Art and Elfquest / 2025 Fan Art Calendar Guidelines
« on: January 15, 2024, 01:09:33 PM »
The theme for the 2025 EQ Fan Art Calendar is: MAKERS - The Creativity of Elfquest

**You may use characters from the original quest to the final quest but, you must do your best not to spoil things for those who have not yet read the most recent installment of the series**

Submissions for the 2025 Calendar are being accepted:
February 3, 2024, through November 3, 2024

THEME

Submitted artwork should represent the theme "Makers", which means the creativity of characters in the Elfquest series.

IMPORTANT: Don't go too far outside the realm of possibility with this theme. The character(s) you choose must have been seen doing the task/hobby you decided on somewhere in the comics or there should be mention of them doing the task/hobby in print (EQ comic, novels etc.). Entries that go too far off into a 'this probably didn't happen' scenario and are not canon in nature will not be accepted.

You may show characters doing mundane tasks but I would like there to always be an element of creativity in the action, so nothing so mundane/out of necessity as to not be creative on some level.

Please try to refrain from simply putting things we have already seen in the comic into your art style, for example, Winnowill shaping Tyldak, or Redlance making a seed sprout for Minyah in the Sun Village. Be creative.

DETAILS

Read carefully...

If you would like to participate please email me (at the new Fan Calendar Gmail: elfquestfanartcalendar@gmail.com) to let me know you are thinking about submitting something for the 2025 calendar. Along with the following information:

Your Name:
EQFA User Name:
Email Address:

Please don't give any details about your submission at this time, just let me know that you want to get involved. Once your email is received I will change your primary member group so you can access the secret fan calendar thread.

Feel free to use the hidden thread to talk about ideas, themes etc. As always I would like to keep the calendar varied, so chatting a bit about characters and themes is a good way to help make that happen.

This year an email letting me know you want to participate is how you will get into the calendar hideout but not how you will get into the calendar. For this, I would like a finished sketch. You have from February 3 to May 31 to send in your sketch. Once your sketch is received you will be added to the participant list, your character choice will be locked in and I will expect you to finish your submission and have it in by the deadline at the beginning of November.

The number of submissions required: 11

By mid-May, you should have sent in your sketch or have it nearly finished. Use the Fan Calendar Hideout to give updates on your progress. This will help to determine if we have enough entries for the calendar. If at any time you feel you cannot continue just send a message, there won't be any hard feelings.

Please keep in mind that you have approx. 4 months to get your sketch ready and an additional 5 months to finish your piece. There will be no extensions, November 3 is the final day for submissions. Now that I have permanent permission to post the printed version I would like to get that up on Zazzle by December 1, 2024, so those who want to purchase it can have it on or before January 1.

You may submit up to three entries for the calendar but before you contemplate that second or third entry you must first finish and submit one entry to Maggie.

GROUPS

You may work in groups of two if that makes things easier for you. Please let me know who you will work with when you sign up.

How you work in your group is totally up to you. One of you may supply a sketch for the other to ink and colour or you may work together to complete the scene. It doesn't matter so long as you both agree.

CONTENT

Entries must be original artwork created specifically for the calendar. The use of photos or "borrowed" art for backgrounds is not allowed.

Entries must not be available for the general public to view online until the okay is given for general sharing. Before then, any entries found online in any form (thumbnails, crops, etc.) will be disqualified and removed.

Canon Elfquest characters (of any race) only. No what-if characters (i.e., Worldpool).

PG-13 or under.

FORMAT

**Please make sure your submissions are the correct size. Any submissions that are not 3300x2550 pixels or 11 x 8.5 inches at 300dpi will not be accepted**

All entries should be in full colour, with a full background. No font please (this does not include your signature or mark used to sign your work).

Size: 11"x 8.5" (pictures must be landscape oriented - wider than they are tall)

Resolution: 3300 x 2550 pixels (11" x 8.5" at 300dpi)

File format: JPEG/PNG format only

IMPORTANT: I am no longer adding a white border to the printed version of the calendar so please leave about a half-inch around the edge of your work, that doesn't contain any important elements. I don't want arms cut off or a hole in a character's head. I cannot be responsible if bits get cut off on the printed version. To be safe leave room around the edges of your work, with all important elements safely in the center.

