The third incarnation is disembodied and floating, connoting the ethereal nature of elfin lives. The straight, rather severe line between middle and old age is indicative of... well, take your pick: the difference between maturity and old age, the time jump in KOTBW, the transition from Wendy doing most of the art and passing on to other illustrators, and the list goes on.
The versions are presented in reverse order (Western language is read left to right) as a challenge to the viewer to look at things a different way. Which, if you think about it, is what EQ was originally all about. |

While most of the other calendar entries are then/now, Pike in August is three-staged. This illustration portrays Pike as carefree and young ("days of barefoot freedom" from the old Rush lyric) in his forest home, then at his maturity in the Two-Edge forged armor in the straight lines of troll-hewn stone. These two are separated by a line of green foliage.

Nice to see Pike taking a whole calendar spot for a change. I love this picture, though the transition from one age to another is a bit awkwardly done.
