Title: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Maggie on March 05, 2020, 10:19:45 AM
Alright, I wanted to start chatting about next years calendar. We have discussed some new ways of dealing with time, loss of interest, collaboration etc. so I think we're good there (I will post the official guidelines soon) but I was wondering about the theme.

Do you all want to submit ideas and vote as usual or should the theme be something that is discussed and decided by those who are participating?

Let me know your thoughts.  :)

I look forward to participating in the calendar, but am not great at thinking about themes.  :-\

Yeah, that was not remotely helpful.  Sorry.  :(

But yay that there shall be a 2021 calendar!  ;D

hmmmh, let me think.. I'd always love the theme of "creatures of Elfquest" but I bet Other would not be interested...

One I would like would be of the lesser known characters, ones that often don't get fanart made of them, but I think that might be too hard...

"Long friendships?" a calendar about the long friendships of some characters, there would of course be Cutter and Skywise, but that would also leave possibilities for more obscure characters, like Suntoucher and Toorah...

And if that is too sunny and dandy then "villains and enemies"!...

I like all of Berit's ideas, especially the less known characters. I had been thinking of a similar, "long friendships" theme myself. Though villains would be cool too!

I do like the creatures of EQ, they could of course have companions to make the calendar more appealing to some. I also like lesser knowns, in fact given the option I would probably never draw the most popular EQ characters.  ;D

Long Friendships is great too, although it would probably limit peoples imagination since the friendships that are the longest are also with the most popular characters. But if participants were willing to look beyond the norm then that would work.

Hero's and Villains would be cool. I was also thinking comedy as a theme could be quite amusing. We can all take a page out of Yavia's book.

I prefer a bit "abstract" themes so people can choose who to draw, or draw what they're most comfortable with. I like creatures, but I wonder if it may be too high of a threshold for some.
Haha, I like going for the non-popular characters too! There's still some I want to get into the calendar, though I often seem to fall back on trolls, just so there's some in there. ;D

I like comedy as well. It made me think of movie genres in general (not AU, I don't like that for the calendar), and the emotive portraits we've done earlier. We could combine it into something like "cliffhangers". DUN DUN DUUUUUUN. Where is the drama at its highest point? Or considering comedy; which is the point right before everyone bursts into laughter?

* blush* I'm ashamed now to be a kind of example for the calendar idea ... But I have to admit that I like to be known as the one with the funny pictures. They work best for me if the theme isn`t funny, so It might work great with Hero - Villain. Are there enough Villains..?

Maybe I have a funny idea too. I toss in something total different. Not a theme but a style.

Elfquest through the comics - Draw Elfquest figures in another comic style/art.

For example: Draw the characters (free choice) in their original inviorment but like Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Albert Uderzo, Hergé, Moebius or even Mangaka like Yoshitaka Amano, Rumiko Takahashi, Hayao Miyazaki or even Disney would do - oh, wait - could this be a copyrightproblem?
It might also be to difficult to fulfill and not loved because it's not original Elfquest Art but I absolutely love seeing Cutter with an "Asterix" nose or "Sailor Moon" Trolls  :lol

This reminds me of the 2006 theme "Elfquest Through the Ages" which was an *amazing* theme, I'd love to do something similar again! Shifting styles is difficult though but it would be a fun challenge.

Straight up comedy isn't my favourite, but that's mostly cause I'm not terribly funny lmao.
I agree with Afke that the more abstract themes are great. Creatures would be interesting.

I'm personally still really fond of the "The Colours of EQ" and "The Landscapes of EQ (This will include characters interacting with the landscape)" from the 2019 poll :D

I prefer drawing in my own style, especially when it requires the amount of effort the calendar deserves.
It could indeed pose a copyright problem if we want to be able to sell the calendar as the previous ones. We have permission for the EQ traits, but not the others. This might be fun for another challenge album though.