I will no longer be putting credits and titles on the individual submissions for the printed version of the calendar. These details will now go on the back of the calendar, so consider this when you decide on a title, there isn't a lot of space, so try and keep it short where possible.

HOW TO SUBMIT

Please email your full-sized entry to Maggie (the new email for submissions is: elfquestfanartcalendar@gmail.com). Email directly (using the new address) when you have an entry ready to be submitted. Submissions should now be named, using the title of your submission and the artist credit you want to use (for example: Vintage by Maggie Atkinson). Do not embed your image, attach it to the email.
Entries should be received by midnight CST, November 3, 2024.

CREDIT

The artist's credit will be used for credits on the calendar/website.

PUBLISHING

The eleven winners will be chosen by a panel of judges (if more than 11 entries are submitted).

The finished calendar will be available for download at elfquestfanart.com. In addition, the calendar may be published and available for purchase.

QUESTIONS

Any questions about the calendar may be asked and answered on this thread or PM/email Maggie.

Time to choose our next calendar theme...

I've gone with the unused themes we've had from previous years, there are a lot of them and I feel like adding more would be silly and make choosing even more difficult. ;D

The theme for the 2023 EQ Fan Art Calendar is: ALL ELDERS

**You may use characters from the original quest to the final quest but you must do your best not to totally spoil things for those who have not yet read the most recent installment of the series**

Submissions for the 2024 Calendar are being accepted:
February 3, 2023, through November 3, 2023

THEME

Submitted artwork should represent the theme "All Elders", which means older (possibly wiser) Elfquest Characters (Savah, Lord Voll, Treestump, Ekuar, Timmain, Salt etc).

DETAILS

Please read carefully...

If you would like to participate please PM me via the site (Maggie) to let me know you are thinking about submitting something for the 2024 calendar. Please don't give any details about your submission at this time, just let me know that you want to get involved. Once your PM is received I will change your primary member group so you can access the secret fan calendar thread.

Feel free to use the hidden thread to discuss ideas, themes etc. As always I would like to keep the calendar varied, so chatting a bit about characters and themes is a good way to help make that happen.

This year a PM letting me know you want to participate is how you will get into the calendar hideout but not how you will get into the calendar. For this, I would like a finished sketch. Once your sketch and details are received you will be added to the participant list, your character choice will be locked in and I will expect you to finish your submission and have it in by the deadline at the beginning of November.

I'm hoping this will be a good way for each participant to really decide if they can manage a submission. I know we all tend to procrastinate when there is a lot of time between the start and end of this project. So giving several months to come up with a sketch, seemed like a remedy to that. Figuring out those first details tends to be more difficult than taking things from a solid concept/sketch to a finished submission.

Time to choose our next calendar theme...

Art and Elfquest / 2023 Fan Art Calendar Guidelines
« on: February 28, 2022, 04:30:40 PM »
The theme for the 2023 EQ Fan Art Calendar is: ARTISTS CHOICE

**You may use characters from the original quest to the final quest but you must do your best not to totally spoil things for those who have not yet read the most recent installment of the series**

Submissions for the 2023 Calendar are being accepted:
March 1st, 2022 through August 31st, 2022
**The guidelines have been modified, so please read carefully**

THEME

Submitted artwork should represent the theme "Artists Choice", which means you are free to choose your own theme this year.

There will also be the added fun of a hidden message in each submission. You are free to express this in any way you like but you are required to "hide" 21 of something in your submission, to represent 21 years of the EQ fan calendar. It doesn't have to be obvious but it should be something that people viewing the submission are able to discover without too much effort. For example, Moonshade stitching a new vest for Redlance and she has completed 21 stitches. Or Pike, with 21 dreamberries scattered around him. You could even take on the extreme challenge of putting 21 characters in your submission.

