Art and Elfquest / Calendar Theme Discussion 2013
« on: May 09, 2012, 05:56:35 PM »
Editing this first post for those who are just joining us for the voting!  See below for more detailed descriptions of the theme choices

Its that time of year again!  Even though I have officially retired from running the Calendar Contest, Maggie asked if I would do the honors and start off the theme discussion for the 2013 calendar.  I think what has been decided is that even though we have a weekly planner calendar all the way until the end of 2014, those here are still interested in a 12 month calendar to go along with it.

So let's get talking about a theme!

To get you started thinking about themes, here are the past ones:

Past Themes:
2012 Pinups
2011 Hidden Moments
2010 Finding One's Place
2009 The Magic of Elfquest
2008 Favorite Moments
2007 Home and Family
2006 Elf Art Through the Ages (Art History with an Elfin twist)
2005 Beloved Dead
2004 Then and Now
2003 Celebrations
2002 no theme

Themes on the current ballot:

Contrasts: Day & Night, Young & Old, Good & Evil, Warriors & Healers, Starsong & Wolfsong - the Elfquest saga offers many studies in contrasts.

Elfquest Goes to the Movies:  Very much like Elfquest through the Ages, except our favorite elves do Hollywood; iconic movie characters and/or movie posters or scenes.  (This would be an awesome theme to have if and when an EQ movie comes out)

Every Picture Tells a Story
Elfquest is a comic - comics mean telling a story with art (maybe words, too) in panels.  Why haven't we done that for a calendar!?    :o So.... each entry would be a single image made up of at least three, but probably no more than six panels.  They can be arranged anyway you like but the total image must conform to the usual calendar size (or whatever size is chosen).  The story: any theme you like because the theme is telling a story!  What kind of story - well, it doesn't have to be (and probably shouldn't be) too complicated.  Just a little interaction between characters: something funny or sweet or violent or action-packed.

Otherness, inter-species relations:  When the High Ones crashed on the WOTM, they were forced to relate to other species in a way they never dreamt of before.  Humans, Trolls, Preservers, Bond Beasts, the Neverending.  Throughout their history, the relationships have ranged from enemies, hunter/prey, to god/worshipper, to friend, and many in between.

Teachers and Leaders: A tribute to those who provide(d) guidance.

Art and Elfquest / 2012 Fan Calendar Guidelines
« on: July 11, 2011, 11:27:43 PM »
2012 will be the 10th anniversary of the EQ Fan Art Calendar!  In honor of this landmark achievement, we who organize the calendar decided to shake things up and do something a bit fun and different.  So even if you are a calendar "regular," read through these Guidelines, because things are not the same this year!

2012 Fan Art Calendar Guidelines

The theme for the 2012 Elfquest Fan Art Calendar is:  Pin-ups

Submissions for the 2012 Calendar Contest are being accepted:
July 15th through November 30th, 2011

This turned into a three year project.  We are coming into the finish line, though, and the last entries for 2014 must be in by the weekend of Feb 4/5, 2012.

THEME

This will be a continuation of the Pin-up Calendar that Wendy did in 1998, only drawing from the vast cast of characters that Wendy didn't use.  But we are not going to stop there…oh, no.  This is going to be a weekly planner calendar.  You heard right, 53 images are needed from you artists!

Entries should reflect the Pin-ups idea from Wendy's original calendar.  Each image should consist of one character shown three times.  Approximately 1/2 the image should be a sexy, scantily clad, full-length view of the character.  Approximately 1/4 should be a large portrait (also often sexy), and the last 1/4 or so should be an "action" pose of the character in their usual costume.

Unlike Wendy's Pin-ups, your entries don't all have to have exactly the same composition.  The full-length sexy pose may be either vertical (as Wendy did) or horizontal (reclining) or even diagonal (if you can get that to work).  The portrait and action pose may be either top or bottom or on the right or left side.

In order to give the calendar a unified feel, we ask that you have white margins on the art, as Wendy did.  Some background and/or graphics elements are allowed, but keep them in the spirit of the original

If you haven't seen the original, Richard has posted it here:
http://www.elfquest.com/social/index.php?do=/EQArtGallery/photo/elfquest-1998-calendar/

CONTENT

Because we are asking artists to contribute so much art this year, we are easing up on the usual rule that your art must be created specifically for the calendar and not ever posted before.  If you have a previously-seen sketch that would work as an element in your Pin-up, please feel free to re-use it.  However, it must be your previously-seen sketch.

Entries must not be available for the general public to view online until the okay is given for general sharing.

