Title: Quarterly art contributions (share your ideas Here).
Post by: silentleaf on March 11, 2014, 11:42:52 AM
Hey my Elf drawing friends! I'm starting the idea ball rolling!

I'd love to see you all do the 4 seasons using the male elves!

That is a great idea SILENTLEAF !  I so need to work on my males in any sense; and have needed some inspiration.  Are there themes that came to mind ?  Cards, holidays, iconic representations ?  Or were you just thinking of any male elves  doing something "seasonal" together ?

 And   .   .   .  (my own self interest is showing here) ;

I would love to also see parents and children together of the chiefs. For example: I have never seen a picture of Rahnee and Prey-Pacer together.  In the timeline - just how many elf parents were around to see their cubs grow to full maturity?

Are the BoTC  novels considered canon in fandom today ?

Oh look at you full of good ideas! I was thinking of picking my boys out and decking them out in winter, spring, summer, fall... Lots of fur banana hammocks (just for maggie).  As a challenge I'd pick less odiously popular guys. Cutter, Rayek, Skywise, as much as I love them get alot of art love.

Tah-Marien, the stories that don't contradict the things said in the comics are canon. Like, for instance in the Two-Spear comics Two-Spear is there when Skyfire is born, therefore she cannot be older than him which the BoTC novels claim. However there is nothing to disprove that Rahnee survived the attack against the allo's, so one is free to accept that as canon.

Just my take on canon, the only place that canon is really something you have to follow is the calendar. Those rules were set already and they aren't going to change but as far as everyday artwork or challenges unless specified I would say anything goes.

So when someone adds a challenge they should make sure they specify canon and what exactly they mean by that when they post an idea, along with any other rules they have for the challenge. Otherwise why not delve into the murky waters of the elves we haven't see a lot of.

Personally I love the idea of interpreting Cutters ancestors even if things aren't quite canon.

I personally like to see broader themes, which we can chose how to interpret ourselves. Like "seasons" Silentleaf mentions, but no other specifics than that, and not really limitations (like canon or not). For me that gives more freedom to think about. I know others can get things done better with more specifics as you guys mention, but I'd like to see things varied so everyone can get inspired.

Perhaps we could divide the ideas in "themes" and "challenges"? A challenge could be more specific, like canon chiefs as parent + their child, while a theme could be something as simple like "water" (an example (http://www.rivertwine.com/collections.php?id=87) at RTH!), which to me is more inspiring.

@ STARTEAR  -  That is a very wide range of  "Maybe so, Maybe no".    Especially since there are not enough comics to cover all of the possibilities brought up in the BoTC novels yet.
I admit to loving only Most of those stories.   EX:   I can see how the recognition of Bearclaw and also how he found his new wolf-friend needed to be different for the ElfQuest universe and I loved what Wendy did with that scenario.

@ Maggie  -  Are we starting an Art Challenge ?  Maybe I do not understand what is being proposed here.

@  Afke  -   I like broader themes also.  I have just been very curious as to  "how"  and  "what"  is canon in the ElfQuest fandom circle.  And in this case; what the boundaries could be for a seasonal backdrop.  The idea of SILENTLEAF's caught my attention because - well - it's men !   (Let us hear it for raining men !)

@Tah-Marien I was just addressing your question about canon with my reply. I believe it is necessary for the calendar to reach a broad spectrum of fans but not necessary for everyday artwork or challenges.  ;D

@Silentleaf Are you running with this little idea of yours? I mean anyone can create an idea or challenge doesn't just have to be little old moi.  ;D We can totally run with quarterly art contribution 2014 - theme: Seasons. We just need to figure out a rule or two.

Sure why not! I may need help lol!
Title: Re: Quarterly art contributions (share your ideas Here).
Post by: Czarine on March 16, 2014, 09:39:40 AM
I too like broader themes, though any theme (be it broad or narrow) goes for me. I'd like to have a deadline to get a good kickstart! Nothing beats social pressure in getting things done.  ;D

To me, canon-enough art would be artwork with only canon characters (preferably in EQ world), even though the situation wouldn't be exactly canon.  Like, Bearclaw having a wrestling match with Kahvi in the Sun Village, with Lord Voll as the referee. But, that's just my preference.  8)

Hey, my Elf friends.
Here is what I'm thinking. Pick one or more of your favorite male characters From Elf quest and create an image that represents one of the 4 seasons. IE (spring, Summer, Fall, winter).  I think two months is a decent amount of time for this challenge our deadline is May 31st.  I don't want to get to strict on guidelines for this challenge. If you guys have suggestions please feel free to make them, this is a totally fluid project!

