2010 Fan Art Calendar:  NOVEMBER

I finally hit on an idea for this year's theme when it was mentioned in the EQFA calendar thread that depicting a character doing something they love might be fitting; and when I was rereading through a whole lot of the comics in order to refresh my view of some of the characters.

It struck me that I liked the fact that Pike seemed to grow into his role of storyteller and howl-keeper over the course of the series, finding his place in that niche.  And, it also struck me that in any society, telling stories about the past is one of the main ways that children are helped to find a place in their culture, and certainly wolfriders, with their love of stories and Howls, are no exception to that. (Did I mention that I work in a folklore dept? ;-) )

How very Pike! I love the sketchy lines of the "story", and the leaf framing.  And your wolves are especially fantastic, as per usual! This pic even makes me nostalgic... :D

I love it! How could I not, Pike's one of my faves and you've pictured him at his best. I also love how you've made his story appear, and in those brown tones of the leaves it really seems the past.

You are another artist I can count on to "push" the theme past the obvious choices.  Last year, with your four non-magic users in a magic calendar: brilliant!

This could easily have been the cover if I hadn't twisted Joselle's arm.  The way you've linked Pike finding his place with his stories helping the cubs find theirs; this is a wonderful example of the theme.

You always have such good solid line work and drawing skills, too.  I especially like this wolf.  He really looks like he fits in the EQ world - you are getting to be a pro at looking at real wolf references and stylizing them enough so they "fit."

I love you style very much!
Wonderful idea and colouring! Pike is a great character, and i think his place in the tribe couldn't be portrayed better than you did! Beautiful picture, it gives me nostalgic feeling.

As I mentioned on the forum as well: This might be my personal favorite canon piece from you. Another brilliant blend of character-likeness and your own style (which I adore). Pike finding his place as storyteller is a brilliant idea. The composition is perfect, your wolves most lovely as always.
One question: why did you choose Tyleet and Venka for listeners? (Not that I mind, but you could as well haven chosen Ember or Pool or Sust, etc.)

Thank you, everyone!

When I was developing this idea, I did indeed think about making it Ember and Suntop and other kids in the Sun Village (i.e. hearing about their wolfrider roots), or about the later kids.  I think I finally decided on Tyleet and Venka because, in my reading, I came across that wonderful moment where Venka says to Ekuar, "The wolfriders finished my upbringing. They did not teach me to hate."

So, to round out the idea of "finding one's place", I wanted to show a glimpse of Venka absorbing the Way of the wolfriders as part of HER personal development.  Also, I guess, in a way I think of Tyleet as one of the least wolfridery of the wolfriders, so I wanted to hint at the idea that she, too, grew up on stories of great hunts and adventures, and that's a part of her, too.

Ahh! Thank you for the back story! I love to hear those, actually. I just thought you might have had a good reason to show these particular two cubs. Thanks for sharing!

Do you ever get tired of hearing what beautiful work you do, Sgaana? I hope not because, this is just gorgeous. You drew Pike perfectly (although his hand seems a little flat - not that I'm saying much, look how I struggle with drawing them!) as well as the other characters. Your use of color and shading is brilliant, as always. The wolves are just great; I'm envious.

Very good picture. Indeed, only the Pike can be a guardian of memory? Very cool!