Canon Elfquest characters (of any race) only. No what-if characters (i.e., Worldpool).  Because this is a Pin-up calendar, only adult characters, please.  PG-13 or under.

You must be assigned your characters! See the post under this one for information on submitting your list of character choices and being assigned characters from it.

FORMAT

All entries should be in full color.
Size: 8.5" x 8.5" (pictures must be a square)
Resolution: 2550 x 2550 pixels (8.5" x 8.5" at 300dpi)
File format: JPEG format only

HOW TO SUBMIT

Because of the sheer amount of art needed for this calendar, it is unlikely that it will actually be a contest that will need judging (so, it is likely that everyone is in!)  However, the calendar entries will be viewed by the formatting team at Elfquest Fan Art http://www.elfquestfanart.net and displayed there once the calendar is published. However, due to size constraints at the site, you will still have to email your full-sized entry to Windrider. Please PM Windrider at either the EQ Social Network or at EQ Fan Art when you have an entry ready to be submitted.  Note: My email where you will send your entries also appears on my profile here.

Artists may submit an unlimited number of entries!  However, you only get three characters to start with.  Once you have submitted those, you may choose more from the "unclaimed" list below.

Entries must be received by midnight PST, November 30th, 2011.

Include the following:
  • Title (Required):  Title of your submission (character's name)
  • Artist Credits (Required):  Will be included on the calendar.  Your real name or preferred artist's credit name.
  • Preferred Week (Optional):  What week you would like your entry to be featured on (no guarantees, though).
  • Email (Required)
*
*
CREDIT
The artist credit and the email listed with your entry will used for credits.
The Warp Graphics, Inc. copyright will be included for you.

PUBLISHING
The finished calendar will be available for download at elfquest.com and at elfquestfanart.net. In addition, we will try to figure out some way to have this published as a real weekly planner - won't be at CafePress, though, since they don't have that option.

QUESTIONS
Any questions about the calendar may be asked and answered on this thread or PM Windrider.

Chit-Chat / Favorite Blogs

If you haven't visited "Hyperbole and a Half" you are really missing out on some fun.  It is part blog, part web comic.  In any case it is a riot.  The art is (intentionally) primitive, but very expressive in spite of (or because of) that.  Her latest post, "Wolves," reminded me of EQ a little (and all you EQ fans who do role playing), so I thought I'd share here - though I certainly hope you all didn't have the twisted childhood Allie seems to have had!  Check out her "Best Of" selections, too, and don't say I didn't warn you about snorting your drink out of your nose!

Feel free to post links to other blogs you like reading.

The Other Art Gallery / Carol's Non-EQ Gallery
« on: October 06, 2010, 02:50:02 PM »
Since I teased you guys by showing some of my non-EQ art on the watercolor thread and some of you said you'd like to see more, I thought I'd start a non-EQ gallery here.  Most of my published art is copyrighted by the publishers, so I thought I'd start out with some of my student art, specifically my senior student project, "Dream Waters."  These paintings may be old and flawed, but I still like some of them a great deal - I will only be posting those.

Some background:

This project was a turning point for me artistically.  In these images for the first time I turned my back on the absolute realism of my science illustration background and was intentionally going for something NOT realistic, both in the theme and how they were painted.  This led to the style of art I use for children's books and for EQ, which is rather different from my science stuff.  All of these paintings are watercolor and gouache on cold press illustration board.  There were 16 paintings of about 18 x 30 inches (HUGE for me) and a number of smaller paintings half that size.

The disjointed, Jungian, wordless story of "Dream Waters" is based on the writings of mythologist Joseph Campbell, in particular "The Hero's Journey."  I kept a dream diary and plugged my dreams into the different stages of his hero's journey format.  There were reoccuring elements: me (the hero), my dog (the hero's companion), the "other self" and his companion (the red horse), etc.  The boat became a character in its own right, which is funny since I often talk to my boats.     But it became a metaphor for creativity - the boat is a vessel which is empty at the beginning, but returns from its journey into the subconscious brimming with life.

Dream Waters

"Offerings of the Water"

"Trial one: The Labyrinth"

"Trial Three: The Wave"

"Descent I"

"Descent II"

"The Garden Beneath"

"At the Center"

"Encounter"

"Ascent I"

"Ascent II"

"Dream Waters"

Art and Elfquest / Vote! 2011 Calendar FORMAT
« on: June 01, 2010, 06:30:35 PM »
Aw, heck, I forgot we needed another poll to decide something else for the Calendar: the format!  I will just leave that blank on the Guidelines until we decide.  Two weeks to vote!

