Done as an art-trade for River Twine, for Joan. From left to right, we see Newt (belongs to Melanie), Otter (belongs to Arthur) with his wolf-friend Splash, Crackle (belongs to Joan) on her wolf-friend Muddypaws, and Fadestar (belongs to Linda).

Black Prismacolor pencil linework, Copic marker coloring, some effects in Photoshop. Snapping turtle reffed from various photos (... and his shell *still* isn't quite right *dissatisfied*); wolves reffed from various photos at Monty Sloan's site (http://www.wolfphotography.com).

And the further notes that didn't fit above:

This was an idea that I'd had hanging around for a while, ever since a snapping turtle that big swam just under my paddle while I was kayaking in some river shallows a couple of summers ago. Turtles amuse me, anyway; I find it charming how they sit there and open their mouths so wide when they want to warn you off. Of course, snapping turtles can seriously back up that threat-display! Anyway, I loved the idea of doing a piece that would show how giant one would look in relation to elf children.

(Man, it's annoying how little you're allowed to write either in the notes or in the comments... :P )

The ground was kind of meant to suggest the stony banks of a glacial river; I'm not real thrilled with how it came out, but, oh well.

*is amused*
Doesn't look like they're scared though, of course they're too curious being (elf) kids and all. ;D The wolves seem to be more cautious, but their toes seem to be in more danger as well!

Of course Otter is wearing clothes!  ...Shoes count as clothes right?

If I were a guy, I personally would not want to be anywhere in the vicinity of a snapping turtle with any... dangly bits waving around, if you know what I mean.

AHAHAHA! the turtle is just too funny! I know how it feels like being near turle who is trying to intimidate you by doing that odd yawning expression... and truth to be told, there really is something that makes you think twice about getting near it at that moment!... and about the dangly bits... I know what you mean... *shiver* that's just too scary to even think about!...

Oh, yes, I can attest to one that large, even larger. I used to go on turtle rescues and wildlife counts. Those suckers can get very, very BIG. I even rescued one trying to cross an extremely busy 5 lane road in the middle of suburbia. A young mother and child ran up, and I had to warn them off. That turtle was angry and ready to strike; that kid looked mighty tasty, I'm sure. The turtle was fast and would actually spin and glare at each of us. I was able to grab the turtle with their distraction, cram it into a large box I just happened to have, and take him to my vet's office to be released at a local lake.

So, of course, I LOVE this illo. It's well done, I think you did a terrific job on the stony shore, and the turtle is perfect. Certainly brings back a lot of memories (yes, I still have all my fingers and toes)...

As always, you know I love how you draw animals! I especially got a kick out of Crackle's expression in this piece. Oh, and don't worry too much about the stones, it looks good.