As always a secret thread will be created for participants to discuss submission ideas and characters so we can keep things varied for the calendar.

The number of submissions required: 11

DETAILS

Joining the calendar will be a bit different this year, so please read carefully.

Art and Elfquest / 2023 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
« on: January 05, 2022, 05:54:23 PM »
I realized when I was putting the 2022 calendar on the site that the fan calendar is 20 years old (this year) and that the 2023 calendar will be my 10th year organizing (I took over in 2013). I think we need to do something special to commemorate 21 years of fan calendars.

Any suggestions?

Not really looking for theme ideas I think we have enough of those we can go to (unless you have a brilliant one, then please post). Trying to find a way to make the calendar a little special this time. Ideas on how to go about doing that are most welcome.

There you can give a brief description of your concept as well as a list of all the characters you plan to use and which ones are the main focus. Please be open to discussion, as it may take a bit of back and forth to keep the calendar varied. Also, remember the main focus is the character's home, not necessarily the character itself.

• You will be asked to update Maggie and the rest of the participants via the secret thread in July with your progress. This will help to determine if we have enough entries for the calendar and will let everyone know if used characters are now available. If at any time you feel you cannot continue just send a message, there won’t be any hard feelings.

Art and Elfquest / 2022 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
« on: January 08, 2021, 12:45:22 PM »
While we wait for the 2021 fan calendar I thought we could start chatting about next year's calendar. I think the two-stage deadline worked last year (earlier for some later for others), so that will stay the same but I was wondering about the theme.

Do you all want to submit ideas and vote as usual or should the theme be something that is discussed and decided by those who are participating? We also have several themes that haven't been used so we could always put those to a poll again and see what happens. I was thinking it would be nice given last year and the fact that the pandemic is still around this year that we choose a light theme for 2022 if possible. Something funny, or pretty or hopeful.

Let me know your thoughts.  ;)

Art and Elfquest / 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
« on: March 05, 2020, 10:19:45 AM »
Alright, I wanted to start chatting about next years calendar. We have discussed some new ways of dealing with time, loss of interest, collaboration etc. so I think we're good there (I will post the official guidelines soon) but I was wondering about the theme.

Do you all want to submit ideas and vote as usual or should the theme be something that is discussed and decided by those who are participating?

Let me know your thoughts.  :)

The theme for the 2020 EQ Fan Art Calendar is: OUR FAVOURITES

**You may use characters from the original quest to the final quest but you must do your best not to spoil things for those who have not yet read the most recent installment of the series**

Submissions for the 2020 Calendar are being accepted:
February 5th, 2019 through October 31st, 2019

THEME

Submitted artwork should represent the theme "Our Favourites"

This theme is meant to be easy and enjoyable. Please represent your favourite character(s), moments, the things you love best about Elfquest, etc. Whatever you like (within reason please). Please note, reproductions of scenes already portrayed in the EQ saga will not be accepted. You need to be more creative. Look at the scene from a different angle, or another characters perspective. Carbon copies are a no, no.

Number of submissions required: 11 (I will do the cover and that artwork will also be included in the calendar this year).

DETAILS

• You must first post to the thread that you would like to participate. Don't give any details, just say... "I'm in!" or "I would like to participate this year". I will contact you once I know you want to be a part of the calendar to find out what your concept is.

• Once you have been contacted by me, you will be required to send me a brief description of your concept as well as a list of all the characters you plan to use and which ones are the main focus. Please have an alternate idea in mind, in case someone ahead of you on the list has a similar idea.

Please copy and paste the following into the PM with all fields filled in:

Your Name:
EQFA User Name:
Artist Credit (Real or User only):
Email Address:
Description of Concept:
Character Choice:

• As they come in I will post which characters are being used to the thread (how they are being used and who is using them will be kept secret). Let's try and keep things as varied as possible.

• You will be asked to update Maggie in June with your progress. This will help to determine if we will have enough entries for the calendar. If at any time you feel you cannot continue just send a message, there won’t be any hard feelings.