So, the trouble is that everyone is going to a widescreen monitor, so wallpapers are getting more difficult to format if submitted art is 11 x 8.5 inches (3300 x 2550 pixels).  But Cafe Press also has an oversized calendar format at 17" x 11" - what would that be in pixels (something huge, someone help me) x 3300?  Can everyone handle that?

So here are the options.  I can make almost anything work with the printable calendar, so that isn't a problem.

11" x 8.5" or 3300 x 2550 pixels - this is the standard sized calendar at Cafe Press (will need extreme cropping top and bottom to make widescreen wallpapers - or creative additions on the sides)

17" x 11" or (----) x 3300 pixels - this is the oversized calendar at Cafe Press (will need only tiny cropping top and bottom for widescreen wallpapers, but will need cropping on the sides for standard wallpapers and standard CafePress calendar)

Proportions for a widescreen wallpaper, 1920 x 1200 pixels is what mine is at, but would probably have to work at 5334 x 3334 pixels for a high enough res for Cafe Press.  (will need to crop off a tiny bit of sides for CafePress oversized calendar, and a huge amount off the sides for standard calendars and wallpapers)

Art and Elfquest / Vote! 2011 Fan Calendar Theme
« on: May 05, 2010, 10:12:32 PM »
Okay, voting is open!  The poll closes on June 1st, when the theme will be announced and the new Guidelines are posted.

Here are the potential themes described in more detail:

Contrasts: Day & Night, Young & Old, Good & Evil, Warriors & Healers, Starsong & Wolfsong - the Elfquest saga offers many studies in contrasts.

Teachers and Leaders: A tribute to those who provide(d) guidance.

Firsts and Lasts: Births and deaths, new ideas and discoveries, goodbyes and hellos, destruction and creation - there is much drama to be found in Beginnings and Endings.

Courage: Courage expresses itself in many ways, from flashy heroics to quiet acts of selflessness. At one time or another, almost every EQ character has had to reach deep inside tap into that well.

Rogues and Wildcards, shaking up the status quo:  Here's to the characters who drive the plot of any story, those whose actions stir things up.  Their motives may be purely evil or ambiguous, somewhat misguided, just plain selfish, downright crazy, or disturbingly visionary.  Either way, these are characters who refuse to be ignored.

Choices:  What would Elfquest be without characters making choices?  It drives the entire story!  Here is a chance to explore choices and choices taken away; choices for good and for ill, choices for change and for holding on to the past - all the many choices that shape the characters and their story.

Hidden Moments:  There are many moments in the Elfquest story that we know happened, yet were never shown - sometimes a character says something about their history, other times it is only implied - but in any case there is a great deal of "untold story" to explore.  (Note: this is not a "what if," it has to be canon-compatible).

Art and Elfquest / Calendar Theme Discussion 2011
« on: April 19, 2010, 07:22:33 PM »
Anyone interested in discussing possible themes for 2011?  I usually announce the theme and post the new Guidelines May 1st, but with the calendar posting at elfquest.com less than satisfactory I've not been too keen on getting all you folks to do this fabulous artwork that is then buried and un-findable.  But Foxeye thinks we can have our own wonderful calendar pages here - so I think we should get thing started.

In keeping with tradition, the potential themes for the FanArt Calendar should have broad fan appeal and be canon compatible.

Past Themes:
Celebrations
Then and Now
Beloved Dead
Elfquest Through the Ages (Elf-ified art history)
Home and Family
Favorite Moments
The Magic of Elfquest
Finding One's Place

Suggested Themes that have not been used (so far):

Contrasts: Day & Night, Young & Old, Good & Evil, Warriors & Healers - the Elfquest saga offers many studies in contrasts.

Teachers and Leaders: A tribute to those who provide(d) guidance.

Comedy: The EQ characters at play, practical jokes the characters could have played on each other, visual gags, etc.

At one time or another, almost every EQ character has had to reach deep inside tap into that well

Elfquest Goes to the Movies:  Very much like Elfquest through the Ages, except our favorite elves do Hollywood.  (This would be an awesome theme to have if and when an EQ movie comes out)

Feel free to suggest other broad-appeal themes that you feel should go up for a vote!

Poetry Submissions for the 2010 Fan Art Calendar

Poetry is organized by the month for which it was written - check the 2010 Calendar Gallery to view the art for which the poetry was written.  The poems that appear in the final calendar are in blue.