Haven't checked older polls yet, but you're right, Wildfire; there's bound to be some gems in there. :)

"Creatures of ElfQuest" would be really cool, assuming that it is okay to include elves in the images with the non-elf creatures.  Otherwise, it might seem more like a cartoon zoo calendar.  (Which sounds cute to me, but maybe not to everyone.)  Just need to make sure that it doesn't turn into 12 months of Nightrunner and Starjumper!  ;)

"Comedy" strikes me as a potentially daunting theme.  Humor is often personal and very difficult to pull off... especially in a single image.  A good theme would allow individual creators to strive for comedic images, should they choose, but making comedy a theme might limit participation.

I have mixed feelings on the "Lesser Known Characters" theme... just on the question of who judges who is lesser known.  For example, Jink is "lesser known" to me, since I never read her series, but probably does not count as "lesser known" to many others.  To accomplish something like this, I think one would need a list of characters that could be included or a list of characters that must be excluded.  Still, I like the spirit of the idea:  featuring characters not normally in the spotlight is a fun concept.  As I said, mixed feelings.

The mentions of movies and of different art styles made me think of a theme that may not appeal, but I'll suggest it anyway:  ElfQuest crossovers.  Set ElfQuest characters in other pop-culture content, like movies or comics... maybe emulating movie posters or something.  (The idea needs a little hashing, especially since there is the question of copyright.)
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Yavia on March 08, 2020, 08:02:56 AM
Creatures of Elfquest reminds me a little bit of the bonded theme. There may be lots of creatures, but the most I remember was the once that play a role in Elfquest like the boar Rayek kills or the herds or bonded animals of the elves. Or the sweet Maki/lemur sitting in the rain while Cutter and Skywise waiting for it to stop in a tree hole. There has been some cats as a pet. TL;DR I have no idea what animal to draw that's not a wolf, Elk, Hawk or Zwoot. With it's elffriend beside.

As for comedy it is individual. A friend of mine never understands the kind of humor I come up with. Also as Snakclaw says it is difficult to pull off. If I've been "forced" <- too strong word, I hope you understand what I mean - to draw comedy it is possible I have not a single idea even if anything goes.

Lesser known characters can be tricky to pinpoint. As I also don't know Jink, but I know she owns her own series she must been important. As for ShenShen she wasn't so important in the beginning but gets more spotlight later on. There will be some gardeners in Sorrows End or Rockshifters in the Blue Mountain off curse. But I don't think any wolfrider will make it into the calendar. A list could help there a lot I agree.
If it just was for the fanart there might be more possibilities but I don't know how to check how many fanart exists for someone. I do guess there might be lesser Fanart to Suntop than Ember.

Through the comics has a little connection to through the ages - that's right I see now and agree! Yeah, It was just a stupid idea, it come up with the little cameos from elves done by other artists in other media. And also the art to draw is more focused, not the theme. But I totally understand your reasons. To shift your own style is difficult. I tried to draw some and it is challenging to capture the style of another artist. Maybe I can call it out as a challenge here on Elfquestfanart? If you don't use characters or settings of the artists work there can't be a copyright problem for this site, can't it?
The movie posters as like "Star wars - a new hope"? Sounds very funny and really great for me but is non canon allowed for the calendar?

Colors of Elfquest sounds fun. For every place has his own Color Scheme. In my head I mix it with Landscapes of Elfquest a bit. Or even Homes of EQ Landscapes I love too.

Villains and Hero's sounds interesting. This interests me most in the moment. I would like to go with Winnowill but is she chosen than and can't be picked again?

I'm totally in for everything! I just like to ask can I get inspirations, ideas or talk over the ideas, character choices with others? Is is manageable in an extra threat, where only participants have access to? A chat where anyone could stat which character they only draw. There have been mentions about this issue in the last calendar threat IIRC? If someone only draws a certain character it's okay with me. I just like to know that I don't pic this one. Or just to keep on track if anyone has problems ending his/her project. To ask for help or just give up and let others know.
Don't know if that works because there will be a lot of spoilers...