• Please keep in mind that you have approx. 8 months to get your submission ready, which should be more than enough time. If there is no response to the request for progress I will have to assume you are no longer participating and I will have no choice but to find a replacement artist. Communication is key, so please keep in touch.

• You may submit up to three entries for the calendar but before you contemplate that second or third entry you must first finish and submit one entry to Maggie.

GROUPS

• You may work in groups of two if that makes things easier for you. Please let me know who you will be working with when you sign up.

• How you work in your group is totally up to you. One of you may supply a sketch for the other to ink and colour or you may work together to complete the scene. It doesn’t matter so long as you both agree.

CONTENT

• Entries must be original artwork created specifically for the calendar. The use of photos or "borrowed" art for backgrounds is not allowed.

• Entries must not be available for the general public to view online until the okay is given for general sharing. Before then, any entries found online in any form (thumbnails, crops, etc.) will be disqualified and removed.

• Canon Elfquest characters (of any race) only. No what-if characters (i.e., Worldpool).

• PG-13 or under.

FORMAT

**Please make sure your submissions are the correct size. Any submissions that are not 3300x2550 pixels or 11 x 8.5 inches at 300dpi will not be accepted**

• All entries should be in full color, with some type of a background. No font please.

• Size: 11"x 8.5" (pictures must be landscape oriented - wider than they are tall)

• Resolution: 3300 x 2550 pixels (11" x 8.5" at 300dpi)

• File format: JPEG/PNG format only

HOW TO SUBMIT

• When you are ready please email your full-sized entry to Maggie. Please PM Maggie when you have an entry ready to be submitted.

• Entries must be received by midnight CST, October 31, 2019.

Include the following:

• Your submission as an attachment not embedded into an email.

• Title of your submission. Titles will be included on the calendar.

CREDIT

• The artist credit will be used for credits on the calendar/website.

PUBLISHING

• The eleven winners will be chosen by a panel of judges (if more than 11 entries are submitted).

• The finished calendar will be available for download at elfquestfanart.com. In addition, the calendar may be published and available for purchase.

QUESTIONS

• Any questions about the calendar may be asked and answered on this thread or PM Maggie.

Art and Elfquest / 2019 Fan Calendar Theme
« on: November 01, 2017, 11:41:53 AM »
The 2018 Fan Calendar is set to come out in a few months but let's get started on discussing the theme for next years calendar.

I would like to leave this thread open for the month of November and then have a poll for voting during the month of December which should give everyone time to think up ideas and then vote for their favourite.

I plan to announce the winning theme on January 1st, which will give everyone 10 months to submit an entry. Again I believe this is plenty of time to work with and if not, I say again that you aren't that in to EQ anymore or are just too busy to find the time for it. I can respect that but I would appreciate some consideration before you jump in and say you'd like to be a part of this. I consider committing to the EQ fan calendar to be just as important as anything else you might commit to throughout the year. I want submissions to reflect the love you have for EQ and the skillset you posses. I don't want rush jobs and I don't want dropouts. I want you to commit only if it will be enjoyable to you and only if you have the time.

Here are the themes that were on the last poll:

Chiefs - Past, Present and Future
Evolution - The Then and Now of EQ
Cubs
All Action
Comedy - The Merriment of EQ
Daily Life
The Homes of EQ

Any other ideas? If so post them below. I'll give everyone until November 30th to add their ideas and then I'll create a poll with the themes which will be open during the month of December. The winner will be announced on the Jan 1st along with the 2018 calendar.

The theme for the 2018 Elfquest Fan Art Calendar is: Entirely Ekuar

**You may use Ekuar/any other character interaction from The Original Quest, Siege at Blue Mountain and Kings of the Broken Wheel **

Submissions for the 2017 Calendar are being accepted:
Jan 4th, 2017 through October 31st, 2017

THEME

Submitted artwork should represent the theme "Entirely Ekuar”.

This means that the character Ekuar must be the main focus of each submission. You will be able to use additional characters if you like but Ekuar should remain in the spotlight.

