I used this scene from book nr 4, where Cutter's mom is killed and Cutter and his dad are off to kill the creature madcoil, as reference and added a little to it. (Wendy's art is awesome and my main inspiration when I was younger 
). Here Bearclaw hears madcoil calling him and goes off to fight the beast by himself, taking one last look at his son. It's like he knew he was going to die.