Ooooh, so many great themes!
My current favorites are "Colors of Elfquest", "Landscapes of Elfquest" and "Villains and Heroes".

I really like the idea of drawing Elfquest in different comic styles, but I absolutely see problems with Copyrights there... still, we really should consider this for a site challenge!

And yes, Yavia, you are definitely a master of comedic arts! :love

I like all the ideas being tossed around but my original question was do you all want to submit ideas and vote as usual or should the theme be something that is discussed and decided by those who are participating?

Let me know if you have any thoughts on that as well.  ;)
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Yavia on March 10, 2020, 04:29:19 PM
It could be possible that not enough participants join if they don't know what the theme would be beforehand.
If we manage to gather 12 people (or how many we defiantly need) before we do have a theme there could also be the possibility that some of them don't like the decided theme and drop out.
If we leave it the way it was -discussion, vote- it can work fine because of the lesser time to finish or the exact opposite.

Difficult question...
I do think it's time for something new.

We could try to discuss the theme by those who like to participate.
Maybe we will find a better discussion if there are people who wants to draw and they come up with yes and no's till we find one theme that fits all..? In the tossed around ideas has been some agreements so far. In other words themes that are liked by more than one person are allready there.

I will try very hard to participate. Just wanna mention it.

I got completely sidetracked oops

I think having a discussion like above is good. It's easy to think that a topic will be great for everyone if it's not put to a discussion, and I rather like being able to narrow it down like that.
Looking back at some of the past polls, the 2019 has 7 options that got 1-2 votes and 50% of the themes in 2018 only got one vote each. Maybe it could be put to a vote at the end, but only between the top 3 themes that we've discussed and find agreeable? That way people who participate in the calendar but maybe doesn't want to participate in the discussion can still have a bit of a say
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat

I probably shouldn't post here as I don't participate in the calendar, but I had an idea so thought i'd throw it out there.

How about having a different theme every month, then at the end of the year having a "best of EQ fanart" calendar?

I guess that would be a problem that the entries wouldn't be a surprise?
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Afke on March 11, 2020, 01:01:03 PM
I agree with Wildfire; too many themes put into a poll doesn't sound good and has often felt as a disappointment so far, but discussing more thoroughly first and then put a top 3 or even just the top 2 in sounds like everyone who wants to be involved gets more of a say.

Do we still want to keep it a secret from "the outside"? Could we make a secret forum here? Like the Sanctuary is? Because if we do we could discuss more detailed ideas (and characters), and it might help determine if everyone has enough ideas to work with a certain theme before the theme is definite.
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Czarine on March 11, 2020, 01:40:15 PM
I'd like it so that it's not a secret for the participants. At least, I feel it would help greatly with the creative process if you were able to discuss it with others and maybe share ideas. I also think that if someone ran into trouble (not enough time, art block, lack of ideas,...), they could get help easier too.
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Maggie on March 11, 2020, 02:52:30 PM
We can definitely make a section for participants (only) to discuss ideas further to the ones we're chatting about now. I was also thinking maybe we could have a participants only AnonDraw (if that is possible) to work sketches and ideas as well.

I do want to keep things secret as much as possible but feel that if the participants need somewhere to discuss etc. that should be provided.

Ok, chatting about ideas here and then making a poll with the top 2 or 3 themes makes sense. We'll go with that and then those who signup for the calendar can fine tune the theme together.

Having an Anondraw would be fabulous, that would help a ton I think, especially for the more abstract themes. Plus, getting feedback if you get stuck is always good.

Re: the themes, I thought I'd make a list of those that have been discussed already and add a few of the ones I thought was interesting from last years.

