Leetah, now and then

I was inspired by Mirror's painting to re-do this old Leetah-picture. The old picture certainly wasn't my first try of an elf either, but at least my very first experience with digital colouring. Hm, I find the old one so hideous :-[

Lord, it took sooo long to get her nose acceptable. Don't look at it too closely :P (or her lips). If I would uploud the event-file, it would be 10 min, for sure.

The old picture was done in Photoshop (CS4 or 5, I think) and the newer one in OpenCanvas5

Really the only thing I could suggest with the old illo is that the nose is too long for the face. Both illos would likely benefit from having the topknot in Leetah's hair moved back more on her head; as it is, it looks more like it's sitting almost directly ontop of her head as opposed to more of a highset ponytail. The nose on the new Leetah is really well done, but I think it's a little too strong or large for the character; she tends to have a rather dainty, petite nose. The shading on the new Leetah is also much better, giving her face more depth and life. I think it could use more highlights at the forehead, cheeks, nose tip, and chin to enhance it even more. The hair color I think is more accurate in the new Leetah illo. What I miss, however, from the original is the highlights: the jewelry has more of a natural sheen to it and having the eyes whiter with the gleam in them would really accent them more. You have improved - wonderful job!

Her nose was really a pain. My elves tend to have longer noses than in Wendy's works, but that's just my "style". However, it was difficult to find something for the picture I could live with. I guess, the reason is, that I didn't really pay attention to proper anatomy in the sketch. It's ok for the sketch, but it became difficult to work on for colouring.
Well, for the head-piece, I assumed it's some sort of counterpart to Cutter's chief-lock :)

I try to do without shiny effects for eyes, especially when the general colours are rather damp. The shiny-ness sticks a bit out IMO.

Thanks for your critique, though  :)

Oh I just love the way you draw eyes, there's something intense about them. Love your warm colors as well. And it's definitely an improvement compared to the old one, also in terms of style. I think you're defining your own style more and more and that is pretty wonderful. For me the nose might be not so Wendy-Leetah-like but much more your own style, so I would have actually thought you did the nose as it is on purpose. I have to agree about the head size and position of the top knot or whatever that is called though. Just everything seems a bit too small. But please, keep the art coming! :D

Lots of changes, well done!

I don't think it's necessarily a case of "nose too long". It's one way of getting the proportions in the face right (then you can move her lips up as well, and may I say gorgeous lips!). But if I hold my hand over the picture and view just her face, it looks right. I think she could use a bigger skull on the back of her head. I have the feeling I'm missing something there, I mean she has really thick curly hair, and there doesn't seem to be enough of it.
(Talking about the new picture here btw.)

I don't mind the stronger nose on the new Leetah illo, and I agree with Treefox that there's something more personal when someone uses a style unique to them. I'm sure I could never quite get any of Wendy Pini's proportions just right. You certainly do a better job with lips than I do. And I can see and understand now you were going for a more muted tone with the new illo, and again, it looks just fine. Look forward to seeing more art from you.
