Marut by Afke, colored by me!
by Berit
This is actually one of the first ones of these colored pictures I made... and didn't post it back then because I feel it takes away from Afke's fine drawing... I hope that isn't the case... did this somewhere around 2011, but never posted it anywhere before... even forgot about it! this was also one of my first tries at playing with light and shadow... still not sure if it looks bad or not... here is Afke's original linearts... http://www.elfquestfanart.com/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=2302
And about the picture, I always imagined Afke's drawing of being the first time when Marut woke up being the Marut we know today... one who had survived alone in the wilderness long enough to forget where he came from, not even remembering why he was alone... I hear same things happen to homeless people... some of them still young, but on the streets too long to remember anything from their past, some even forgetting their own name...

Berit, this is awesome! I think the soft coloring works really well with my linework; I think you've improved the picture, actually!

But you've picked such natural colors, that it almost looks like a photo.

Sorry, Berit, I'm going to have to agree with Afke on this one! I like the color scheme you chose and the way you have the light stream in over him. It is very convincing as a morning light illo, when the evil glowing sphere of optic violence rises over the horizon. The play of light and shadow is also well done, especially in the face. Leaving the background a little simple was, in my opinion, a good choice because early morning sunlight can have that sort of effect. I'm glad you posted it!

I am also glad that you posted it! The light is so soft and makes me really hope it will be a good awakening after all he's been through. So, so lovely!

I wish I saw what you did, but the only thing I notice is the strange thing that the colors make it seem as if he is levitating and not in contact with the furs below... it seriously bothers me! hahah! Ambefox! You really know what sun feels in the morning! evil glowing sphere of optic violence! hahah! darn! you made my day!...

He does look shiny and new. The peaceful expression is highlighted by the lighting and I think you both did great. He looks so very . . . personable.