January
Goes with Rosalie's picture of Kahvi

Poem by Jeb

The fight was over, the palace won
Still in my heart was the battle begun
Something was needed, something was gone
Without something to fight for, I couldn't hold on

My chiefdom challenged, I must win
But the truth that was needed was hidden within
Could the answer be lying in where I began?
Will peace be the prize now I know who I am?

Poem by Mirr

a quest for pride
chieftess, mother, warrior
dreamer and survivor
always along for the ride

February
Goes with Afke's picture of Nonna

"Nonna Remembers"
by Kristen “Wordgazer” Rosser

Outcast in the forest,
We were childless and alone.
One night, beyond the firelight
I heard a quiet groan.
Then you staggered from the darkness
To fall down like a stone.

Your wolf leaped out to kill us--
But I knew what we must do.
Your people had been good to me,
So I was good to you.

See now! Our tribe-- our children!
How our happiness has grown!
And it was you, my honored one,
Who opened our way home.

March
Goes with Valkerie's picture of Rahnee

Poem by Manga

She-Wolf has no name, no sense of self -
Or not, at least, one like her mother, an elf.

Timmorn the Yellow-Eyed, father and chief,
Has tapped her as heir and left like a thief.
She, the Omega, content simply to follow,
Now struggles to lead with a self that is hollow.

For others to follow one must be willing to lead
And She-Wolf is far too ready to concede.
There are others who feel as chief they’d do better
While She-Wolf feels chief-ship tight as a fetter.

There is strife in the pack and no one feels settled;
Hackles stay raised and feelings stay nettled.
What does she lack that will help her to lead?
Deep inside She-Wolf goes - and finds what she needs.

She-Wolf has a name and a sense of “me.”
I am Wolfsong. I am Starsong. I am Rahnee.

Poem by Leanan

I could call myself Stagslayer...
And it would say I slew a stag...
Is that my highest boast?

I could call myself Lonehunter...
And it would say I hunted alone...
Is that something to take pride in?

I could call myself Starcrossed...
And it would say many things...
But some of them might not be true.

Timmorn's Daughter they call me,
Spearbearer they name me,
Firstchosen I am,
but am I not more?

What is my name?
What is the secret inside me?
How come I need you to tell me?
Tell me...

April
Goes with Mournsong and Mirr's picture of Suntop, Ember, and Trinket

Poem by Jeb

What will I be when I am grown?
Leader of elves, a tribe of my own?
Holder of riches, on a golden throne?
Wielder of powers, finally shown?
What will I be when I am grown?

Poem by Tenderfoot

What will it be like to be all grown up?
Not to be treated like a half grown pup.

Will I be a princess with gold to no end?
Or a searcher or chieftess, surrounded by friends.

We can only wonder and listen to tales sung,
and wait for our time as we are still young.

May
Goes with Joyrider's picture of Redlance

Poem by Jeb

In the dark of the forest it slept inside
In the light of the sun it could not hide
Do I have the power in my hands
to make life grow in these dry sands?

Poem by Manga

My destiny had seemed delayed,
by fate or malice my gift waylaid.
Then through the sea of sand we marched -
I had never dreamed a land so parched! -
and in this land of bare rock and earth
my magic found its long-awaited birth.

Poem by Redhead Ember

Can you hear it?
The seed calls to you
Asks you to bring it
Into the light
This is your power
Your gift to the tribe

Poem by aurianfae

In concentration, deep meditation
He stares at barren, broken earth
Calling forth, encouraging new life
Striving to break the surface
Delicate little growing thing
Plant-shaper will care for you.

Poem by Tenderfoot

I always used to wonder,
what the others shared with trees.
Their deepest desires? Their secrets?
Or sweet, sweet melodies?

Now that I'm able to see its face,
I know I've finally found my place.

June
Goes with Foxeye's picture of Newstar and the Jackwolf rider

"A Happy Trade"
by Kristen “Wordgazer” Rosser

Weary of our fear and sorrow,
to this place of warmth we’ve come.
Peace today and quiet tomorrow
flow from the sand, the sky, the sun.
Folk of Sorrow’s End, we thank you
for what we’re free here to become!

Farming was all that we aspired to,
accepting what might come to be.
But when you came, we saw that action
could bring change-- our destiny
was in our own hands. Friends, we thank you!
Jackwolfriders now are we!

July
Goes with ElfTanner's picture of Dart

Poem by ElfTanner

Born of the Forest and wolf, raised by the sun and sand.
Was once a chief of Jackwolf riders, but now, I am where I belong.
I found my place amongst the Forest and Wolves.
At home, and at peace, with myself and my family.

