new one, I mean, and I'm mainly speaking about the format.  I found it really user-unfriendly, and for that reason I kind of stopped going there for most things.

But I completely understand that there were people who liked it and used it, and they're now bereft of a community.  :(

I hope that some find this place a good substitute!  Right now, it doesn't "do" all of the things that the EQ.com forum did, but I imagine it could expand a little to accommodate some of those activities.

I wonder if anyone will try to create a fan-run "general ElfQuest" forum.  The fact that Scroll of Colors / the EQ.com forum always had the official stamp of WaRP (and sometimes-participation from RP) was nice, but it seems to me that it wasn't necessarily *the* thing that people valued about the community.

I don't mean to sound super-opposed to it!  I'm just interested to hear the thinking on it, and ideas for how to make the most of some of that leftover space.

(Even if it's just, "do something interesting and generically decorative for the background, while avoiding elements that would take away from the face's primary job of conveying the emotion.")

Yes, I'm curious as well about the landscape orientation for what sounds like art that's really supposed to be nothing BUT head-shots, without too much in the way of background elements.  It sounds like we can use decorative background elements, but that's it, right?  It's just… with landscape orientation, it seems like a head-and-shoulders portrait leaves a lot of horizontal space empty, if you decide to show the entire head.

Just to say -- I've been really flaky lately, and so I didn't get in here to vote, or to discuss.  But that's also because I often don't feel strongly about the theme, and will just try to do whatever others decide on.  Same this time -- I'll definitely submit something!  Although now I'm going to go over to the discussion thread and hope that someone explains a bit better what this theme means (and doesn't mean)!

03/03/14: Congratulations to Ally, who has adopted Chicory!  Remaining adoptables (at the moment) listed below.

04/04/14: new character available for adoption, Thornbow!

07/06/14: congrats to Mira, who adopted Beetle!

11/13/14: congrats to Ingrid, who adopted Dreamflight!  And to Angie, who adopted Thornbow!

Honey

Aged 315.  The sister of Thornbow; mother of Dreamflight (see above) and Recognized of Greenweave, from whom she is somewhat estranged; Honey spent 30 years in wrapstuff, awaiting the time when the tribe would have a healer who could cure her fatal pneumonia.   When she was wrapped, she had an apparently-happy family life with Greenweave and Dreamflight.  When she came out of wrapstuf, she found that Greenweave had gone back to his previous lover, Cloudfern, and that her daughter was a bit of a mess over the dissolution of her family.  Previously someone who concentrated on fishing, Honey decided to remake herself as a hunter, finding that she would be happiest when she kept herself active and within the wolfsong and the Now.  She is sweet of nature, and can be generous and kind, but she is so prone to strong feelings and romantic ideals that she can become mercurial and subtly manipulative when trying to make things come out the way she wants.  Honey's more grounded and centered these days although she can still be prone to social anxiety.

Her full Information Sheet can be seen
here,
including all stories and art related to the character.

No problem!  I don't know what their status is at the moment, with taking new players, but you might check out Oakleaf Holt, which I think is more of an RP style group.

I wonder if a male can play a female character the right way...

I think that's a question that only you can answer. :)  I've known several guys who liked to play female characters, and who were good at it.  Just as we have plenty of women who play male characters (*cough*), and often prefer that.

The bigger question, I think, is whether the style of "play" at RTH would appeal to you.  I think you've mentioned (here and elsewhere, like at SoC) that you have primarily been a roleplayer.  But, I would caution, RTH is *not* a RP group in the usual sense of the term.  We usually talk in terms of "players" and people owning and operating a character, but our style of play is quite different from the way I understand most RP groups to operate.  We don't do play-by-post or other types of "live" storylines.

Instead, RTH builds storylines through members writing largely stand-alone stories (sometimes, serialized if they are longer).  Some members are writers, while others are artists.  Unlike most RP groups, you may not only write for / draw for your own character, but others -- in fact, it's rather expected.  (A character's owner always gets to see a story or art and approve it, or ask for whatever changes they want, before it is publicly posted.)  Members who are primarily artists can often trade art to others to get stories written.  (Or their characters may wind up being involved in others' stories anyway.)  Both writers and artists may write in the "present" (we do have a timeline that advances at the rate of 1=1 in-story to real-life year), but may also explore any point in a character's history, or write about the tribe's ancestors.