Oh if you feel like it tell us what season you are working with ( it would be nice to have a full set of the seasons)

I'm totally into the movie frozen right now so don't be surprised if you see magic sparkles in my drawing...

Hugs and Dreamberries to you all!

Really lovely idea! Let's push some art of male elves! Yay!
Not that I lack ideas for EQ fanart, but I still like the concept. I think I want to participate and tackle summer.

Man, by now I actually wish I had seen Frozen. Just the trailer wasn't very appealing to me...
But let it go just won't let go... GAH! My poor vocal chords.  :lol

I think I am definitely going for character who usually received not so much attention. Haven't decided completely yet.

Post by: Tah-Marien on March 19, 2014, 11:06:28 AM
I do not know if I can finish something by March 29th -   but I am going ahead anyway !

Get out your umbrella's  fan tribemates.  It looks like it will be a fun year.  Hmm  .  .  .   it is a Crow Moon  this month for spring.  I think I can work with that.
Title: Re: Quarterly art contributions (share your ideas Here).
Post by: Maggie on March 19, 2014, 05:21:36 PM
@Tah-Marien I'm pretty sure the deadline Silentleaf set was May 31st.  ;)

I'm in and I will do Autumn...crunchy leaves under your feet and still days warm enough for banana hammocks.  ;D

;D Great! I already made a tiny sketch at work yesterday. Hopefully I can get started on the real thing this weekend. There is going to be a lot of elvin skin!

Now I am wondering if silentleaf will pull off a winterish banana hammock. I am sure you could do it, girl!
Title: Re: Quarterly art contributions (share your ideas Here).
Post by: Treefox on March 20, 2014, 01:09:58 PM
I am really having a hard time getting the Elfquest proportions to work. Ah, shoot, it will be my own style anyway! Rough sketch doesn't look half bad so far, rather cute.
Title: Re: Quarterly art contributions (share your ideas Here).
Post by: Wildfire on March 22, 2014, 06:34:37 AM
So the theme is 4 seasons with male elves (in a banana hammock). I like it! :D

I'll definitely contribute, I'm not too sure which character I'll draw yet though

I'll see if I can squeeze in one too, and if I can, it will be Spring.

so cool! I totally participate! ^^
Title: Re: Quarterly art contributions (share your ideas Here).
Post by: Tah-Marien on March 26, 2014, 09:34:48 AM
Totally found a pose to work with, so I am getting started.  My theme is:  Full Crow Moon  (when)  .   .    .     . "The cawing of the crow signals the end of Winter."   So I do not know if that is spring or winter, but the drawing will be be black and white - I might play with color - but maybe not.

It was/is hard to find a sensual pose, that is not feminine, for a guy.  I wanted strength and beauty without .   .   .  well, it is hard to explain.  But anybody that has drawn Elfquest knows how hard it is to balance male beauty and macho - ism.

Are banana hammock's a must here?...
Title: Re: Quarterly art contributions (share your ideas Here).
Post by: Treefox on April 15, 2014, 12:57:57 AM
Not yet!  ;) No, the banana hammock has become sort of a thing since the pinup calendars, but we take fully clad elf lads as well.  ;D

I'd like to do fall or winter, (that depends on how many fall or winter ones we have, I'll do the one that gets less attention) but sorry! I'd prefer not to draw nudity again! (the calendar was too much for me, actually)...
Title: Re: Quarterly art contributions (share your ideas Here).
Post by: silentleaf on April 16, 2014, 09:59:56 AM
No need to draw nudity! That is  purely a choice! I'm SO thrilled by the turn out so far! thank you all soo much for your contributions! We still have over a month so No rush! I know people are cooking up their calendar submissions now too!

Please feel free to Pm me with Ideas or requests for our next quarterly submission!
You guys all rock my socks!

Okay  .   .   .  *big blushes here*   I am not too good with modern slang -  I thought a "banana hammock" was just another term for "junk"  you know;  a cylinder and two spheres.

Well  .   .  .  now I know.   *sly smile*  But my first quarterly contribution will be modestly nude.  Silly me.

I've already done two sketches: one for summer and one for spring. I have plans for autumn and winter. I hope to have all done by next weekend, at least shaded. Coloring takes me a lot longer, so at least I can post black and white. I've also answered the call for elves that just don't get much love or time in the limelight. I intentionally chose characters that are rarely drawn; I just hope I did them justice and viewers can figure out who they are.