Long Friendships

Creatures of Elfquest

Movieposters

Cliffhangers

Personally I'm the most fond of Long Friendships, Creatures, Colors, Otherness, and Movieposters (which could be very cool, but it would deviate from the "canon only" setting [anyone remember the SoC ElfWest alternaverse? It was fantastic to see characters in Wild West getups!])

Okay I missed this whole tread (again no notification received by mail :( ) but I am willing to participate. I love the theme comedy (f.e. like the short jokes Wendy made but do we have enough ideas for that) and maybe someting about chiefs and their loved ones? Not only the Wolfriders chiefs but all Chiefs (Savah, Surge, Kahvi, Dart during New Blood, Olbar, Petalwing, Greymung, Nightrunner etc.), elves, preservers, trolls, humans and animals alike.
Movieposter is also a challenging idea :)

I think voting by poll is great and when the members who want participate really have issues with the choosen theme, we can talk about it. But there are as many different opinions as there are particpants so we need to start somewhere.

This Covid-19 quarentine is a perfect time to start (when this is over most of us want to go outside and don't want to sit in a room inside drawing) so please don't wait too long. :D

Yes, will there be a poll or something? This already is an impressive lot of possible topics.
On the other hand, I do not have spare time, no matter any crisis, there is no meeting with friends besides telecommunication solutions, but 120% workload at the job. Neat, isn't it? But in any way, the sooner something is chosen, the sooner people could start. (For my side I know I very likely wouldn't make it in short runs of 3 months to finish.)

I agree that it would be good to get things rolling! I know that I will have a few other art projects to finish this year as well, so I'd like to start working on this too. A poll could help narrow down the themes.

AnonDraw for calendar participants sounds like a great idea! But I hope that someone else than me sets it up (it's free), because I already share my ink between two AnonDraw boards, and a third one would take up more. But it's not difficult at all! You don't even have to register to make one (I think), though you get more ink that way. (Don't ask me how ink in AnonDraw works, it's a mystery to me too!)
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Maggie on April 07, 2020, 11:44:19 AM
I think what I would like to do is have the participants from the last calendar take a look at Wildfire's compiled list of themes and post your top two to the thread. I'll take those responses and use them for a poll that everyone can vote in.

Oh but please skip the movie posters theme/any other theme that would infringe on copyrights. This calendar, like all the others will be printed and I don't want to have any issues with that when the time comes.

Also, I'm happy to start up an AnonDraw page for calendar participants once we've settled on a theme and the official guidelines have been posted to the site.

What about instead of movie posters, we do comic front pages? Aka, we take our favorite storylines (like Forevergreen) or character developments (like Clearbrooks journey from being on the war path to forgiving Two-Edge) and run with it?

Do you mean to put Clearbrooks journey in one Comic front page/cover? As if that was a single serie and what would a cover look like?

My top two
Villains and Hero's
Seasons

As both are not named so far it dosen't matter If they are not voted. I'm totally in for everything else!

What will AnonDraw be used for? Do I have to draw my entry in there - If so, I'm out.

@Yavia - No, AnonDraw will be set up for those who need some assistance/critique. It's just a way for those people participating in the calendar to view each other's work without anyone else seeing it. For suggestions and guidance not to make a finished piece of artwork. You/everyone participating will work on your actual submission as you always have done, not in AnonDraw. ;)

I am in again for sketches/line art.  Sorry I am late to the party.

Seasons - Lesser known characters - Friendships; all combined would work.

And we could do a splash page (the first page in the story that sets up the scene - usually a whole page.) if a similar layout was being suggested for continuity.

Top Two:

Characters-     Villains and Hero's   and   Lesser known characters

Themes-          Long friendships  and  (Seasonal is tied with Cliffhangers) cannot decide. . .

Format-           Splash page and Cover page
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Yavia on April 22, 2020, 01:48:12 AM
Is format a thing now?
I have to admit I do have problems get get my head around that. What does that mean? The theme long friendship (for example) put in a storyline (???) and only draw the first page of it? Or draw only the cover? Have there to be speech bubbles and a framing around it?