DETAILS

•Ekuar must be the main focus of each submission. You are free to use additional character if you wish but it is not required.

•You may use any extra characters in your submission so long as they belong to the following: The Original Quest, Siege at Blue Mountain and Kings of the Broken Wheel.

•You will be required to PM Maggie to let her know you are participating in the calendar this year. Please do not post a message to the board, only send a PM.

•No one wants to limit creativity but it would be great if we could keep open communication about secondary characters in all entries. This will help to ensure the calendar submissions are as varied as possible. Having one main focus is interesting; this turning into a 12 month Ekuar/Rayek calendar is not. There are many possibilities so let’s do our best to keep this theme as interesting as possible. Please post your secondary character ideas to the thread, so we can do our best not to get a lot of repeat submissions.

•You will be asked to update Maggie in March, June and September with your progress. This will help to determine if we will have enough entries for the calendar. If at any time you feel you cannot continue just send a message, there won’t be any hard feelings.

•Please keep in mind that you have approx. 10 months to get your submission ready, which should be more than enough time. If there is no response to the requests for progress I will have to assume you are no longer participating and I will have no choice but to find a replacement artist. Communication is key, so please keep in touch.

•You may submit up to three entries for the calendar but before you contemplate that second or third entry you must first finish and submit one entry to Maggie.

GROUPS

•You may work in groups of two if that makes things easier for you. Please let me know who you will be working with when you sign up.

•How you work in your group is totally up to you. One of you may supply a sketch for the other to ink and colour or you may work together to complete the scene. It doesn’t matter so long as you both agree.

CONTENT

•Entries must be original artwork created specifically for the calendar. The use of photos or "borrowed" art for backgrounds is not allowed.

•Entries must not be available for the general public to view online until the okay is given for general sharing. Before then, any entries found online in any form (thumbnails, crops, etc.) will be disqualified and removed.

•Canon Elfquest characters (of any race) only. No what-if characters (i.e., Worldpool).

•PG-13 or under.

FORMAT

**Please make sure your submissions are the correct size. Any submissions that are not 3300x2550 pixels  or 11 x 8.5 inches at 300dpi will not be accepted**

•All entries should be in full color, with some type of a background.

•Size: 11"x 8.5" (pictures must be landscape oriented - wider than they are tall)

•Resolution: 3300 x 2550 pixels (11" x 8.5" at 300dpi)

•File format: JPEG/PNG format only

HOW TO SUBMIT

•When you are ready please email your full-sized entry to Maggie. Please PM Maggie when you have an entry ready to be submitted.

•Entries must be received by midnight CST, October 31, 2017.

Include the following:

**Please note, from now on you may either submit your real name, example Maggie Atkinson or the name you use at the EQFA site, example Treefox.  Huge, long names which include middle names mixed in with last names and then AKA: your elf name etc. will not be accepted. **

•Title (Required):  Title of your submission.  Titles will be included on the calendar.
•Artist Credits (Required):  Will be included on the calendar.
•Email (Required):

CREDIT

•The artist credit will be used for credits on the calendar/website.

Alright, the 2017 Fan Calendar is set to come out in a few weeks, so let's get started on discussing the theme for next years calendar.

I'd like to have a decision made by January 1st, which will give everyone 10 months to submit an entry. This is plenty of time to work with and if not, well let's face it you aren't that in to EQ anymore or are just too busy to find the time for it.

Here are the themes that were on the last poll, minus contrasts of course.

Chiefs - Past, Present and Future
Evolution - The Then and Now of EQ
Entirely Ekuar - 12 Months of Ekuar (of course this could be 12 months of any character)
Comedy and Tragedy

Any other ideas? If so post them below. I'll give everyone until Dec 24th to add their two cents and then I'll create a poll with the theme ideas and the winner will be announced on the 1st along with the 2017 calendar. ;)

Art and Elfquest / 2016 EQ Fan Calendar Guidelines
« on: February 28, 2015, 10:43:32 AM »
The theme for the 2016 Elfquest Fan Art Calendar is: Tribes

Submissions for the 2016 Calendar are being accepted:
March 1st through September 30th 2015

THEME

•Submitted artwork should represent the theme "Tribes”.

