First Green

Wooohooo! I actually finished one of the ideas that I have been carrying around with me for ages. When this challenge started, this idea popped up into my mind immediately. I image that this is the deer that Kahvi left behind in the holt of the Wolfriders after she met Aroree and flew away with her to the Sun Village. I wasn't sure if Littletrill had killed the deer, but I re-read the part and it wasn't mentioned. So I imagine it has been left behind. All alone in green growing woods for the first time in its life. I think this would be very scary for a deer that has known nothing but snow for all its life. This is why I wanted to make the wood really dark to give it a very threatening feeling.
I sketched the deer with pencil traditionally, scanned it and did all the coloring with Gimp. I'm still struggling with it, but at least we stopped beating each other up and started communicating. C/C is welcome, but I am still in the digital coloring early learning state.

What a well picked moment! It's like you were still thinking in the calendar's theme. The feeling you want to communicate is definitely there, those woods look intimidating.

*blink blink* What? *blink* You said... early learning stage? But the colors are magnificent! Such detail on the greenery, and I know that couldn't possibly be fully due to pencil sketch for those shapes. I loooove the texture of the bark on the trees, as well! In the way of critisism, the deer's muzzle looks just a *bit* tall vertically speaking, making it look a little bear-like, but it's possible I've just got the idea of face-shape for this variety of deer/elk/whatever wrong... You can just hear that poor animal's heartbeat! Well done. This is such a beautiful piece!

Wow, that's two fast comments! Thank you very much.
If you knew how I'm using Gimp, you'd understand that I'm still quite a learner. I worked with a total of three layers here, it even that was a complete mess. I am still unable to isolate single aspects of my drawings to make the background coloring easier. So now all the colors are on one layer. Concerning the muzzle, I think you are absolutely right! I should have narrowed it down more. It's just too square. Thanks for the advice! |

What a lovely idea! I don't think anyone ever thought of that poor animal again. You're right, it must have been terrified, which your pic conveys perfectly.

I really hoped you would approve of this one! I would very, very much like to do an artwork with you. The only problem is that I am currently struggling with getting the EQ calendar pics done first. Would it be OK to do afterwards? Because I'd really love to!