Wendy often begins her Comics with a whole page - but we will draw also one page - I can imagine every entry from last calendar's as a Frontpage or first page. So, what is the difference?
It will be a upright format (portrait) that will be a difference.
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Maggie on April 22, 2020, 09:25:04 AM
@Yavia, the calendar format will be as it is always...landscape-oriented. We've already done a comic style calendar in 2013 (Every Picture Tells a Story) but that was when I was able to get a calendar that was portrait-oriented. That is not an option so a comic book style format wouldn't be great for a future calendar.  Plus we've already done it, so doing it again probably won't happen.

Please don't get stressed, the calendar will have the same core group of rules/instructions as it has always had. There will just be a few new elements (like AnonDraw and a dedicated section on the boards for participants).  ;)

I absolutely love the idea of Lesser-known Characters but I could settle for Longtime Friends.

Just really excited to get started on something soon.

Hope to make some new friends!

Hello and welcome, Heidi.
I won't spoil anything but currently one choice seems to be running away. But we'll see in the end.

Most topics seem okay to me, though I would have ideas for one which sadly currently isn't in top position.
But I wonder if I'll have the time at all to participate, workload at the job is high and there's zero downtime due to a certain virus. (On the other hand I might be happy to still have a job that fairly fits my qualifications.) Well, time will show. But good to see more people around here in general.

Happy to have someone new wanting to participate in the fan calendar.  ;D The guidelines will go up sometime next week, the poll ended today and Lesser Knows is the top pick. Lesser-Known Characters has won the poll so that will be our 2021 theme. I think we should discuss what's meant by lesser-known. I was thinking a combo of unseen/lesser-seen characters from the comics including ones that maybe haven't been given any or much love in the calendars over the past several years.

Obviously characters like Cutter, Skywise, Leetah, Rayek, and the popular couples Redlance/Nightwood and Strongbow/Moonshade wouldn't be eligible. They're quite well-represented fan art-wise as I'm sure you all know. I would also like to represent all the tribes this year (if possible).

So let's have a bit of a back and forth about this topic so I can include any pertinent information in the rules and guidelines.

Lastly Kimo is taken, so no need to discuss him at all.  ;D

Kimo is overrepresented. :p ;)

I guess most characters where people have names present at their tongue could be ruled out then.

What means "unseen" characters? That would be either an entirely fictional char. or the very very rare occurence of a character that is only talked about (yet) but not seen. Like the grand-grandchildren of some tribe or aaaaancient ancestors.

Lesser-seen would be easier since we probably could spot some elf/human/troll/preserver/wolf/whatever that occurs in only one or two panels and maybe doesn't even have a name. At least two elven characters would already be on my mind, one from original quest and one from FQ.

Lesser-Known is a great choice! It allows for a lot of creativity and mixing with the other themes.

The "what is a lesser-known character" is more tricky of course.
Background unnamed Sunvillagers and Go-Backs seem a given, but would someone like Vaya be too well-known? She's named and had lines, but was only part of the comic for idk one issue. Same with Ahdri, more prominent than someone like Minyah, Rayek's parents or Yurek, but far less so than Leetah or Savah.
The old Wolfrider chiefs (and a lot of their tribemates) are named and have personalities, but are still pretty obscure imo, except for Bearclaw. Same with most of the Gliders and Go-Backs

Would including well-known characters in combination with lesser-known characters be allright? Fx. lot's of people know Treestump and Dewshine of course, but Rillfisher is fairly obscure, so would an illustration of Rillfisher with one or both of them fly?
I'm not sure how one would ensure that 1) the illustration doesn't become primarily about the well-known characters and 2) that the lesser-known character will be recognizable enough on their own.
If artists are required to submit a description with character names the 2) might be a non-issue

Hello Heidi!
a very warm welcome from me! I'm always happy to make new friends!