I finished the final sketch Monday and now I need to ink all four of them. I hope to post them by this weekend. I'm also going to try and finish the art I did for the "Every Picture Tells a Story" calendar and post then as well. Better late than never, I suppose.
Title: Re: Quarterly art contributions (share your ideas Here).
Post by: jaRf on April 23, 2014, 01:54:42 PM
I also had to look up the banana hammock, though I already suspected something like that. ;D

... I'd pick less odiously popular guys. Cutter, Rayek, Skywise, as much as I love them get alot of art love.
Please be aware that there is no such "Rayek got enough (art) love". ;)
Though I admit that a bunch of other characters should receive more love.

It sounds like a funny idea. Oh well, I guess I already have something silly enough to draw. But I'm likely stressed til beginning of May so end of May is a short deadline for me.
Furthermore the idea would include a female if that is possible. Moreover it would contain on of these "odiously popular" guys. More or less. It was just something silly that popped into my mind. I might have more ideas, more or less for other seasons, even other characters but not til end of May.

(Had my first 70% spare day today so I feel a sudden rise in wanting to be creative.)

I agree with Silentleaf; this is a challenge, but mostly used for inspiration so everyone can see new stuff here. Don't feel like you're limited! Just put your idea on paper as you see fit. :)

Arrr! It's horrible. Ideas start to hit me but my hands seem so clumsy and slow to make them reality. Besides that the usual lack of spare time. I will still try it. :)

Anyone wanna try doing a style swap? For instance,  drawing Cutter the way he would look wearing Rayek's costume and hair style, or maybe even pretending to be Leah if you want to go the drag route. :)

Someone on DA did this iirc. But yes, it sounds definitely like an interesting and funny idea.

I actually stopped working today and will now get on to the "quarterly work". I did some parts of it already but silly ideas kept storming at me and I will have a lot to do to finish this in time. I hope my tablet will aid me in some tasks where a mouse just doesn't get the job done. Besides that it is an exercise in terms of emotional portraits for me.
Title: Re: Quarterly art contributions (share your ideas Here).

Ooo, I really like the idea. But the style swap should be within the EQ universe?
Title: Re: Quarterly art contributions (share your ideas Here).
Post by: Starskimmer on May 12, 2014, 07:33:08 AM
I was initially thinking to keep it in the EQ universe but if you have a specific idea who am I to nay-say? It's a creative prompt, not a contest after all. Rules open to interpretation :)
Title: Re: Quarterly art contributions (share your ideas Here).
Post by: Treefox on May 12, 2014, 08:48:01 AM
And it would be a canon character after all. I woke up this Saturday morning and had this image in my head! I think I should really get this on paper. I think it would just fit so awesomely style-wise!

I am enjoying the season theme, so - I think I will just stick to the Seasons and men this year, at first, since I thought it was an all year thing; so I have plans for a least one more.

I have found it very inspirational SILENTLEAF to have this thread.  Thanx for starting it.  Anybody with an art block can look at others people's wanderings and maybe find a spark of fun to share.

I just need less workstress, less clumsy hands / more practise in doing things, more experience how to handle the tablet correctly. I got to finish mother's birthday present, fix my car and lots of other things. But somehow I still hope to finish this in time.

By the way, Maggie and silentleaf, what do you think about making a folder for the quarterly challenge after all? I heard some requests about finding the results collected in one place. When it's posted it will appear on the front page first anyway, right?
Current way of posting is fine for me, but it is difficult to find the entries for people who don't visit every day.
Title: Re: Quarterly art contributions (share your ideas Here).
Post by: Afke on May 16, 2014, 07:46:21 AM
I was thinking about giving each challenge their own thread in the forum. Then people can find back the discussions better too. People who post their art in the gallery can post the link in the matching thread. The way I see it, posting the pictures in your own folders might also help guiding people to your other art.

Autumn is done, I'm nearly done with summer and winter, spring I'll try and have completed by next weekend (drew myself into a corner with that one). I'd post ASAP, but I don't have access to a working scanner at the moment. My all-in-one is missing its power cord; can't seem to find it anywhere and I'm even having trouble locating a stupid replacement. Next weekend, I'll have access to one - a really GOOD one - so I'll try and post then.

HELLO my Elf LOVES! this challenge is drawing to a close. So I will be picking something new to work on! This does not However mean you can not continue to create images for this challenge. Please upload your art the new challenge gallery that our super great admins have created for us!

Now On the next challenge!
Anyone wanna try doing a style swap?

I was wondering what you guys would like of doing shadow cut out profiles?
Something like this ? http://img1.etsystatic.com/001/0/5704457/il_fullxfull.358622801_2lc5.jpg (http://img1.etsystatic.com/001/0/5704457/il_fullxfull.358622801_2lc5.jpg)

Pick a art style you have never drawn in before and draw your favorite character in that style.
Example :  Skywise  created  to look like cut glass.

what do you boys and girls think?
I am leaning toward the swap styles or style I've never used before.

