Very engaging; that expression just makes me want to check whatever it is out with him. Really effective expression. The background is fine. It's very simple, and in this case, why shouldn't it be? The focus is on Ram and whatever it is he's looking at. Adding a background adds to the overall image, and I'm not sure if I would bother to do one myself. I don't feel I manage backgrounds well, either, and they take me so much more time to do than any other aspect.