Lesser known character
Huff, the theme I don't know how to forfill at all.  ???
I'm currently drawing on Villains and Heroes - maybe it fits here as well? If Kimo is allowed?

As I has mentioned before, some of that lesser known characters get a bigger space later on. As Ahdri for example. Vaya who died off course not, or Rillfisher, or Brownberry.
Choose who was not often in the calendar sounds like a interesting idea. That could not be Ahdri for she has entry's there. Or choose of less made Fanart? That could be Ahdri for there is not much art off her.
If there is only one panel ever drawn of that character it might be difficult to recognize them and to add a better known character would be okay for me.

So I do have no clue how to decide and will surely need help in picking a character in that.

First, welcome Heidi, nice to get a new tribemember over here.

Lesser known characters it is.
Hmm I think the definition will be difficult but I think named characters like Vok, Murda, Zey, Yurek (Savah's lifemate and great-, great-, great- greatgrandfather of Ahdri), Minyah, Vuurdah, Marleen, Thiro, Serrin, Bowki, the Rootless Ones, most Wavedancers, Harotim and other new High Ones, most preservers, most Trolls, most Wolves, chiefs and tribemates before Bearclaw etc. are no problem. In my opinion characters like Rillfisher, Bethia, Woodlock's family (but not Mender), Vaya, are also okay by me because their role was small in all the storylines.
The Rebels? They are maincharacters in that storyline but in the greater good of ElfQuest they are very small and lesser known (especially compared to Jink).

To solve the problem of main charaters combined with lesser known characters, maybe we can solve that by placing the maincharacters in their younger years. F.e. Thiro with a very young Leetah (f.e. in the background) in a scene that makes clear what there role/interaction is.

Hope my opinion helps settle the guidelines.;)

Thank you for the warm greetings! I'm super excited about the theme. Since responding to the "Which character do you most identify with" post of FB, I'm dying to do a Rainsong image. I find her highly overlooked and since I've got a new baby, I'm feeling the motherly vibes.

Can't wait to start drawing!
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Maggie on May 04, 2020, 11:06:42 AM
I'm thinking of leaning toward characters that we haven't overused in previous calendars as a jumping-off point (planners not included, since everyone was used in those). I also think we could consider popularity in general and try to avoid those characters which get a lot of fan art attention.

Obviously each tribe has its leading characters and then its supporting cast. I'd like to focus on the supporting cast. For example, with the Sun Villagers I would say Leetah and Rayek are lead characters whereas Shenshen, Leetah's parents, and various other villagers are not. The Wolfriders, I would say that most of the characters from OQ are leads but there are some secondary players like Dewshine, Scouter, Rainsong, Woodlock, Wing, Newstar, and Pike. I know that some of these lesser characters get more attention in FQ but they still aren't as popular as the characters that have been the main focus of the story since the beginning. I don't think we have to go so far as to use nameless background characters just the ones that don't get as much attention as the rest.  ;D

It would probably be alright to use well-knowns in conjunction with our lesser-knowns but it would be the participant's job to make sure that the star of the submission was the lesser-known character. Kind of like Czarine's submission for the 2020 calendar. She had quite a few characters in her image but you could tell who the focus was on. Something like that would be fine but the focus has to be clear.

Maybe we can start compiling a list of each tribe's secondary players and see if we can agree on whether or not they're 2021 calendar material.

I like the idea of considering popularity more than actual "screentime", someone like Vaya (while I'd love to draw her) does tend to get a fair bit of attention and might not fit the "lesser-known" qualifier.

Also, I have no idea how useful this is, but I made a Google Sheet with a bunch of characters semi-sorted by tribe/family relations/species. It's by no means exhaustive, there's so many characters  ::) A bunch of them have profiles on the official Elfquest site, but not all.
I've marked some of them with red (too well-known in my opinion) or yellow (might be too well-known), feel free to add characters, write notes or mark red/yellow as y'all like.