DETAILS

Things are going to be done a little differently, as it seems like a lot of you are struggling to be able to participate in the calendar each year.
This is why the 2016 calendar will be based on EQ Tribes, a theme I thought would be a lot of fun (this eliminates the need and time taken to vote for a theme).

Another change will be judging, I would prefer not to have any. That being said, what I would like is for those of you wishing to participate to sign up, rather than just mention you would like to participate. This means you will be given the responsibility of getting a piece of artwork ready for a specific month in the calendar so be sure you have the time and energy to do so.

Once you have signed up you will be given a specific month, tribe and three characters to work with. You must choose at least two of the assigned characters (but you may keep all three). You will need at least four characters in your submission so if you want, you may add one to the three you have been given or add two if you decide to drop one of your assigned characters.
You may want more than four characters in your submission and that is up to you but you must have at least two of the assigned characters in your submission.

Sorry I forgot this - Full backgrounds please, I want the characters to be in their customary environments around the time of year you receive as your month.

December which is the last month in the calendar will hopefully be a piece of artwork that represents the beloved dead and will be comprised of one member from each tribe. I would ultimately like for all the calendar participants to work on this month together. Please let me know if you have any reservations about this when you sign up.

Please note, I will be asking for a progress report sometime in May which may include me asking to see how your submission is coming along.

TRIBES

•The tribes that will be represented in the calendar are as follows:

Wolfriders
Sunfolk
Go-Backs
Gliders
Trolls
Humans
Wolves
Wavedancers
High Ones – Elf Form
High Ones – Cone Head
Preservers
Beloved Dead

I can appreciate the fact that many of you will want to ask for a specific tribe to work with but I will be handing out the tribes and characters at random to keep it fair for everyone.

GROUPS

•You may work in groups of two if that makes things easier for you. Please let me know who you will be working with when you sign up.

How you work in your group is totally up to you. One of you may supply a sketch for the other to ink and colour or you may work together to complete the scene. It doesn’t matter so long as you both agree.

Art and Elfquest / 2015 Fan Calendar Guidelines
« on: April 13, 2014, 07:42:46 PM »
The theme for the 2015 Elfquest Fan Art Calendar is: Emotive Portraits

Submissions for the 2015 Calendar Contest are being accepted:
April 14th, 2014 through October 14th, 2014

THEME

•Submitted artwork should represent the theme "Emotive Portraits."

•The world of Elfquest is fraught with emotion and this theme allows you to convey that emotion using only the characters face and expression. I know this may seem like a difficult task but what is more lovely than when Savah smiles and the lines around her eyes crinkle and you know she is truly happy. Or when Strongbow gives one of his signature, I'm not happy looks. You don't need anything but that expression on his face to know you're in big trouble. Take a look at the comics to gain inspiration.

•You may use any one character in your submission as well as any one emotion.

•Because there are so few people able to submit art to the calendar you are required to PM Maggie with three character/three emotion choices so she can make sure there are no duplicate entries. Please do not begin your submission until you hear back from Maggie. She will also post a list of used characters and emotions so that we all know what is still available.

•Here is an example of an acceptable choice: Pike has a huge smile playing across his face, his cheeks are bright red and his eyes are out of focus. I suppose drunk isn't exactly an emotion but this theme is mostly geared toward telling the viewer what is going on using only the expression on the characters face.

•Here is an example that is not an acceptable choice: Ember is holding her eye and wagging her fist at a bird with a pointy beak. You can tell she's mad and that the bird pecked her in the eye but using her hands and the bird in the scene gives too much away.

•You may show the character from just below their shoulders to the top of their head. You may also use some other imagery in your submission such as some leaves or a blue sky in the background. Please do not use anything that assists the viewer in figuring out the emotion you are trying to convey or any limbs, this is all about portraits and expressions, so the face is the key.
