Title: 2017 EQ Fan Calendar Guidelines
Post by: Maggie on April 04, 2016, 12:32:00 PM
The theme for the 2017 Elfquest Fan Art Calendar is: Contrasts

**Please see the list of Taken Characters/Contrasts at the very bottom of this post before contacting me with your selections**

**Also can we please try to avoid any major Final Quest spoilers in our submissions. I (for one) haven't read any of the Final Quest**

Submissions for the 2017 Calendar are being accepted:
April 4th, 2016 through October 31st, 2016

THEME

Submitted artwork should represent the theme "Contrasts”.

Day/Night, Young/Old, Good/Evil, Warriors/Healers, Starsong/Wolfsong - the Elfquest saga offers many studies in contrasts.

DETAILS

•You may use any two main characters in your submission as well as several secondary characters if you feel your submission warrants them.

•You will be required to PM Maggie to let her know which two main characters you will be using in your submission and also what type of contrast you are planning to represent (please do not post a message to the board, only send a PM. Messages in the thread regarding characters and contrasts will not be accepted).

•Please do not begin your submission until you hear back from Maggie. She will post a list of taken characters and contrasts so that we all know what is still available. This will help to ensure the calendar submissions are as varied as possible.

•You will be asked to update Maggie in July with your progress. This will help to determine if we have enough entries for the calendar. If at any time you feel you cannot continue to participate just send a message. There won’t be any hard feelings.

•You may submit up to three entries for the calendar but before you contemplate that second or third entry you must first finish and submit one entry to Maggie.

GROUPS

•You may work in groups of two if that makes things easier for you. Please let me know who you will be working with when you sign up.

•How you work in your group is totally up to you. One of you may supply a sketch for the other to ink and colour or you may work together to complete the scene. It doesn’t matter so long as you both agree.

CONTENT

•Entries must be original artwork created specifically for the calendar. The use of photos or "borrowed" art for backgrounds is not allowed.
•Entries must not be available for the general public to view online until the okay is given for general sharing. Before then, any entries found online in any form (thumbnails, crops, etc.) will be disqualified and removed.
•Canon Elfquest characters (of any race) only. No what-if characters (i.e., Worldpool).
•PG-13 or under.

FORMAT

•All entries should be in full color, with some type of a background.
•Size: 11"x 8.5" (pictures must be landscape oriented - wider than they are tall)
•Resolution: 3300 x 2550 pixels (11" x 8.5" at 300dpi)
•File format: JPEG/PNG format only

HOW TO SUBMIT

•When you are ready please email your full-sized entry to Maggie. Please PM Maggie when you have an entry ready to be submitted.

•Entries must be received by midnight CST, October 31, 2016.

Include the following:

•Title (Required):  Title of your submission.  Titles will be included on the calendar.
•Artist Credits (Required):  Will be included on the calendar.  Your real name or preferred artist's credit name.
•Email (Required)

CREDIT

•The artist credit and the email listed with your entry will be used for credits on the calendar/website.

PUBLISHING

•The twelve winners will be chosen by a panel of judges (TBD).

•The finished calendar will be available for download at elfquestfanart.com. In addition, the calendar will be published at Elfquest's Red Bubble shop (hopefully).

QUESTIONS

•Any questions about the calendar may be asked and answered on this thread or PM Maggie.
•If you don't know what this is all about, check out the current and past Fan Art Calendars here:  http://www.elfquestfanart.com/calendar/ (http://www.elfquestfanart.com/calendar/)

Any hints on image-internal allocation? E.g. the landscape square half and half or total freedom how to do it?

I'm going to let you decide on how you would like to represent the contrast, if you want to do a half and half thing go ahead, totally up to the person submitting the work.

And...off topic but...

Can we all try not to reveal any secrets of the final quest in our entries. I haven't read any of it, and I'm sure some other people haven't either. So let's try and keep spoilers out of the calendar.  ;)

Ooh I might have to delurk for this one. Time to brush off my pointy ears and do another calendar entry.

Maggie, should we not use any new characters from Final Quest either, out of courtesy's sake?

Yes...please delurk.  ;D

Hmm, new characters...If you're taking Korafay I think everyone knows about her. Maybe message me with the new character you're thinking of and if I've heard of them, you can go for it.  ;)

I completely agree with you on this!! I have not read a single one!! Please don't spoil it more than what is on facebook (and no I don't read the ones talking about spoilers).  PLEASE!!!