(There's some Final Quest names in there, just fyi for the folks who haven't read it) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oNf0k5yzkN_aQI5Wxqyer4wWoY8M3cuRhqhkm4WT3GA/edit?usp=sharing (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oNf0k5yzkN_aQI5Wxqyer4wWoY8M3cuRhqhkm4WT3GA/edit?usp=sharing)

Lesser known characters sounds great to me, and I have ideas already.  In fact, some of the ones I'm considering were never given a name (as far as I know).  When you're ready, Maggie, I can send my ideas/choices and get started.  Things on my end will be getting messy in a very few short months, so the sooner I can get started, the greater the chance is I can participate.

And Ayoooooooah and Welcome, Heidi!

@Amberfox Working on getting the guidelines up as well as the secret thread for participants and the AnonDraw for participants. It shouldn't take longer than a week (max). Plus the timelimit for submissions will be a lot less than usual, so you should probably be able to get something going/finished before your time gets taken up by other things.  :)

Hmm, at first I was not thrilled with this idea as I always tend to go for characters that are lesser known in the first place? I prefer themes. I think I am starting to get some idea of what I want to paint/draw though?

Will we make a list of characters that are taken this year? I know some of y'all are going on anondraw and know what others are doing, but I use traditional art so that would be hard for me personally.
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Maggie on May 06, 2020, 12:02:35 PM
@Startear I'm going to make a secret thread for calendar participants only. There we can chat about which characters we want to use etc. so we can do our best to keep the calendar varied but also get to work with the characters we'd prefer.  ;)
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Afke on May 11, 2020, 10:41:44 AM
I'm the same as Startear, I don't think I ever went with the obvious characters either. I think I'll have to give myself some extra rules with this as well, like not using a character I've drawn before, even when it would technically count in this theme.
I don't want to go as far as unnamed either though. There's tons of characters that deserve some extra attention. I already have one character in mind that I was thinking about for another theme, that I think will fit this one as well!

I was wondering how everything went with the new calendar. I don't see the threat we had before or I am mistaken and this was the only one. In that case nobody said anything since May :S
Are there any updates?
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat

I thought there was a "hidden thread" supposed to be for the official participants.
The topic is interesting, but I was uncertain if I could join, nah, better to say I was certain I'd be very stressed this year due to my job. And yes...
But maybe otheres are just working silently and possibly exchanging in the hidden thread that was iirc meant to discuss character choices, overlaps and what makes a rare character.

It is as jaRf said; we have a hidden thread for the participants, where we discuss our calendar entries. It has been great to have the opportunity to ask for opinions on composition etc!

The deadline has been moved to the end of this month, so people are still working. I finished my entry already.  8)

@AceQuester - There won't be anything news wise with regards to the calendar until December. I'll try and release the printed version sooner so people can have it before January starts but it isn't officially live until December 31st/January 1st...as always.  ;D

Hi Maggie,

I have read your message but I was wondering if there was news already. Is there a pre-order option? :D I would like to order as soon as possible because it always takes a while before I receive the package (like f.e. now I am already waiting for 5 weeks for an E.Q.order from Redbubble and still haven't received anything) and because of COVID , the lockdown, Christmas etc. mail takes even longer. At this rate, the year is half over by the time I receive the calendar ;) :-\ :ohno

BTW great news that everyone pitched in again and thanks to Maggie for the hard work :D:D

Hello!

No AceQuester, I'm sorry.

The calendar will most likely be late this year, as I haven't heard back from Mr. Pini about the printed version or judging the submissions and deciding who makes it into the calendar this year. The pandemic will likely affect things as well, which I have no control over. I know that some of the options on the Zazzle site with regards to the calendar aren't available at this time, so this year's printed version (if there is one) will most likely be more of a keepsake and less of a useful item.

No, the calendar (both the site version and printed) is behind schedule. There are more than 12 entries which means judging but the judge is busy and hasn't gotten back to me yet. We'll all just have to be patient for now.

