2010 Fan Art Calendar:  MAY

Redlance's plantshaping powers finally emerge... I always imagined this as a far more emotional self-discovery than depicted in the comics; perhaps it was the novelization that gave me the idea, though I misplaced the book long ago.  Yet Redlance struggled so long with feelings of inadequacy and disappointment, I feel his coming into his own must have been a moment of sheer joy.

Medium: Gouache on textured Claybord (Aquabord)

Congratulations with winning and getting into the calendar, your entry is so worth it! Background is wonderful, it's so detailed! I love characters expressions, especially Redlance's - i can feel his joy very well! It makes me want to clap my hands in excitement and share his happiness!

Woo, Kelly!  I am so glad you stuck with the gouache; your technique has come so far!  Wonderful mastery of value to create depth in the background - not to mention that the background rocks!  I don't know why some artists hate doing backgrounds - I love adding all the details that the viewer only discovers upon closer inspection.  It looks like you do, too.

There is so much warmth and richness here in the hand-made quality of real paint and board with the hand of the artist in loving evidence.  Match that with the subject and emotions portrayed here and it just works perfectly.

This truly looks like it is from the Golden Age of Illustration, when real artists weren't afraid of gouache.  ;-)

Joyrider, I so agree with you; this picture really does Redlance's moment justice. The way you painted his eyes shows that he truly loves the flower he just helped growing. Very touching piece!

Thanks y'all :)  This was my first play with gouache (for some reason I tend to use calendar entries to test new forms of media) and I ♥ it to bits, but I still need *lots* of practice.  This one certainly took approximately a billion years, since one of the blessings (or curses) of gouache is you can actually go over areas you dislike (at least you can when painting on claybord; it might muck up on paper) -- if you could do an archaeological dig on this painting you'd prolly shudder at what you found! ;)

I loved the colors when I first saw it, and then when I heard you did this in gouache, I was even more impressed. Beautiful work.

Oh, I'm so glad that I can finally see a bigger version of this. The background is awesome!
Actually, one of my ideas for the calendar was exactly that scene. I just couldn't get it out on paper. But I definitely think your version turned out better than anything I could have made.

This is really spectacular, and I'm even more impressed to find out that it's gouache!  ALL. THAT. DETAIL.  I admire your patience and sense of concentration. :)  The emotion of the scene is just wonderful too -- this was definitely a moment that deserved this treatment.

Redlance and Nightfall are two of my favorite characters, and I love the idea of this scene being used for the calendar. The sheer ecstasy on Redlance's face, the detail of plant he's shaping and the wonderfully done background, the expression on Minyeh's face, the subtle yet rich coloration...all just perfect. I love the way you draw the hands - delicate, elegant, yet sturdy. I'm envious.

You did this with gouache?!? Mamma mia. Even more impressive!

This is such a sweet picture, beautiful colors, wonderful composition, and the detail is just amazing!

The usually oh-so-forgotten Minyah should get a prize for best supporting character in this years calendar, by the way. She's snuck her way into the background both in yours and in Foxeye's pictures ;)

I will get this post out, dangit.  I've tried and failed several times to post here, because while this is one of my favorites, I haven't found the right words for it.

I love the flower most of all...the strong dark blues that give way to the warm and life-filled greens. It's such a unique coloring style...crisp and yet flowing at the same time. I'd love to have flowers drawn in this style all around my bedroom walls.

Redlance has much the same crisp feel to him as well...I love his hair (especially above his headband) and his body language and his expression.

I love the rocks underfoot and the little tufts of green grass. The overall "feel" of it.

And of course, I love her majesty, Minyah. ^_^  She's just a badass, scrappy little farmer woman.

(Oh, and Nightfall's cute too. But who can notice Nightfall with that plant and Minyah around?)