August
Goes with Maya-Bell and Elea's picture of Nightfall

Poem by Tenderfoot

Mother, Father, I miss you so much!
I miss so greatly your loving touch.
It feels like I'm doing nothing but roam.
Is it true you're not coming home?

I feel so helpless, what shall I do?
There must be a place somewhere for me too.
But when will I get there? When will it be?
Will I ever get a new family?

September
Goes with Aurianfae's picture of Moonshade

"Moonshade's Sonng"
by Kristen “Wordgazer” Rosser

Whenever cubs are overbold,
“Go help Moonshade,” they are told.
To soak and scrape and pound a hide--
A trial the wayward must abide.

Yet this is work I do by choice--
I lead not, rarely raise my voice--
My hands they move, my fingers stitch,
My dyes I blend to colors rich.

Though being the tanner seems no prize,
At heart, on me the tribe relies.
Whenever perils must be run
My leathers bind us into one.

October
Goes with Bukittyan's picture of Scouter

"Watching" by ElfTanner

Sitting in the tree tops reveling in my duties
spying out stars, shadows and whatnots

Cub, the elders call me, young but needed few as we are.
I take my place looking near and far.

Watching over the tribe I spot a flash of yellow, golden
curls dancing amongst the star cousins in the meadow.

I watch her move like a breeze, my eyes are strong, she sees
me not in the shadows I sit alone.

Poem by Jeb

I am the eyes of my tribe
guarding their lives
where ever it is we may go
in a tree way up high
just me and the sky
while my true heart waits below

I am the eyes of my tribe
my sight is my pride
when I hear the call I'll be there
but when done at my post
the sight I love most
has blue eyes and sunny-gold hair

November
Goes with Sgaana's picture of Pike

Poem by Jeb

I've been watching, and I see that you're troubled
Come sit next to me, I've a story to tell
Of elves long ago, and yet so much like you
The struggles you face were their struggles too
There're here inside me, to help and to guide you
You'll never have to face it alone

Poem by Tenderfoot

Funny how it's the smallest things
that self-confidence to a lone elf, brings.

I had no talent, but look at me now.
Tribe's storyteller and master of plow.

And to think that even my little howl
could help a cub to once again prowl.

December
Goes with Firestorm's picture of Leetah

Poem by Jeb

“My children are of both forest and desert. So am I…now.”
Strange that these words come from me.
For so long I heard only the voice of the sun
the golden glow, the warmth on my skin
But in the quiet, the coolness of night
In the land of new green and white cold
I find the moon has a voice of its own

Art and Elfquest / 2010 Fan Calendar Guidelines

2010 Fan Art Calendar Guidelines

The theme for the 2010 Elfquest Fan Art Calendar is: Finding One's Place (Finding Where One Belongs)

Submissions for the 2010 Calendar Contest are being accepted May 1st through November 30th, 2009.

THEME
  • Submitted artwork should represent the theme "Finding One's Place" or "Finding Where One Belongs."
  • This is one of Elfquest's most enduring themes: the various tribes of elves trying to find a place where they fit in a hostile world their ancestors didn't mean to visit.
  • Then there are the individual elves making a place for themselves within their tribes (or even outside it).  Hunters and storytellers, healers and makers; in the world of Elfquest, everyone has a place where they fit in, a job or role they perform in daily life - a place where they are "in their element."

CONTENT
  • Entries must be original artwork created specifically for the calendar.  The use of photos or "borrowed" art for backgrounds is not allowed.
  • Entries must not be available for the general public to view online until the okay is given for general sharing.  Before then, any entries found online in any form (thumbnails, crops, etc.) will be disqualified and removed.
  • Canon Elfquest characters (of any race) only.  No what-if characters (i.e., Worldpool).
  • PG-13 or under.

FORMAT
  • All entries should be in full color.
  • Size: 11"x8.5" (pictures must be landscape oriented - wider than they are tall)
  • Resolution: 3300 x 2550 pixels (11" x 8.5" at 300dpi)
  • File format: JPEG format only.

HOW TO SUBMIT
  • Once again, we have a functional Elfquest Fan Art site!  (Yay, Foxeye!) Calendar entries will be viewed by the judging panel there and displayed there once the calendar is published.  However, due to size constraints at the site, you will still have to email your full-sized entry to Windrider.  Please PM Windrider when you have an entry ready to be submitted.
  • Include the following:
    • Title (Required):