Hi Maggie,

I understand that there is some delay for this year calendar but because it's already the end of January, is there something we could do for the person who's drawing has been choosen for this month (if it's already decided)? His/her work doesn't get the spotlight it deserves after the hard work. Maybe the month January can be uploaded?

And let me be clear (sometimes a bit of subtlety is lost in the translation) that I mean well to the participants. I don't blame anyone for the delay. It's just a waste of hard work and hope we can do something about it :) Hope I have been able to express myself properly.
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Maggie on January 27, 2021, 04:50:29 AM
There is judging this time because there are more than 12 submissions, so no I can't upload anything until the judges decide which of the artwork makes it into the calendar. Plus it makes no difference when it all gets uploaded. It isn't like the artwork for January drops off the gallery once February arrives.  ;)

I'm sorry there is a delay but it is what it is, the calendar will go up once it has been judged. It isn't as easy as it is most years to get this part of the process completed, people have a lot going on and a lot more important things to worry about with COVID looming.
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Startear on January 28, 2021, 06:17:32 AM
Absolutely. I think we are all just fustrated because a lot of things are on hold right now and wish to oooh and ah at the artwork to distract ourselves. At least here in Norway, as we got the UK mutation of the virus within our borders and are in our second lockdown. Yet it won't come faster than the judges can. We just have to be patient.

Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Maggie on March 27, 2021, 05:35:58 PM
Ok!

So, I absolutely have to post the 2021 calendar to Zazzle before the end of the month, or the money raised so far gets taken little by little (if I understand correctly). It's not my money so I don't want that to happen. I realize that most of you may not want a printed version this year, which I understand so please don't feel an obligation. I'm doing it because it's required to keep my Zazzle account active.

I'm sorry it's taken so long to go live with the calendar. There have been a few hurdles, to say the least, the last being me, or my computer deciding to accidentally delete/corrupt my final version of the cover. This seems to be an ongoing thing for me and has happened more than once, even though I try to do regular backups. I'm almost finished getting it back to a finished state (from an older version of the file), so keep your eyes peeled between now and the end of the month for the 2021 EQFA calendar.

I will also put up the poll (at that time) so we can vote for the 2022 calendar theme, I just figured it was kind of pointless until the current calendar went live (in case anyone decided they didn't want to continue to participate).

I hope all is well with all of you.  :love

Ah, somebody is talking about computer problems. Me is awake! :)

So good to hear it's still happening, even though a paper calendar isn't really doing it for me at the end of March.
On the other hand: Looking at it not as a calendar but rather an arts object, things are different. So I could simply consider it as a couple of art prints for my EQ collection.

Backups are always a good idea, indeed. And sometimes, once you put a lot of work into something, it is good to put a copy at least of that very file somewhere else.
(I had my share of losses throughout time, dating back to the i486 days. Software error, hardware failures, or even my own stupidity.)

What strikes me is this "happened to me more than once". If it was on the same machine this might be a hint of a systematic error. Multiple reasons are possible, but worth to be checked, so you can decrease the number of events in the future. But I'd need more input on that matter to be of help.
Title: Re: 2021 Fan Art Calendar - Theme Chit Chat
Post by: Maggie on March 28, 2021, 10:36:29 AM
@jaRf - Like I said, no obligation to buy the calendar. I always consider it as less of a useful object and more of a keepsake, since you basically look at the cover and then open the thing up to use and don't see the cover again until you take it down to replace it with the next year's calendar. I like having them though, which is why I buy one. But for those who actually use them, I can see why you wouldn't want to bother this year.

As for my computer, no not the same machine. I just seem to have issues when the calendar comes around. Either with a computer, the site or something else. The year we did the planners my computer completely died and I had to have someone retrieve the files for me. It's just that added little bonus that makes the calendar even more fun...haha.  ;D