Wow, the first entry is already finished?! How fast are people?

Not planning anything specific but would not-really-spoiling-anything-outfits from FQ be allowed?

Hmm nothing available that really moves me very much. Are the only choices what are listed?

If I could choose .... could I choose something like Leetah/Winnowill - day/night - healing/wounding?

or Timmain/Winnowill? Light/dark as well?

O.o
Contrasts? It offers everything you could imagine.

> Are the only choices what are listed?

Listed are just the combinations that are taken by people already.

> Leetah/Winnowill - day/night - healing/wounding?

If they're not yes listed, likely yes. Timmain/Winnowill is taken, though. And Timmain as "day, light" is already so, too. Well, maybe send Maggie a PM.
PS: Rayek offers a lot in terms of contrasting others. ;)

I would say that depends on your perspective, and your interests. lol.

Never really enjoyed drawing him. Just not my cup of tea for when I want to have fun and play. Besides I see a lot of him on this list as it is and if one cannot choose one that has already been taken, well then .... there ya go. ;)

I was going to send my current progress a week ago but I have a hard time using this site on my phone. Anyway, while working on my submission I tore my watercolor paper clean through! I don't know how to fix it where it won't show in the finished painting. So my question is can we submit mixed media? In the sense that I would cut out the characters place them on top of a new paper with some thin "board" between them to make them stand out and then do the same with foreground foliage, etc. I guess it would be like a shadow box 3D look. But I can get it put on a high quality print. So it would still be submitted flat. I don't know if it's okay to link to non-ElfQuest art just for an example of what I mean so I won't post a link unless it's okayed and my description didn't make sense.
Cheers!

I'm so sorry I wasn't able to reply to this sooner, I've had a couple of terrible months.

If you'd like to rework what you have as a kind of shadowbox that would be fine, so long as it's flat and fits the specs of the calendar. ;)

There's a lady door and a mister door. :P

You can find reference for him in the second series at the end when Blue Mountain collapses and Cutter is dragging him along to safety....at least I think you can. :P It's been awhile.

Depends on which Door you try to illustrate... The numb version, or the crazy version. The crazy one there are a lot of references of in the Forevergreen series.

I'm afraid I won't be able to get mine done. I have dedicated this year to get my house in order, because it's a big mess in which I can't concentrate on projects, I can't find the stuff I need, and I can't get things done. Basically I'm keeping all my projects on hold until my house feels good again.
Unless someone steps up and says "I can ink and color your sketch" I won't be able to participate. I don't have a sketch yet, but I promise to make work of it, if someone is willing to finish it.

Ah, I just postponed that tidy-up program. ;) But I know how you feel. It's acceptable currently here, but there are stressful times in life that let me neglect things and after a while a lot of paper starts to tower...

Maybe someone who already finished can help out? (Not sure when I'll submit. If everything proceed well maybe early October.)

No worries about me ("it's acceptable here", "early October"), I finished last weekend but wanted to give myself a little bit of distance to my own work to judge again, polish and probably submit this weekend. :)
I even started my tidy-up program. ;)

Well, I'd have additional ideas but these won't fit in the short remaining time and besides, I guess I'll be more busy with life during October.

Title: Re: 2017 EQ Fan Calendar Guidelines
Post by: jaRf on October 12, 2016, 02:08:32 AM
Silentleaf seems to be very eager to do some more art. ;)

From my side I am not sure if I'd be a reliable source of support these days (many things left to do). Besides, from a technical point of view I'd probably have to get myself into digital colouring / GIMP of pixel art. So I'd need some time to get myself into handling the pure technical side of it. Moreover one needs to check the other one's intentions and imaginations not to collide with your own way of applying colours. E.g. vivid colours vs. soft pastel tones, possible light sources, background and so on.
So I'd try only in emergencies.

What I'm going to do is wait until the first week of November, if I don't have enough entries and haven't heard from the people who signed up, giving some kind of explanation/asking for an extension then I'll come begging for help.

Sound like a plan?  ;D

Well, technically the calendar doesn't come out until January, so there's still time. I just prefer to get everything handed over to Mr. Pini before the holiday rush.

As usual you will find out at the very end of Dec/Early January. That's when the printed version usually comes out and the online calendar goes up here at the site. ;)