Gime your input!

So I think we are going to do a challenge where we will be drawing in a style we have never done before!  I'd love to set up people in pairs to give each other their style! if we don't have enough I will just assign some styles!

I'm going to say august 30th as a deadline (remember this is when we would like submissions in by but really its just a guide line to get peoples creative juices flowing.

I cant wait to hear from you all thank you again to all the people that are working on or have made a submission! You all inspire me to create THANK YOU FOR THAT!

I still love the style swap idea! I didn't realize this could mean drawing the elves in  a different style, like say superheros or Simpsons style. This could also be really, really interesting. I still have an idea for swapping basically costumes with another non-EQ character. I think I will do that one anyway. :)

I was going to say this would be a challenge for me, because if I actually possessed the skill to draw like someone else, I would be doing it!

However, thinking about it more, it would probably be a really good exercise to try to recreate some else's style. Now, if I could only get an idea of what to draw.

Haha, actually, I liked the previous topic and the new one! Just lacking the time, as usual... Would so much like to contribute something to both. Ah well, we'll see... I still have to do my calendar entry as well.
Still, I do love the ideas here so far!

I even already did a sketch for the style swap theme. Will it ever evolve to a full-fledged pic? I have no idea...  :-\

Sooo I went ahead and finished mine  ;D I wanted to give it more thought and work but nooo, it was the kind of idea that got stuck in my head and demanded to be drawn with the stubborness of Petalwing, you know?  :D I can post it already or must wait 'til the deadline? It's my first try at the challenge so forgive me if the questions sound dumb  ;)

Done! And yay, looking forward to see yours :)
Is it okay to submit more than one entry? I'd like to pick out a "favorite" from each elf tribe (maybe even humans if I get around  :D) and see what comes out of it. I want to draw more things EQ!  :)

Oh man, I loved the style swap thing, but I can see how it won't appeal to everyone. Disney villains is a sure hit though, I'll have to come up with something for that one :D

I have ideas for the Disney villian thing (although Christina already swiped a villian I was considering!), but it made me consider something else even BETTER (for me, anyway). Will try and get to that when I can.

Yep, Christina chose two pretty cool villains.  ;D
Really, looking back at Disney history, there have been a couple of rather uninteresting ones, too...

Disney has an entire buffet of uninteresting characters. It's the few really good ones that are so memorable.

So true! Actually, during the world cup soccer match, I started a sketch for the style swap idea. Let's see if I can get at least that one finished.
And then tackle Disney + calendar contribution.  :o Not too realistic, I'm afraid.

the great thing is there can be different elves in the same villain attire! I don't care! Just give me yummy art to enjoy! <Greedy> I know.

I'm working on the Disney villian, and because my original idea was taken, it just led me to an even better one (again, just one I think I can do do better with). I hope I can do a decent job on it because I can't stop laughing at the idea of it! I told my brother and he thought it was hilarious.

I just finished inking my first one and I should have it done soon. It'll likely be black and white to start with since I can finish those so much faster. I think I pulled off my idea really well; I laugh at it everytime I look at it!

Still not finished with my stuff cause of being overly busy with everything. At least things seem to shift to less horrible. Artwork is half done, I was a bit stuck with drawing braids. I hope to have some spare time for it in about 1 week. Then I also have to start with the main calendar art. :shocker:

Something of that must have arrived :). Still kept busy up to the pointy eartips in life but I continued with the work on the quarterly art (well in my case it isn't actually quarterly anymore ::) ).

Finished my first, but now I have to see if I can get my scanner to work with my laptop. For whatever reason, my desktop computer will not acknowledge the internet. Working on my second which I hope to have done soon. These things are both hilarious...well, at least I think so. Meanwhile, those portraits for the calendar...

Good luck, JaRF; I know what it's like to be extremely busy!

As I wrote in calendar topic, I won't get things done for the calendar but at least with the challenge from ... ehm spring? ... I got progress. Well, the whole thing grew beyond one image anyway (my fault?) so it ate more time than planned. I keep doing work at it irregularly but this is mainly due to work stress. But at all progress is quite okay and I am satisfied with some parts already. It is also a lot of practice for me, and that sometimes feels tough cause I don't have the routine here.

I am just happy you felt inspired to draw! that is the most important part of the challenges.

It's in the gallery but actually not due to the upload size limit so I put an external link there.

Oh.
