Chit-Chat / Re: Feather Extensions
« on: July 19, 2011, 08:08:31 AM »
*shrug* I won't ever eat veal either, or shellfish for that matter. I don't fish. I just don't think that a lighthearted thread about someone sharing something artistic is the correct time or place for a soap-box rant. That should go on the soapbox rant thread for people who'd actually *like* to read it. You have to remember that education is a choice, as well; if it's forced on everyone around you it becomes proselytizing. In short: You either *are* sorry for the buzzkill or you aren't. One or the other. Can't have your cake and eat it, too.

Same can be said for leather products, furs, pate de foie gra (sp?) and hamburgers. If you're not a vegetarian who uses purey man-made products, then you are the recipient of *something* like this, so dwelling on one or the other specific doesn't really do anything about the big picture.

Good tip! I won't be following it because I do most everything the hard way. ;P For those stubborn people like me, what I'm doing is starting with the longer piece (the vertical/horizontal "sexy") then adding the portrait, then using remaining space for the smaller action picture. ^_^

Art and Elfquest / Re: Hints for drawing curly hair?
« on: July 13, 2011, 01:52:34 PM »
I've never mastered drawing "realism" or anything like that. But for me, curly hair the way I do it is actually sometimes easier than straight or wavy hair. I really only draw the ENDS of the curls, and layer those ends in rough half-circles next to and interlacing with each other like you would do with bird feathers. If I figure out how to post an image into a message on the forum, I'll post an example (hobbit) with curly, curly hair I drew. Falcon has curly hair in my Wayfarer's album, but it's not as extreme an example, a bit more subtle.

The only thin I've ever used is White-Out *blush* I'm afraid it clumps, leaves streaks, and is raised from the paper. It doesn't cover perfectly, but it's pretty good for office work.

*jump* Ouch! His arm's gone!!!

Hehehehe, you hate drawing her hair, but it's still fabulous!

I like the sketch, too! ^_^ Though she looks more pensive/wary than sad to me.

*jaw drop* Wow! She's lovely! The color(s) you chose for the bg sky really compliment her very well. ^_^

Oh, and BTW -- *hearts for eyes at Boba*!!!

@Foxeye = Yeah, I meant iPad. =P

@Wildfire = Yeah, the Wal-Mart employee didn't even know what a tablet was! Thy thought it was a brand name for an e-reader. *Rolls eyes*
I think I've seen the Bamboo Pen on Walmart.com, but I didn't see where it said how big the screen of it was. And I *still* have yet to find a store that can actually show me a tablet in person! As for the touch-screen comp I'm mulling over, it's not too much more than a regular laptop computer with it's amount of RAM and memory, so not *too* huge a risk by the time I replace my computer.

Interesting! Yeah, I do use pressure difference when drawing with a pencil, but haven't even begun trying out any computer programs more complex than Window's Paint, which I think in and of itself isn't designed to handle pressure sensitivity anyway! Yeah, Joselle rocks for that! But I more meant, even if I have a fabulous art tool, it won't do any good if I'm not a good *enough* artist to make it do what it should! =P

I actually ran into this on a trip trying to *find* tablets in the first place, funnily enough! (Of course, when we asked Wal-Mart "Do you carry tablets?" they said: "Sorry, no. These are the only two brands of e-readers we carry.") I had seen your posts about wacom, etc, and the idea of using a pen and screen to draw straight into the computer caught my imagination. I'm still going to check out that option, but if they don't come any bigger than iPods I'll probably pick a bigger slate over pressure sensitivity for my first one -- I'll no doubt end up upgrading to the pressure-stuff in time! :D

Oops, mental typo -- I meant total *computer* art newbie! (Of course I've drawn before, just on paper... doh.)

So did that explain anything, or are you even more confused now?  ;D

Both! XD

Seriously, this is really, super helpful. Being the total *nimrod* I am, I totally forgot to check and see what brand the one I saw was. What I can tell you is it had a 20 inch screen, looked like it was probably a "slate" (it was set up mounted on a wall of sorts, and had a conventional desktop pc keyboard plugged into it), has 4 GB of RAM and lots of memory... That's about as technologically detailed as I get! My sister is the closest we've got to a techno whiz in the family.

I don't have any idea if it has pressure sensitivity, but for *me* (being a total art newbie) that frankly, will probably not matter. An artist's tools are only as good as that artist, and I wouldn't know how to get those benefits out of goodies like that!

I *was* wondering, though, whether you could use a stylus (like you've talked about in posts for your tablet) or if it's heat-sensitive and only works for fingers. I think I'll never catch up with technology, but that's okay! I'll never be bored waiting for the next thing to come out! LOL.

I thought a tablet was a screen you hooked up to your computer and could use as a mouse substitute. Is that what this is? IT looks more like an actual computer itself. *so confused* Ahh, I'm so technologically challenged..!

I want one of those touch-screen-mouse computers! I tried it out at Wal-Mart on the display, pulled up Windows Paint to test-scribble, and found out how much fun it is to "finger paint" on! It even let me do TWO lines at once, with two different fingers! O_O So I'm in love, but it'll have to wait till the next time I'm replacing my computer. *grin*

Anyone else tried these or thought about 'em?

Art and Elfquest / Re: Wendy Pini (Elfmom) speaks on "The Final Quest"
« on: March 23, 2011, 12:05:19 PM »
Actually, the piece itself is a real treat! (I LOVE it!!!) I was frankly a little worried, having only read original quest so far, about how the art/characters might have changed for better or worse over the years, but in this screenshot it was instantly clear -- and by clear, I mean as clear as a forceful SEND -- that that is STILL our very selfsame Cutter-Tam (and Leetah, but Cutter *is* kinda central in the picture!)

I don't personally have any ties to it, no. I've tried searching and grubbing around on Google.com just for fun in case I could root up something you might've missed, but no cigar -- there's apparently a yahoo group for it, but the message history doesn't show any activity since 2009, and I can't find a link for the website newer than yours, so I'm *guessing* it's defunt. =( I could always be wrong, though!

These are all so great! I'm really impressed!!! :D

Interesting! It looks like, among whatever other things, that in the second sketch you would've been missing part of the wolf's head if that had been the actual picture when you were blocking it, and those rectangle lines had actually been the edges of the paper, am I right?

25
Heh, yeah I actually knew that piece of trivia! (For once, trivia I actually know!)

For some odd reason, I find it easier to draw the pictures smaller. When I do a full-page portrait of a face, for example, I find that it tends to skew out of proportion and just overall look really... weird. =P Something I'm hoping to improve with, but there you have it.