This is the style of play I have been used to since I joined a fandom at age 12, back in the early 80s.  ;)  But I gather it can be an adjustment for some folks who are used to RP, and thus aren't used to writing full stories, or writing for the characters of others.

RTH is also "moderated" in the sense of having a council (or board) that makes sure players stay within the group's guidelines, and having a Story Approval Team that subjects submitted stories to an editing process -- something that can also be an adjustment for some folks.  Stories are reviewed both for grammar/spelling, and also for how they fit into the world's guidelines. (Which are very similar to general ElfQuest guidelines, but in some cases refined for our particular group.)

All of this means that if you haven't experienced a group like RTH before... you might be better off joining as a Reader Member, and getting a feel for it, before taking the plunge of adopting a character (and being subjected to participation requirements and so on).  Reader Members essentially are like "lurkers with benefits", get a bit more access to our forums, and they are allowed to make creative contributions (for any current character or ancestor; with the usual approval process).   So it can be a way to test whether you like the way the group operates, without pressure.  Also, RMs get first crack when characters become adoptable (which is unpredictable).

So, for example, if you think you prefer to play a male character, you might join as an RM; do some reading; make submissions for some of the existing male characters; and if/when a male becomes available for adoption, you'd be in a very good position to apply.  On the other hand, you could find that the way the group operates doesn't work for you -- which is fine!  we know it isn't going to work for everyone -- in which case, you won't have had the frustration of dealing with the pressure that comes with owning a character.

Long story short: if you're unsure, I'd suggest Reader Membership for a bit, to explore further. :)

Yeah, I find it really interesting that he's coloring Final Quest.  Obviously, it looked like the Prologue was being both inked and colored by Wendy.  I think it's a REALLY good idea to split those duties, though.

So, wait... what exactly will he be recoloring?  I'm not sure what the Dark Horse issues are?

I get the impression that the two pages he's put up are only test pages?  So he's not recoloring the OQ... which would be good, because we really don't need an umpteenth recolor of that.  It was only a few years ago that DC put out the 4-volume hardcover set recolored by Wendy in Photoshop. I'd assume that should stand as the "definitive version".

(Re. the above -- I agree, my soft spot is for the original hand-coloring job.  Not as "realistic" in many places, but it's just... charming and sometimes delicate, and you can just tell it's hand-done.)

So, does it mean he's recoloring SABM and KOTBW?  Because man, those are the ones that sorely need it!

For me, looking at his examples: the first one is... fine.  I mean... that's like the 4th color version of that scene I've seen?  It's hard to care any more about yet another subtle recoloring.   I like the first version from the 80s.  Wendy's latest one is okay.  Sonny's doesn't seem THAT different from Wendy's?  I can imagine it being good practice for him, but it doesn't do a lot for me.

Now, the two versions of the dance from SABM?  WOW!!!   :o  Fantastic to finally see that colored well!

(Yeah, I'll go leave comments there too.)

Chit-Chat / Re: Holts and Nostalgia

Alas, I didn't get involved in EQ fandom until 2006, when I joined RTH.  I was introduced to the comics back in 1986, but it didn't occur to me that there would be fan-groups for it.  So I did EQ fan-art, but it wasn't widely shared.

My early print fandom experience was similar, though; it was just in Pern fandom, starting in 1982.  Very similar, "create your own character in this world" groups.  I was first part of Ista9, then also Fort9, Logres, and Kadanzer Weyrs.

I'm in too!  Sorry!

I think that for me, any time between next week and early June will be fine for me.  There will be a period of time in June when I'm completely unavailable.  But I'm also pretty fast and ought to be able to turn my part around in a couple of days.

I need to look over the thread again and figure out if there's anything else you need a response on.  I've participated in one of these things before, and then participated in and ran another, so I have some ideas about ways to do it, but I'm really open to different ideas, because we just sort of figured it out as we went along.
